3
BASICS OF
NETWORKING

4
WHAT IS COMPUTER NETWORKING?

Computer networking refers to interconnected computing devices

that can exchange data and share resources with each other. These
networked devices use a system of rules, called communications
protocols, to transmit information over physical or wireless
technologies.

Nodes and links are the basic building blocks in computer

networking. A network node may be data communication
equipment (DCE) such as a modem, hub or switch, or data terminal
equipment (DTE) such as two or more computers and printers. A
link refers to the transmission media connecting two nodes. Links
may be physical, like cable wires or optical fibers, or free space
used by wireless networks.

5
The foundations of Networking:
Switches, Routers, and Wireless
Access Points
Switches, routers, and wireless access points are the essential
networking basics. Through them, devices connected to your
network can communicate with one another and with other
networks, like the Internet. Switches, routers, and wireless
access points perform very different functions in a network.

Switches:
Switches are the foundation of most business networks. A
switch acts as a controller, connecting computers, printers,
and servers to a network in a building or a campus.

Switches allow devices on your network to communicate with

each other, as well as with other networks, creating a network
of shared resources. Through information sharing and
resource allocation, switches save money and increase
productivity.

6
Routers
Routers connect multiple networks together. They also connect
computers on those networks to the Internet. Routers enable
all networked computers to share a single Internet connection,
which saves money.

A router acts as a
dispatcher. It analyzes
data being sent across a
network, chooses the
best route for data to
travel, and sends it on its
way.

Routers connect your business to the world, protect

information from security threats, and can even decide which
computers receive priority over others.

WIRELESS ACCESS POINTS

An access point allows devices to connect to the wireless
network without cables. A wireless network makes it easy to
bring new devices online and provides flexible support to
mobile workers.

7
An access point acts like an amplifier for your network. While
a router provides the bandwidth, an access point extends that
bandwidth so that the network can support many devices, and
those devices can access the network from farther away.

But an access point does more than

simply extend Wi-Fi. It can also give
useful data about the devices on the
network, provide proactive security,
and serve many other practical
purposes.

8
TYPES OF CABLES IN NETWORKING:
Coaxial Cable:
Coaxial cables have a single copper
conductor at the center, while a plastic
layer provides insulation between the
center conductor and braided metal
shield. The metal shield blocks outside
interference from fluorescent lights,
motors, and other computers.

Fibre Optic Cable:

Fiber optic cables possess a center
glass core surrounded by multiple
layers of protective materials. They
avoid electrical obstruction by
transmitting light instead of
electronic signals, making them
perfect for environments with large
amounts of electrical interference.
Fiber optic cables have become the standard for connecting
networks across buildings because of their resistance to moisture
and lighting.

9
Twisted Pair Cables:
The twisted-pair cable was primarily
developed for computer networks. This cable is
also known as Ethernet cable. Almost all
modern LAN computer networks use this
cable.

This cable consists of color-coded pairs of

insulated copper wires. Every two wires are
twisted around each other to form a pair.
Usually, there are four pairs. Each pair has one
solid color and one stripped color wire. Solid colors are blue,
brown, green, and orange. In stripped color, the solid color is
mixed with the white color.

Based on how pairs are stripped in

the plastic sheath, there are two types
of twisted-pair cable; UTP and STP.

In the UTP (Unshielded twisted-pair)

cable, all pairs are wrapped in a
single plastic sheath.

In the STP (Shielded twisted-pair) cable, each pair is wrapped with

an additional metal shield, then all pairs are wrapped in a single
outer plastic sheath.

AIMS-
Airport
Information
Management
System

22
Introduction to AIMS:

The Airport Information Management System (AIMS) is a

comprehensive and indispensable system designed to efficiently manage
crucial airport operations. AIMS serves as a centralized platform for
recording essential information related to aircraft that land and take off,
ensuring accurate and up-to-date records are maintained. One of its key
functions includes the billing of airlines for services rendered,
encompassing landing charges and parking fees. The system generates
detailed reports, providing valuable insights into airport activities and
performance. AIMS plays a pivotal role in managing the airport's income
sources, which can be classified into two categories: traffic and
non-traffic. Traffic income sources comprise revenues generated from
passenger fees, cargo handling, and landing charges, while non-traffic
sources include rental income from airport facilities and advertising.
With its robust capabilities, AIMS streamlines airport operations,
enhances financial management, and contributes to the overall
efficiency and success of the airport.

23
Recordkeeping in AIMS:
The record-keeping aspect of the Airport Information
Management System (AIMS) is a feature that ensures the
meticulous tracking and organization of essential data
related to aircraft activities. Through AIMS, users can
access comprehensive information about all aircraft that
have landed, including their precise timings of arrival and
departure. The system also keeps a detailed record of the
parking duration for each aircraft, providing valuable
insights into parking utilization and availability. Another
vital piece of information captured by AIMS is the number
of paying passengers on board, enabling airlines and
airport authorities to assess passenger loads and manage
resources efficiently. With such comprehensive and
real-time data at their fingertips, users can make informed
decisions, optimize airport operations, and enhance the
overall passenger experience. AIMS' record-keeping
capabilities play a critical role in ensuring the smooth and
organized functioning of the airport, elevating it to greater
heights of efficiency and service quality.

24
Billing in AIMS:
AIMS, the Airport Information Management System, is a
sophisticated and invaluable platform designed to streamline
and automate various critical operations within an airport
environment. One of its standout features is its seamless
ability to send invoices to airlines and other stakeholders
efficiently. By integrating with billing and accounting modules,
AIMS automates the generation and delivery of invoices based
on various factors, such as landing charges, parking fees, and
passenger numbers. This automation significantly reduces
manual errors and administrative overhead, ensuring timely
and accurate billing for all services rendered. The system also
provides a comprehensive overview of pending invoices and
payment statuses, empowering airport authorities to manage
their revenue streams effectively.

Moreover, AIMS offers an interface that simplifies the invoice

generation process. Airport personnel can easily access and
review invoice details, make necessary adjustments if needed,
and promptly send them to the respective recipients. Through
secure electronic communication channels, AIMS ensures that
invoices reach the airlines promptly, expediting the payment
process and improving overall cash flow for both the airport
and airlines. This efficient invoicing system not only enhances
financial management but also fosters better relationships
between the airport and its clients, reinforcing its reputation
as a well-organized and customer-centric facility.

OUTLOOK
27
WHAT IS OUTLOOK?

Microsoft Outlook is a popular personal information

manager and email application developed by Microsoft. It
is part of the Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools
and is widely used for managing emails, calendars,
contacts, tasks, and notes.

One of the biggest advantages of using MS Outlook is that it

can serve the purpose of both, a stand-alone application
and also a multi-user software. It can be used by an
individual as an email client-server and also by an
Organisation which requires shared features like a
mailbox, calendar, appointments, etc.

28
WHY DOES AAI USE OUTLOOK?

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) uses

Microsoft Outlook for its email management
primarily because it provides a convenient storage
option, allowing them to store emails locally. This
choice is motivated by the limitation of the
company's email system, which offers only 2GB of
storage to each employee.

29
Given the nature of
AAI's operations
and the volume of
communication
that takes place
within the
organization, email
communication is a
crucial aspect of
their day-to-day
activities.
Employees regularly exchange important information,
documents, and updates via email, which can lead to a
significant amount of data being generated and received.

With the limited storage capacity offered by the company's email

system, employees might quickly reach their storage limits,
leading to issues like blocked emails, potential loss of critical
information, or the need to constantly delete old emails to free
up space. To overcome these challenges and ensure smooth
email management, AAI has opted to use Microsoft Outlook.

Outlook provides the advantage of local email storage, allowing

employees to save their emails directly on their computers or
devices. By doing so, they can efficiently manage their mailbox
size and maintain access to a vast archive of emails, even when
their company's email server reaches its storage limit. This local
storage option not only reduces the dependency on the limited
server storage but also enables employees to keep essential
emails for future reference and compliance purposes.

30
OST (Offline Storage Table)
OST is your offline file mode in MS outlook. Offline Storage
Files draft the user’s mailbox data for offline mode on the local
system. It does so by registering with Exchange Server taking
Microsoft Outlook in use.

It is automatically made during the first use of Microsoft

Outlook with server connectivity. Once the folder is composed,
the data get arranged with the mail server for offline
availability.

PST (Personal Storage Table)

In the computing language, PST or Personal Storage Table is an
exclusive file format created by Microsoft to save copies of
calendar events, messages and other components in their
software program like Windows messaging and Microsoft
Outlook.

The merit of PST is that they are easily portable and can be
moved from one Outlook user to another. While owning the
portability advantage, it also has a few security issues.

PST files are not designed to work as multi-gigabyte email

archives. Due to this, subsequent data loss and corruption can
be a recurring occurrence.
