Task 3
When AI can make art – what does it mean for Annotation
creativity?
By Laurie Clarke
November 12, 2022

Recent improvements in AI have shifted the dial. Not

only can AI image generators now transpose written
phrases into novel pictures, but strides have been made
in AI speech-generation too: large language models such
as GPT-3 have reached a level of fluency that convinced at
least one recently fired Google researcher of machine
sentience. Plug in Bach’s oeuvre, and an AI can improvise
music in more or less the same style – with the caveat
that it would often be impossible for a human orchestra
to actually play.

This class of technology is known as generative AI, and it

works through a process known as diffusion. Essentially,
huge datasets are scraped together to train the AI, and
through a technical process the AI is able to devise new
content that resembles the training data but isn’t
identical. Once it has seen millions of pictures of dogs
tagged with the word “dog”, it is able to lay down pixels in
the shape of an entirely novel pup that resembles the
dataset closely enough that we would have no issue
labelling it a dog. It’s not perfect – AI image tools still
struggle with rendering hands that look human, body
proportions can be off, and they have a habit of producing
nonsense writing.

Cues/Questions/ Notes
Summaries
1. What activities have AI AI can now turn phrases into pictures, speak more fluently and
been allowed to do improvise music.
recently?
2. What class of technology Generative AI
has allowed this to
happen?
3. How does it work? Through diffusion:
- Datasets are gathered to train the AI
- Through the studying process, AI can create something that it
has learned through the process
4. Is it perfect? No, it still has difficulty in rendering images of human, and it
still writes something that doesn’t make any sense.
Summary:
Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have brought about significant changes.
Not only can AI generate new images from written phrases, but there have also been
improvements in AI speech generation. Generative AI technology, through a process called
diffusion, allows AI to create new content that resembles the training data. However, AI
image tools still face challenges in generating elements such as human-like hands, accurate
body proportions, and often produce nonsensical text.
