WHAT IS SANITATION

-the process of keeping places free from dirt, infection, disease etc. by removing waste, trash or garbage,
by cleaning streets, washing yourself, safe dinking water etc.
WHY SANITATION IS IMPORTANT
FOR HEALTH
- Good sanitation can prevent you from diarrhoea and can also prevent other serious diseases
- And reduce human exposure to pathogens or infectious diseases
FOR GOOD ECONOMIC INVESTMENT
- When you practice good sanitation, you save money on health care and treatment
FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
- When you keep yourself and your surroundings clean you fall less sick often & more likely to
attend school, work regularly
- To have healthy mind
FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
- When you get rid of waste properly, you can help to protect water sources, it also means you
don’t have to smell the disgusting mess around you
- To provide healthy living environment to everyone
- To protect natural resources
ITS ACHIEVABLE
- Better sanitation is possible, but it all starts with you
COMPONENTS OF SANITATION
1. WATER SANITATION
2. FOOD SANITATION
3. AIR SANITATION
4. SEWAGE DISPOSAL
5. REFUSE DISPOSAL
6. VECTOR AND VERMIN CONTROL

1, WATER SANITATION
-Public water supply must be
1. safe
2. cheap
3. reasonably soft
-treatment of water
1. boiling
2. chlorination
3.Iodine treatment (water refilling station)
4. Filtration
5. water analysis

2. FOOD SANITATION
1.wash your hands before you touch food
2.keep your hands away from your mouth and nose
3.do not cough or sneeze on food or dishes
4.wash your hands after going to the toilet
5.secure health permit (for food handlers)

3. AIR SANITATION
1. Fumigation (fogging)
2, formaldehyde (slow acting air purifier)

4.SEWAGE DISPOSAL
1..on site sewer system (collect, treat, and disperse wastewaster which aims to remove contaminants from
sewage to produce an effluent that is suitable to discharge to the surrounding environment or an intended
reuse application)
2.full sewage system (or point of origin to to point of treatment)
3. pit latrines(septic tank)
5. REFUSE DISPOSAL
1. dumping
2. sanitary landfill
3. composting
4. inceniration
5. reduction and salvage
6. burial
7. feeding to animals

6. VECTOR CONTROL
-CHEMICAL METHOD
1.insecticides
2.larvicides
-PHYSICAL METHODS
1.removing unused plastics, old buckets, water storage for long time
-BIOLOGICAL CONTROL
1. releasing gambusia (mosquito fish) to ponds

WHAT CAUSES POOR SANITATION

-poor sanitation causes many infectious disease including cholera, typhoid, infectious hepaitis and polio,
and intestinal worm infections
-allowing flies that spreads the infection to breed (insert fogging program)
-poor hygiene-
-poor water quality (insert WRS and water analysis program)
-lack of education of how easily the infection can spread in the home and between people

HOW TO PREVENT DISEASE FROM SPREADING

1. Wash your hands with safe water and soap
2. Provide hand sanitizer
3. Educate and raise awareness
4. Promote clean water practices
5. Eradicate open defacation
6. Follow proper hygiene practices
7. Use safe and clean bottles or buckets to store water in
8. Clean your environment to avoid bad smells and breeding places for flies
