Background of Complex Engineering Problem:
In order to enhance the in depth knowledge and innovative thinking of students, complex-
engineering problems are devised. It should not be a routine assignment and may require
knowledge of multiple disciplines. In any one subject a complex engineering problem requires in
depth literature review. In this context students of FM-II are assigned following:
Complex Engineering Problem:
You are assigned to design a turbine to develop 10,000 hp under the following data. Assume
suitable value of the rpm of turbine shaft for your case.

You are required to select a suitable type of turbine for the hydropower site having above
mentioned parameters and design main components of the turbine.
Relevant Material:
Fluid Mechanics II lectures, and Reference books.
Group:
Students have to submit the complex engineering problem solution in groups of 3-4 students
each as given in attachment.
Report:
Report should contain all calculations, input and outputs, diagrams, conclusions, and
recommendations.
Evaluation:
Solutions of the Complex Engineering Problems will be evaluated using the attached Rubric.
Weightage:
This assignment will be included in theory with a weightage of 10 marks (10%) of FM-II.
