Calculus Project Post AP

Post exam – 40 points + 10 points for School Year Reflection

Your assignment is to summarize a calculus idea creatively. Suggestions include--but are not limited to--the following:

1. Create a calculus video and/or song – this will be presented in class by the last day for SENIORS!

2. Make a calculus board game due by the last day for SENIORS!

3. Teach a calculus lesson or a mathematical proof or theorem – this will be presented in class by the last day for
SENIORS!

4. Investigate the use of Calculus in Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Biology, etc. (Write 5 paragraphs about your
topic.)

5. The Cooking Project – Explained on back, must be presented in class by the last day for SENIORS!

6. Volume Model Cross Section Project – I will put examples up on classroom (ignore any rubric you see online
please) Build a model:
1. Carefully graph the region using a somewhat larger than normal scale.
2. Draw lines at 1/8 to ¼ inch intervals across the region perpendicular to the appropriate axis.
3. Carefully measure or calculate the length of each of these lines. Use this for the appropriate
dimension for the question. For example, this may be the side of the square cross-section, or the
diameter of a semi-circular section.
4. Use the dimension to draw a series of squares, semi-circles, or whatever from cardboard, plywood,
or foam board.
5. Cut these out and assemble them on the original region you graphed to approximate the solid figure.
Tape or glue them in place.
6. Extra: Calculate the area of each piece and multiply it by the thickness (or the distance between
pieces) and see how closely this comes to the calculated volume.
7. OTHER Creative Project Ideas must be approved by me.

FOOD PROJECT Explanation/Expectations

As a final project and a way to celebrate all of your hard work this year, you will choose a recipe to make
and bring the finished product to class. Your recipe should not require refrigeration.
1. The recipe must involve some cooking or baking.
2. It must contain at least 5 ingredients.
3. Box mixes count as 1 ingredient
4. You may use canned icing but it does not count as one of the five ingredients.
5. Decorative touches do not count as ingredients. You may use them to make your project look
better.
6. Each person must have a project. You may work in pairs or individually.
7. You will sign up for a particular day on which you will bring your project to class. Your recipe must
be cleared with the teacher.
8. The write-up of the recipe is part of the project.
9. Whatever is made must be edible.
10. You may do the write-up of the project on the computer.

Project Write-Up:

1. Cover sheet with the name of your project and your name(s). Be neat and creative. You may do
this on the computer.
2. The complete recipe must be shown, with each ingredient and its amount. Remember to include
directions on how to make your recipe.
3. On another sheet of paper, write the recipe using calculus problems to model quantities in your
recipe. They can model amounts, temperatures, baking times, etc. For example, ½ cup of milk
might be expressed as:
1
∫ 𝑥 𝑑𝑥
0
Be creative – use many resources. Use a variety of different types of problems. Show the
problem and its complete solution. You must create at least 5 problems!

YOU MUST HAVE A TOTAL OF 5 CALCULUS PROBLEMS!!!
