CHARACTERISTICS OF BITMAP IMAGES

The characteristics of bitmaps cannot really be understood without first of
all understanding the definition of the main topic “digital images”
Definition of some keywords in digital images
DIGITAL IMAGE
It is an image stored in binary form and divided into matrix of pixel. Each
pixel consists of a digital value of one or more bits.
DEFINITION OF PIXEL
It is the smallest and addressable element in a digital display image. Up to
millions of pixel makes up an image or video on a device’s screen.it compresses
a sub-pixel that emits a red, green and blue color which displays at different
intensities.
RESOLUTION
It is a measurement of number of pixels, picture elements or individual
points of color that can be contained on a display screen or in camera sensors
DEFINITION OF BITMAP IMAGES
Bitmap is an array of binary data representing the values of pixels in an
image or display. Some types of bitmaps include;
1. BMP (Bitmap Image) mainly used for limited file format
2. GIF (graphical interface format) mainly used for internet graphics.
3. TIFF ( tag image file format) it is the most popular bitmap format

CHARACTERISTICS OF BITMAP IMAGES

Bitmap map images are broadly characterized by two parameters that is;
 The number of pixels (resolution)

The number of pixels (pixel density) is often measured in PPI (pixel per
inch). For example, “millions of pixels could make up an image”

 The color depth per pixel.

This refers to the information contained within the image. For example “a
one bit image means a pixel could either be black or white”
Other characteristics are;
 Bitmap data can be saved in variety of five formats.
 A bitmap image can contain any number of colors.
 A bitmap image depends on the fixed number of pixels to represent the
image data.
 Bitmap images are best for representing subtle gradations of shades and
colors such as in photographs.
 It can display a picture realistically
 It eases the sharing and editing of images or pictures by people
 It doesn’t resize very well
 It has a large file size
 When compressed a lot it loses its quality

Conclusively bitmap images are almost indispensible in the digital world as

they serve a great purpose in editing images for personal or business use.
