PREPARATION
The following steps are critical to a successful job.
1. Refer to the chart #1 below and choose the correct jaw size to be used
2. Insert the correct size jaw into both arms of the SSC. Follow the instructions below
3. Determine the correct number of links needed on each chain to fit the pipe O.D that you
are working on. See chart #2. Add or remove links as described in the instructions
1. The jaws in the Scorpion arm slide into a tee slot and are secured
by a retaining bolt.
2. To change out a jaw set, #2. Remove the Hex nut #11 from the
Eye bolt #10. Remove the eye bolt and slide the jaw out
sideways.
3. Insert a new jaw set in the tee slot and secure with the eye bolt
and hex nut.

5 6 ½” to 8”
6 7 ½” to 10”
7 9” to 11”
8 10 ½” to 13”
9 13” to 15”
10 14 ½” to 16 ½”
NOTE:
Unit comes compete with seven (7) links per chain. To accommodate the required O.D., simply
add or remove links as indicated above.
If Cylinder Rod is extended too far – more than 2 inches, simply add a link to the chain to
prevent cylinder rod from bending.
1. Refer to chart # 2 on page 16 to select the correct number of links for the size tool you
are working on.
2. Put on safety glasses and gloves. Make sure that Scorpion is not connected to
any power source and that you are in a safe work area.
3. Remove the “end link” (3) by removing the snap ring (6). Then remove the pin (6). It
may be necessary to use a rubber mallet and round chisel to extract the pin bolt.
4. To remove a link, repeat step 3 above but this time removing a “standard” link (2).

5. To add a link, make sure you use the correct link and insert the smaller end into the
space at the end of the last link. Align the holes and insert a pin (6)
8. Check to ensure that all links are correctly oriented and that their tong dies are in place
and not damaged.
OPERATION
NOTE: * MAKE-UP AND BREAK-OUT ARE USED INTERCHANGEABLY WHEN REFERING TO THE TOP ARM.
Operational outline
2. The Make-Up arm is “Floated” and can swing in either direction as well as forward and
backward to allow easy alignment with the tool when it is clamped in place by the Back-
Up arm.
3. To achieve the best grip, the chain on each arm is tightened by using the chain cylinder.
The rod of the chain cylinder should be exposed no less than ½” and no more than
2” for optimal performance. If the rod is extended beyond 2”, an additional link should
be used on the chain. (see the chart on page 5 for correct sizing)
4. The pressure of the chain cylinders is independent of the pressure for the Make-Up
cylinder, thus ensuring a better grip on the tool. The pressure on the Make-Up cylinder
can be adjusted to achieve the desired torque.
5. Although the spacing between the Back-Up arm and the Make-Up arm can be adjusted
allowing for more flexibility in tool size and O.D., it is recommended for optimum
performance and higher torque that this spacing be kept as close as possible.
6. When using the Scorpion on tools smaller than the unit‟s capacity:
Replace the chain links and the jaw sizes with the “Reducer Package”.
The Reducer Package consists of a frame and a jaw set. See chart for sizes.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATION
1. Determine the correct number of links per chain required to run O.D. range. See the
chart provided. To add or remove links, follow the instructions on page 8 in this service
manual
2. For best results and proper operation, it is most important to maintain a secure grip on
the tool. To ensure the best grip:
Make sure that the correct number of links are used in each chain for the tool O.D that is
being worked on.Refer to the chart provided on page 5. Add or remove links if
necessary, when changing tool O.D.
Use the correct jaw size for the pipe O.D that is being worked on. See the chart on page
5 for sizing selection.
3. Wrap the Back-up arm‟s chain around the tool and tighten the chain cylinder. The
cylinder rod will need to be pulled in as much as possible leaving not less than one-
quarter inch (½”) exposed.
4. If after tightening the chain, the rod is extended more than 2”, an extra link will need to
be added. Visually inspect the contact between the tool to the jaw tong dies and the link
tong dies.
5. To hook up the Make-Up arm, first wrap the Make-Up arm‟s chain around the tool and
hook it up to the chain cylinder with the pin tee.
6. Slightly tighten the chain by the lever on the control valve, and then check the tool
position on the jaws again. Make sure it fits into the jaw‟s tong dies.
7. When the fit is correct, tighten the chain completely by using the control valve.
10. It is recommended to work the arms as close as possible to each other. Each
of the arms carries a replacement jaw and the correct jaw O.D. size is very important to
ensure proper use of the unit.
NOTE:
For optimum performance and reduced wear on machine and drill pipe, the correct jaw size
should always be used
INSTRUCTIONS FOR BREAKOUT/MAKEUP OPERATIONS
1. For Breakout or Makeup, operate the red lever on the control valve as marked.
2. The Make-Up arm will rotate to the desired direction and will Breakout or Makeup the
joint, as needed.
3. During the operation, maintain good contact between the jaw and link dies and the tool
at all times.
4. If the tool moves away from the jaw, apply the pressure on the chain cylinder from the
control valve and re-adjust the tool position toward the jaw, when and if needed.
ADJUSTING TORQUE
Check the pressure by retracting the break out cylinder completely all the way in and read the
pressure gauge for maximum pressure. If additional pressure is required, keep turning the
setscrew.
When the correct pressure has been achieved, secure the setscrew in position by locking it with
the nut “A” by turning it clockwise.

MAINTENANCE
PREVENTITIVE MAINTENANCE
1. On link part# LNK-S-MCH*, the tong dies (reference 1) are secured into their dovetail
slots by a load spring and a ball (reference 2).
2. To replace a tong die, simply knock out the die by using a soft material hammer and a
soft material punch and push the die completely out.
3. ** WARNING ** SAFETY GLASES SHOULD BE WORN! The ball and spring, that is behind
the tong die, are under pressure and may be ejected.
1. Place the tong die over the dovetail slot and with a soft material hammer, position the
tong die half way into the slot.
2. Do not cover the hole for the spring and the ball.
3. Insert the spring (reference 25) and the ball (reference 24) into the hole in the center of
the slot.
4. Continue to punch the tong die until the die is even at both sides of the slot (top and
bottom).
INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHANGING OUT TONG DIES ON PART# LNK-2-ALN-*
1. On part# LNK-2-ALN-*, the tong dies (reference1) are held in place by the allen set
screw, ball and spring (reference 2).
2. To replace a tong die, simply remove the set screw using a ¼” allen wrench then knock
out the die by using a soft material hammer and a soft material punch and push the die
completely out.
1. Place the tong die over the dovetail slot and with a soft material hammer, tap the
tong die all the way into the slot.
2. Insert the spring, ball and set screw (reference 2) into the hole at the back of the link
