Honor before Honors

Dear Williams School Families, We hope everyone has had a well deserved Thanksgiving break. Grandparents Day was wonderful and well attended. We estimate that we had approximately 350 people for our performance and many of our guests stayed after the program to enjoy the museum. Thank you to our teachers, students and the many volunteers who helped to make this day a success. Including our grandparents, parents and guests in our celebration made our day much more memorablethank you! Now that our Thanksgiving Break has passed, it is time to start with the preparations for the end of the year. We will be very busy over the next few weeks starting with the Holiday Band Concert, our 7th/8th grade Forensics Competition, 3rd grade guest lunch, rehearsals at Christ and St. Lukes, the Holiday Feast, the Alumni Reunion and finally, the Carol Service. Please look to the Broadcast during the coming weeks for more details.
Kind regards, Melanie

Keeping Williams Green Weekly Tip

We hope that each person pledges to: Learn: About the recycling options in my community. I will find out what materials are collected for recycling in my community at americarecyclesday.org. Apply: Reduce my personal waste by recycling. Within the next month, I will start to recycle one new type of material.

Kindergarten is starting a new recycling project that involves one of our most used tools in class Crayons! We are participating in a National Crayon Recycle Program that works with Crazy Crayons, LLC to keep unwanted and broken crayons out of our landfills. We will be collecting broken or unwanted crayons in a specially designated recycle bucket outside our classroom. Students may bring in crayons from home and drop them off in the recycle bin. Please leave the wrappers on the crayons! It is hard to sort the black, purple and blue crayons without the wrappers. We will accept all crayons for recycling with or without the wrappers. Thank you! The kindergarten class will box and ship the crayons to the recycling center. If you have any small shipping boxes that you are willing to donate to help with the boxing and shipping we will accept those too! Thank you for your help on our new project. We are excited to be helping out our earth in such a fun and colorful way!

First Grade is collecting batteries to recycle the bins are next to the wooden book deposit box in the quad. Please send in your batteries. Mrs. Adams recycles laser and inkjet cartridges and old cell phones.

Who was D.A. Taylor?

On behalf of the D.A. Taylor Foundation, we would like to welcome you to the 7th annual DA Taylor Middle School Basketball Challenge. Over the past six years, this event has raised almost $20,000 for the foundation. D.A. attended Norfolk Academy since the third grade. He was a high honor roll student, as well as a National Merit Semifinalist. He also excelled in athletics, earning honors in multiple sports including football, basketball and lacrosse. D.A. was highly motivated to succeed, and was a positive influence in the lives of all with whom he associated. On February 17, 1995, D.A. became ill with meningococcal meningitis. After a courageous battle with the disease for just over a month, D.A. succumbed to it, losing his fight against it on March 20, 1995. His family and friends founded the D.A. Taylor Charitable Foundation in 2006 to honor D.A.'s spirit and the quintessential and symbolic good that he

represented. His existence naturally touched all of us, and it is our proud obligation to prolong that spirit through his name. The mission of the foundation is to identify youths with the will to better themselves through academic study and then to instill a sense of hope, and perhaps then purpose, by giving them the confidence and means to attain higher education. Our goal this year is to raise $5,000 this year through this Middle School Basketball Challenge. We will be presenting a sportsmanship award at the end of the tournament to a deserving team in each bracket. All proceeds will go directly to the foundation. We would like to thank the many volunteers who have dedicated their time in order to make this event happen and also would like to thank a friend of the foundation who donated all the t-shirts for the players and staff. Special thanks go out to the Southeastern Virginia Basketball Officials Association who has graciously volunteered their time to referee all of the games for the event. If you would like to make a donation to the foundation please make your check out to the DA Taylor Foundation please see one of the staff members. Thanks again for supporting the D.A. Taylor Foundation. Last of the Three Cities Cocktail Parties Home of Mike & LeAnne Benedetto January 14, 2012
