Social and environmental justice

Section 24 of the South African Constitution 1enshrines charges that ‘everyone has
the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being and to
have the environment protected for the benefit of present and future generations,
through reasonable legislative and other measures that prevent pollution and
ecological degradation and secure ecologically sustainable development and use of
natural resources while promoting justifiable economic and social development’.
However, acts of environmental injustice are increasing in South Africa. The
attempts made to control emission of poisonous gas into the atmosphere seem
ineffective to totally 2 eradicate airborne fumes of dangerous gases. Continued
breathing of such air, could cause lethal sicknesses in many residents. Municipalities
have a role to play in ensuring adherence to environmentally healthy standards in
order to prevent ecological 3 degradation of our environment. The environment is
the only resource we have for the livelihood of future generations.
Glossary:
1
Enshrines - place a provision in an appropriate place.
2
