REVISION HISTORY
BOEING RECOMMENDS THAT EACH OPERATOR EXAMINE THIS SERVICE BULLETIN IMMEDIATELY.
CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS
None.
BACKGROUND
This service bulletin and a kit of parts were prepared to make a change to the overhead duct support installation
in the passenger compartment. This change installs lanyard support brackets and lanyards to keep the air
conditioning (AC) overhead ducts from falling down.
Boeing has received 600 reports of leaking AC overhead ducts on 500 737 and 757 airplanes from multiple
airlines. Two of these reports described the overhead duct failures caused the ceiling panels to fall into the
passenger cabin. The inboard edge of the ceiling panels are attached to the diffusion fittings of the AC overhead
ducts.
The FAA has stated that the minimum height of the evacuation zone of the passenger cabin is 73 inches as
measured from the floor. This corresponds to the 95 percentile male height. Review of the ceiling panel
configurations and actual reports from in-service airplanes shows that ceiling panels may drop to 63 inches or
less.
Incorporation of this service bulletin will keep any failed overhead ducts from causing the ceiling panels to drop
below their minimum height as required by the FAA.
The change done by this service bulletin is not necessary for airplanes in Group 4 that have been changed by
Boeing Service Bulletin 737-21-1140, Replacement of Oval Ducts with Round Ducts.
As part of a service bulletin validation program, this change was completed on airplane PW234 by Service
Bulletin 737-21-1131, Revision 1. The change completed on airplane PW234 by Service Bulletin 737-21-1131,
Revision 1 is equivalent to the change given in the Revision 2 of this service bulletin. Airplane PW234 has the
configuration of a Group 2 airplane.
Boeing Service Related Problem (SRP) 737-SRP-21-0131 is related to this service bulletin
In the passenger compartment, remove and keep the ceiling panels. At the body station frames 420 through
887, do a visual check. Identify the body station frames that are open for the lanyard installation. Install two
lanyard support brackets on each open body station frame. Install two lanyard hook brackets on the adjacent
air conditioning nozzle fittings. Connect the lanyard assemblies between the lanyard support brackets and the
lanyard hook brackets. Install the kept ceiling panels.
EFFECTIVITY
737-300, -400 and -500 airplanes. See Paragraph 1.A. for effectivity.
COMPLIANCE
Boeing recommends that this service bulletin be done when all of the parts, manpower and equipment are
available.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airworthiness Directive 2005-03-02, Amendment 39-13958, is related to
this service bulletin.
Boeing warranty remedies are not available for the configuration changes given in this service bulletin.

D. Description
In the passenger compartment, remove and keep the ceiling panels. At the body station frames 420
through 887, a visual check is done. Open the body station frames are identified for the lanyard
installation. Two lanyard support brackets are installed on each open body station frame. Two
lanyard hook brackets are installed on the adjacent air conditioning nozzle fittings. The lanyard
assemblies are installed between the lanyard support brackets and the lanyard hook brackets. The
kept ceiling panels are installed.
The airplane effectivity is divided into 4 airplane groups because of different overhead duct installation
configurations. Group 1 is for 737-300 airplanes, Group 2 is for 737-400 airplanes, Group 3 is for
737-500 airplanes, and Group 4 is for 737-400 airplanes possibly changed by Boeing Service Bulletin
737-21-1140.
Revision 1: no more work is necessary on airplanes changed as shown in the initial release of this
service bulletin.
Revision 2: no more work is necessary on airplanes changed as shown in the initial and Revision 1
release of this service bulletin.
Revision 3 - For Group 1-3 Airplanes, no more work is necessary on airplanes changed as shown in
the initial release or in the Revision 1and Revision 2 releases of this service bulletin. No more work
is necessary for Group 4 Airplanes that have been changed by Boeing Service Bulletin 737-21-1140.
E. Compliance
Boeing recommends that this service bulletin be done when all of the parts, manpower and equipment
are available.
For airplanes in Group 4 that have incorporated Boeing Service Bulletin 737-21-1140, the changes
given in this service bulletin are not necessary. Boeing Service Bulletin 737-21-1140 changed from
oval ducts to round ducts which makes the changes given in this service bulletin not applicable.
F. Approval
This service bulletin was examined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The changes
specified in this service bulletin comply with the applicable regulations and are FAA approved, as well
as European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)/Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) approved for all EASA/
JAA approved airplanes listed in the service bulletin effectivity. This service bulletin and its approval
were based on the airplane in its original Boeing delivery configuration or as modified by other
approved Boeing changes.
If an airplane has a non-Boeing modification or repair that affects a component or system also affected
by this service bulletin, the operator is responsible for obtaining appropriate regulatory agency
approval before incorporating this service bulletin.
This service bulletin has been approved by the FAA. In addition, the Manager of the FAA Seattle
Aircraft Certification Office approves the action (i.e. inspection or modification) defined in this service
bulletin as an alternative method of compliance to the requirements of paragraph (b) of
AD 2005-03-02. All provisions of AD 2005-03-02 that are not specifically referenced in the above
statement remain fully applicable and must be complied with.
G. Manpower
The table below shows an estimate of the man-hours necessary to install 60 lanyards on each
airplane. This estimate is for an airplane that needs lanyards installed at all possible lanyard locations.
The actual time will vary depending upon how many lanyards that actually get installed. This estimate
is for direct labor only, done by an experienced crew. Adjust the estimate with operator man-hour data
if necessary. The estimate does not include lost time. These are some examples of lost time:
— Time to adjust to the workplace
— Time to schedule the work
— Time to inspect the work
— Time to find the tools.
— Time to cure the parts
Note: These estimates are for an airplane with the typical lanyard installation on the typical number
of open body station frames.
