Chapter: 5: Matter as Particles
Topic: Evidence for the particles Model
T.B Page: 43-45

Q1: Explain why a balloon slowly deflates?

Ans: The air particles slowly diffuse through walls of the balloon due to the high pressure
inside the balloon and the small holes present on the surface of balloon. This is the
reason it slowly deflates.
Q2: Explain why a balloon deflates quickly when you stick a pin in it.

Ans: When the balloon is filled with air then the pressure of air is much
more than the atmospheric pressure outside. When it is pricked with a
pin it makes a hole in the balloon and the air from the balloon rushes
out.

Q3.What is diffusion?
Ans: The movement of particles from regions where there are many particles to regions
where there are fewer particles is called diffusion.
Q4. Suggest why diffusion does not happen in solids?
Ans. The particles in solids are compactly packed and they cannot show movement
that’s why diffusion does not happen in solids.
Q5: What are the three Physical states of matter?
Ans. There are the following three states of matter.
i- Solid
ii-Liquid
Iii-Gas
Q6: What can you say about?
a) The shape of solids?
Ans: Solids have well-defined shapes because their particles are tightly packed.
b) Shape of a gas?
Ans: Gases don’t have a well defined shape.
c) The Volume of a liquid?
Ans: The liquid has a specific volume which can be measured using a measuring
cylinder.
d) the volume of a Solid?
Ans:A solid has definite volume.
Q7: If natural gas is invisible, how can you tell when it is leaking?
Ans: The most telling sign of a natural gas line leak is the familiar rotten egg odor.
Since natural gas is itself odorless and invisible, this odor is deliberately created by a
chemical added to the natural gas so it can be detected in the event of a leak.
Q8: Name a substance that commonly exists as a solid, liquid and as a gas.
Ans. Water is a substance which commonly exists as solid( ice), liquid(water) and as a
gas(steam).
Q9: Explain why
a) solids do not flow
Ans: The particles in solids are compactly packed that’s why they are unable to flow.
b) gases compress easily.
Ans: There are large spaces between the particles of gases that’s why they can be
compressed easily.
