The oil end of the bushing was immersed in metal tank (diameter 1200 mm, height 2700 mm)
filled with transformer oil. Oil temperature was maintained at the 90 °C ± 2 °C. This
temperature was measured 3 cm below the surface, and 30 cm from the bushing.
Conductor losses were simulated by heater inserted along the bushing central tube. The
length of the heater was approximately equal to the length of the central tube. The power of
the heater was adjusted to 210 W. The heater was grid-supplied until the thermal equilibrium
between the oil and the bushing was reached. After the voltage application the heater was
supplied by a petrol driven generator. Four thermocouples were placed along the heater, 1130
mm, 1700 mm, 2930 mm and 3620 mm from the lower side end.
The voltage 336 kV, was applied on the bushing when thermal equilibrium between the oil and
the bushing was reached. The bushing capacitance and dielectric dissipation factor were
measured. The ambient air (Ta) oil (To) temperatures were recorded at each measurement.

Test setup
Bushing was mounted vertically on a test tank which was filled with transformer oil. In order to
maintain a desired oil temperature test tank was equipped with a heater and circulating pump.
Oil temperature was maintained at 60 ± 2 K above ambient temperature. Oil level was
maintained with a conserver tank placed at the appropriate height. Oil was maintained at the
level which did not exceed 1/3 of the bushings external dimensions.

Current loop was assembled with a water cooled conductors and current was applied by
means of test transformers.

Connection between the bushing and the water cooled conductors in air was assembled with a
bus-bars of 1200 mm2. Connection in oil was assembled with 2 copper cords of 300 mm2 and
oil-air bushing DIN type (Ir=2000 A).

Temperature of oil was measured with three thermocouples placed inside the test tank
approximately 3 cm from the top of the tank, and at a distance of 30 cm from the bushing.
Ambient temperatures were measured with three thermocouples placed in oil containers
(0,5 l) at mid-height of the bushing and at a distance of 1 m from the bushing.

Temperature decrease from the bushings termination was measured with thermocouples
placed 1 m from the connection in oil part and 0,5 m on air side to prove that the external
connections do not contribute to the cooling of the bushing under test (≤5 K/m).

Detailed thermocouple layout is given in Annex 2.

IEC 61463 AG5 LEVEL

1. SUMMARY
A Transformer bushing type GSB 420/1250/0.6 with composite insulator constructed and
manufactured by ABB. The test object was mounted using a stiff test frame at 20 degrees to
vertical direction for seismic tests.

Initially, static bending tests were performed in order to calibrate half bridge strain gauges (S1/S2)
measuring moment at the base of composite insulator flange. The static bending tests in each
direction were followed by snap-back test. Both static and snap-back tests were performed with
the bushing in vertical direction using a stiff test frame. Then, the test object mounted at 20
degrees to vertical direction and tested under sine logarithmic sweep excitation along each one of
the main X, Y and Z directions in order its natural frequencies and their damping to be determined.
Conditioning tri-axial earthquake tests along X, Y and Z directions were executed according to IEC
61463:1996+A1:2000 [1] for ground acceleration level 0.50g (AG5). The base motion was increased
with a factor of 1.5 considering of super elevation factor K=1.5 (input level 0.75g). An artificial time
history, pre-approved according to C1.4.4 of IEC60068-2-57 [2] was chosen for seismic verification
test. The tests were run under acceleration control. In order to adjust to the available displacement
capacity of the shaking table the lowest frequency content is approximately 1.0Hz. The testing
procedure was completed by repetition of resonance searches along each one of the main X, Y and
Z directions.

Bending moment about local directions at base of composite insulator (S1/S2), stresses on cast
aluminium flange (S3, S4), displacement and acceleration at top terminal (air side connection - A1,
D1X/D1Y) and acceleration at bottom terminal (oil side connection - A2) are summarised in Table 1
for conditioning tri-axial earthquake test according to to IEC 61463:1996+A1:2000 [1] for AG5

IEC 61463 AG5 LEVEL

2. INTRODUCTION

The present test has been performed after an agreement between the ABB Power Grids
Components (Sweden) and the Laboratory for Earthquake Engineering (LEE) at National Technical
University of Athens (NTUA), Greece.

In LEE a 6 DOF Shaking Table is functioning with full electronic control and data acquisition system
of 48 channels. The description of the testing facility is given in Chapter 8, page 10 of the present
report.

The earthquake tests concern the following specimen:

A Transformer Bushing type GSB 420/1250/0.6 with composite insulator was manufactured by ABB
Power Grids Components (Sweden). The unit had approximately a service mass of 595Kg and total
length of 5560 mm. The bushing was tested without any additional mass at both of its terminals.
The bushing was mounted using a stiff test frame (steel turret), at an angle of 20 degrees to vertical
direction (Figure 1). The stiff frame was fixed directly on the shaking table (Figure 2). A whole view
of the specimen on the shaking table is shown in Figure 3. The orientation of local and main axis is
presented in Figure 1. In Appendix A, the ABB dimension drawing of the bushing is presented.

The test was performed on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th of March 2016. Participants in the tests
are as following:

Witnessing on behalf of ABB:

Andreas Backström
Witnessing on behalf of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd:

The test was performed and evaluated by the Dr. Civil Engineer, H.P. Mouzakis, Assistant Professor
of School of Civil Engineering. Test data were analysed by the Dr. Civil Engineer L. Karapitta. S.
Vranakis is the supervisor of Quality Management. The Electronic Engineer A. Asimakopoulos, the
Mechanical Engineer G. Mikelis and the technicians M. Koliarakis and P. Mouzakis helped
throughout the test for its successful performance.

3. SEVERITY OF THE TEST

3.1. Static Bending Test

Strain gauges S1 and S2 that were placed at base of composite insulator for measurement bending
about local Y’ and X’ axis were calibrated by a static force of 9.8 kN applied and released at air side
terminal of bushing.

Static bending tests were performed in both horizontal local axes separately. Each test was
repeated three times. The force was imposed at a distance of 3.72m from bottom of insulator.
During these tests the bushing was mounted in vertical direction using a special steel turret as
shown in Figure 4. The experimental set–up for static bending test is shown in Figures 4 and 5.

3.2. Snap-Back Test

The static bending test in each direction was followed by a snap - back test. A static force of
magnitude 9.8kN was applied at air side terminal of bushing. The force was imposed in two cycles
at level 50% (4.9kN) and 100% (9.8kN). Then the load suddenly released and consequently free
vibration of bushing was recorded. The level of moment at base of bushing due to applied force at
tip was similar to the one expected during seismic test. During the test three displacement
transducers attached to bushing (from tip equally every 1/3rd of bushing flange length-D1, D2, D3)
recorded the free oscillation of bushing. Additional the bending moment at base of insulator and
the acceleration at air side terminal (A1) were recorded. The instrumentation set-up is shown in
Figure 5.

Fundamental modal frequency was assessed based on strain and acceleration time histories (IEC
61463:1996+A1:2000- Annex B [1]). Damping ratio was calculated using the logarithmic decrement
method by the following expression:
1 1  A0 
ζ ln  
Ν 2π  AN 
where N is the number of cycles, seven cycles were taken into account; A0 and AN are the
amplitudes of acceleration of fourth and seventh cycle respectively. In Tables 2 and 3 the
fundamental natural frequencies and the damping of the specimen are shown. In Figures 6 to 9 the
obtained results (imposed force and recorded strain, acceleration and displacement time histories)
are presented. Minor remaining displacement after release of the force, is showing in figures 6b-6d
and 8b-8d.

direction is presented.

3.3. Sine logarithmic sweep

A sine logarithmic sweep signal has been applied. The frequency range was 0.50-35.0Hz at a rate of
one octave per minute. These tests were executed along each one of the main axes X, Y and Z
separately, with amplitude of vibration of 0.05g. Since sine sweep rate is one octave per minute
and start frequency is 0.50 Hz the exciting frequency versus time is given by the following
expression:

3.4. Time history tests in accordance to IEC61463:1996+A1:2000 for AG5 Level 0.50g
A time history test in accordance to RRS for AG5 Level 0.50g of IEC61463:1996+A1:2000 [1] was
performed. The test level is 1.50 the ground level taking into account a super elevation factor of
1.50. In Figure 11, the Required Response Spectrum (RRS) IEC 61463:Level AG5 (0.5g) increased by
a factor of 1.5 to level 0.75g for damping 2% is depicted.

Three different acceleration time histories in X, Y and Z main axes, pre-approved according to C1
4.4 of IEC60068-2-57 [2] were used. The total duration of time histories is 30 sec of which the
strong part is 20sec. The time histories were provided by ABB Corporate Research. The time history
tests were run in acceleration control. In order to adjust to the available displacement capacity of
the shaking table the lowest frequency content is approximately 1.0Hz. In Figure 12, the
acceleration time histories in X, Y and Z axis used for seismic verification test are presented.

3.4.1. Preconditioning Triaxial Test in accordance to IEC61463:1996+A1:2000 for AG5 Level 0.50g
(input level 0.75g)
A triaxial earthquake test along X, Y and Z axes at levels of 50% of the level of conditioning test
(input 0.75g) was performed. This test was executed in order to tune the shaking table.

3.4.2. Conditioning Tri-axial Test in accordance to IEC61463:1996+A1:2000 for AG5 Level 0.50g
(input level 0.75g)
A tri-axial earthquake test in X, Y and Z global axes using pre-approval earthquake was performed.
In Figures13a-13c the comparison between acceleration Test Response Spectrum (TRS) and
Required Response Spectrum (RRS) defined by IEC 61463:1996+A1:2000, for AG5 Level (0.5g) [1]
(1.5 times RRS 0.5g) for damping 2% are presented for X, Y and Z global axes. The TRS for damping
2% envelops the RRS in frequency range 1.0-35 Hz.

3.5. Sine logarithmic sweep

After time history tests of AG5 Level, a sine logarithmic sweep signal has been applied, in order to
check for any variation of resonance characteristics of specimen. The frequency range was 0.50-
35.0Hz at a rate of one octave per minute. These tests were executed along each one of the main
axes X, Y and Z separately, with amplitude of vibration of 0.05g. The exciting frequency versus time
is given by the following expression:

Table Motion Control Software

The main functions provided by the software are the following:
1. Waveform creations; 2. real-time test control: 3; control enhancement iteration; 4, table motion
analysis; 5. library handling; and 6. graphic display.
Waveform creation
Several types of waveforms can be created and stored in a special profile library. These profiles can
then be allocated as desired to the various motion control axes on the table for a test. The
following type of waveforms can be created: sinusoidal, sine sweep, random, random based on a
response spectrum definition, and tabulated entry of field recorded earthquakes. The response
spectra software utilises a special technique, which allows long random time histories to be created

NTUA EARTHQUAKE TEST Page 11

IEC 61463 AG5 LEVEL

and iterates on the random waveform more exactly to the response spectra definition. It is
generally believed that this results in a higher-quality test.

Test Control
The software supports flexible selection and scaling of profiles for usage in single or multiple
degree-of-freedom seismic testing. For example, six profiles could be selected and assigned to each
axis for a full six degree-of-freedom test. The actual real-time control software synchronises the
starting and stopping of the test, and control, the D/A and A/D hardware. Several steps are taken
to safely initiate and terminate the test process.
Control Enhancement Iteration
There are available special software procedures for compensating the drive way waveforms to
obtain greater response accuracy and fidelity. The technique involves determining a transfer
function for the system and then modifying the drive signal to account for the effect of the transfer
function. The functions provided are: transfer function determination, auto and cross-spectral
density function determination, coherence function determination, and compensated drive
determination. The transfer function models are stored in a special library and can be applied to
different tests as required.
Table Motion Analysis.
Several table motion parameters are usually recorded for each test. These parameters can be
displayed immediately and special calculations are performed to verify proper table performance.
These can be compared to similar calculations performed on the desired table motion waveforms.
Functions included: response spectra, acceleration, Fourier amplitude and total earthquake energy
calculations.
Library Handling Utilities
Several libraries discussed above, are used to organise information related to the seismic testing
process. Special software functions are available to maintain this information and they include
listing, deletion, and copying commands. The copy command allows test data to be transferred to
archival tape or disk, and can access properly formatted profiles created independent of the
seismic software.
Graphic Display
Throughout the seismic testing process, provision is made to allow easy graphical display of time
history and special information of flexible formats.
Data Analysis Software
When large-channel data acquisition is resident on the seismic computer system, a companion data
analysis package is available to streamline the examination and reduction of the specimen data.
The functions to be developed have not been finalised, but a preliminary list is presented. The
software functions fall into three categories: a. configuration; b. the series analysis; c. spectrum
analysis.
a. Configuration.
The software provides the ability to configure the data acquisition channels with special names to
identify the actual transducers located at the specimen. In this way, the data for single-output
transducers such at LVDT's accelerometers and multiple-output transducers such as rosette gauges
can be analysed by using logical and meaningful names. This feature reduces the possibility of error
when manipulating large amounts of data.
b. Time Series Analysis.
Several functions are available to operate upon data in the time domain. Some of the functions
result in new time histories and others determine key characteristics. They are listed below:
-decimation
-arithmetic manipulation

-digital filtering
-differentiation
-integration
-mean level
-extreme value
-rms acceleration
-total earthquake energy
-strain gauge reduction.
c. Spectrum Analysis.
Several functions are available which operate upon data in the time domain and result in various
types of frequency spectrums. They are listed below:
-forward and inverse Fourier transformation
-response spectrum
-auto-spectral density
-cross-spectral density
-ordinary coherence
-transfer function
