A Day in the Life of a Marketing Intern at North Square Investments

As a marketing intern at North Square Investments, each day brings new learning
opportunities and challenges. North Square Investments, based in Chicago, is a boutique
financial services firm known for its tailored investment solutions and robust client engagement
strategies. With a workforce of 50-100 employees, North Square has maintained a dynamic and
collaborative environment, even in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in the
office from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, two days a week, allowing me to gain hands-on experience and
immerse myself in the company’s vibrant culture.
My day typically begins at 1:00 PM, when I arrive at the office. The first task on my
agenda is to dive into the analytics for the day. Using tools like Google Analytics, Salesforce,
and Pardot, I track the latest engagement metrics across various platforms, including our website,
LinkedIn, and email marketing campaigns. In the office, I have direct access to the resources and
support I need to analyze this data effectively. I typically check in with Mita Pandya, vice
president of technology, Sarah Van Dorpe, Vice President of Employee Relations and, Mark
Goodwin, CEO of North Square when they are in the office to chat about what I am working on.
I look at key performance indicators such as website traffic, bounce rates, and conversion rates to
understand which content resonates most with our audience and where we can improve. This
hands-on approach allows me to identify trends and gauge the effectiveness of our marketing
campaigns in real-time.I also participate in online learning sessions or webinars to further my
understanding of the financial industry and digital marketing trends when I have extra time.
North Square encourages continuous learning, and this commitment to professional development
has allowed me to expand my skill set beyond traditional marketing practices.
One of the highlights of my internship was sitting in on North Square's yearly sales
meeting. Held in our conference room, this event provided a comprehensive overview of the
company’s growth over the past five years. I learned about significant milestones we’ve
achieved, from expanding our client base to enhancing our investment strategies. It was
fascinating to see how our marketing efforts contribute to these broader goals and how data-
driven decisions have played a pivotal role in our success.
Despite the ongoing effects of the pandemic, North Square has managed to maintain a
lively office environment. This experience has highlighted the importance of flexibility and
resilience in adapting to changing circumstances. The company’s commitment to maintaining a
safe and productive workspace has been evident in its proactive approach to ensuring everyone's
well-being.
Reflecting on my internship experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from
such knowledgeable professionals and gain hands-on experience in the marketing field. Working
at North Square has exposed me to the intricacies of marketing within the financial sector, where
regulations and compliance requirements add an additional layer of complexity. I have become
proficient in using industry-standard tools like Salesforce, Pardot, and Google Analytics, which
are crucial for data-driven marketing. Sitting in on the yearly sales meeting provided me with
valuable insights into how the company has grown and the critical role that marketing plays in
that growth. The experience has also underscored the importance of adaptability, particularly in a
time when the workplace is rapidly evolving due to external factors like COVID-19. In
conclusion, my internship at North Square Investments has been an enriching experience that has
broadened my understanding of both marketing and the financial industry. I look forward to
applying these insights in my future career and continuing to grow as a marketing professional.
