A National Educational Campaign

RoboSprint2012extendsanextraordinarychanceoflearningroboticstoall theuniversitystudentsofPakistan.Thisyear,CASElaunchesanovelideain the field of Pakistani education, a National Student Coordination Program (NSCP). The new concept transforms RoboSprint 2012 from merely a robotics competition into a fullfledge national educational campaign. We willensurethateveryPakistanistudentwithoutanydiscriminationwillhave accesstothetechnologicalskillsofthenewera.Alltheparticipatingteams cangainfromtheexpertiseofCASERoboticsGroup(CRG)byNSCP&Special Robotics Seminars developed exclusively by the Organizing Committee of RoboSprint2012.WeonbehalfofCASE&CRGwishtheverybestofluckto allwhowishtobeapartofthisexcitingexperience.Pleasehavealookat Section13and14ofthisRuleBookfordetailspertainingtoourNSCPand conductingSpecialRoboticsSeminarsrespectively.

1.COMPETITIONOUTLINE Eachteamconsistsofnomorethantwoautomaticrobots.TherobotscanpickanyONE ofthecorrespondingColoredFlagsfromthefourTeamFlagPostsandplacethem on any of the two Fort Keys. This will automatically open the corresponding teams Gate to the Golden Temple. Bridge connecting the Golden Temple to the teams arenaisbrokenandmustbemendedbyplacingapreloadedPlankintothemissing slot.TherobotcanskipplacingthePLANKinspecialcircumstancesentailedinSection5 of this document. The robot can pick up the Checkered Flag and place it in the GoldenTemplesFlagPost.Thefirstteamthatplacesitsuccessfullyisthewinnerof the match and will be named ROBO SALADIN. The name is inspired by the great IslamicSultannamed,SalahuddinAyubi,whoconqueredJerusalemin1187AD. EachmatchiscontestedbyRedandBlueteams.Amatchlasts3minutes. In case no team can earn the title of ROBO SALADIN in the allotted 3 minutes match time,winnerwillbedecidedonthemaximumpointsscored. 2.GAMEFIELDSPECIFICATIONS 2.1 ThefieldconsistsofaGameAreahavingthedimensionsof1,200cmx400cm andsurroundedbyawoodenfencewithaheightof10cmandathicknessof2 cm.Thegamefieldisdividedequallyfortwoteamsbyawoodenfencewitha heightof10cmandathicknessof2cm.ThecompetingteamsareRedandBlue teams. Please see the Perspective view of the Game Area in Figure 1 and detaileddimensionsinFigure2toFigure4. 2.2 Whitelineswithawidthof3cmmadeofWhiteReflectorTapearedrawnonthe flooroftheGameArea.

2.3 The Game Area consists of a Golden Temple zone, Bridge zone, Team Center zonesandStartzones.PleaserefertoFigure5whichcomprisesofdimensionsof TeamCenterzonesandStartzones. 2.3.1 Each team has 2 Start zones: Start Zone 1 and Start Zone 2. Each Start Zone is a square with a length of 50 cm each side. Start zonesofbothteamsareinGreencolor. 2.3.2TeamCenterzoneconsistsofthreecircleswiththeradiusof150cm, 98.5cmand48.5cm.Distancesarefromtapecentertocenter.The outermostcirclehasfourflagpostswitharadiusof12cmeach. Each flag post contains the flag of corresponding color. A checkered flag post is situated in the middle of the Center Zone witharadiusof12cm.TeamCenterzoneattheinitiationofthe RoboSprint 2012 was kept in Green Color as depicted in the figures&contestvideo.Consideringtheeaseoftheparticipating students,wehavechangedthecoloroftheTeamCenterzoneto Blue or Red depending on which side the Team Center zone belongs. 2.3.3 Bridgezonehasadimensionof113.4cmx100cm.itconsistsofa BrokenAreawiththedimensionof40cmx30cmwithheight equal to the height of arena floor. The sliding Gate is present at theendofthiszonewithdimensionsuchthatthelengthisequal to the length of bridge zone i.e 120cm. It is please to be noted that the Gates shown in the figures or contest video are hypothetical. On the original field there will be an electronic barriersystemthatwillopenonceaColoredFlagisinsertedinto

theFortKey.Pleasedonotmakeanygamestrategieswhichrely onthisGatestructure. 2.3.4 Golden Temple zone is equally divided for both teams. Checkered Flag pole the same as given in 3.1. Only the Team Colored Flag is replacedwithaCheckeredFlaginGoldandTeamColor.

3.3 DetailsofdimensionsofTeamFlagPostswhichholdtheColoredFlagsaregiven inFigure7. 3.4 DetailsofdimensionsofFortKeyinwhichtheColoredFlagmustbeinsertedto opentheGatetotheGoldenTemplearegiveninFigure8. 3.5 Plank is made of thermopore sheet with a dimension of 30 cm x 20 cm and heightequaltofloorheightwhichis1.8cm.PleaseseedimensiondetailsofPlank inFigure9. 4.GAMEPROCEDURE 4.1 DurationofaMatch 4.1.1Eachmatchlaststhreeminutesatmost. 4.1.2 In any of the following cases, the match ends immediately (even before threeminutes). 4.1.2.1WhenROBOSALADINisachieved. 4.1.2.2Disqualificationisannouncedinthegame. 4.1.2.3Whentherefereefeelsthatthegamecannotcontinue. 4.2 Settingofrobots 4.2.1Twominutesaregivenforsettingofrobotsbeforethegamestarts. 4.2.2Atmosttwomembersofeachteamcanengageinsettingofrobots.

4.2.3ThePlankmustbeloadedduringthesetuptimeontherobot. 4.2.4Anyteamthatfailstocompletesettingoftherobots withintwo minutes can resume the setting again once the game starts. Match will start instantaneouslyasthesetuptimeelapses. 4.3 Deploymentoftherobotsandteammembersatthestartofthegame 4.3.1Robot1mustbestartedinanyoneoftheStartzones. 4.3.2Robot2mustbestartedinanyoneoftheStartzones. 4.3.3 After starting any robots, the team members must leave the game field immediately. 5.TASKS&RESTRICTIONS Oncethegamehasbegun,eachteamshallcompletethefollowingtasks: 5.1 Robot picks any ONE of the FOUR corresponding colored flags and inserts it in anyONEoftheTWOFortKeys.ThiswillopentheGatetotheGoldenTemple. 5.2 Robot places the preloaded Plank in the Broken Area of the Bridge zone to completethepathtoGoldenTemple.TherobotcannotcrosstheBridgeunlessit hasplacedthePlankpreciselyintotheBrokenArea. 5.3 IncaseaTeamdecidesnottopreloadaPlankandplaceitintheBrokenAreaof the Bridge for any reasons whatsoever, it is mandatory to inform the Referee beforethestartoftheMatch.Insuchacase,afterplacingtheColoredFlaginto theFortKey,anautomaticRetrywillbeawarded.Theteamhastoswitchoffthe robot,takearetryfromanywherebehindthewhitetapedlinejoiningthetwo Fort Keys. Once the team is ready it will inform the Referee and after an

additional wait of 10 seconds which will be served as a Penalty, Referee will allow the robot to start again. In such a scenario, the robot will bypass the BrokenAreawithoutplacingthePlankandcanstraightawayheadfortheFlag PostofGoldenTemple.Nopointswillbedeductedforthisstrategyandonlya timepenaltyof10secondswillbeserved. 5.4 5.5 In any cases of dropping the Colored Flag on the Game Area, the dropped flag cannotbereusedanyfurtherinthematch.IfaColoredFlagisdropped,Robot canuseotherthreecoloredflags.Onaretry,ColoredFlagscanberearranged ontheColoredFlagPosts. 5.6 In case a robot drops a Checkered Flag before crossing the white taped line joiningthetwoFortKeys,itwillhavetotakeaRetryfromanyoftheStartzones and the Checkered Flag will be placed in its respective place of corresponding TeamCenterzone. 5.7 IncasearobotdropsaCheckeredFlagwhileitwasontheBridge,headingfor theGoldenTemple,whileplacingthePlankorwhileintheGoldenTemplezone; itwillhavetotakeaRetryfromanypointbehindthewhitetapedlinejoiningthe twoFortKeys.Inthiscase,theCheckeredFlagcanbepreloadedontotherobot. 6.ROBOTRETRIES 6.1 6.2 Teammembersareallowedtotouchtherobotswhilepreparingforaretry. Aretrycanbemadeonlyaftertherefereespermission. RobotpickstheCheckeredFlagandplacesitattheGoldenTemplesFlagPost.

ThereisnorestrictiononnumberofRetriesarobottakes.

AnautomaticrobotcantakearetryfromanyStartzonesirrespectiveofwhereit initiallystarted.

6.5 Duringaretry,theteamcanrequesttherefereetobringtheflagbacktotheir originalpositioniftheyweresuccessfullyinsertedintheFortKeys.Theearned scorestillremains.Noextrascorewillbeawardedoncallingaretryandredoing thetasksalreadydonepreviously. 6.6 Duringaretry,theteamcanbringalltheColoredFlagsheldbytherobotsduring askingfortheretry(theconditionoftherobotwhentheretrywasasked)back totheStartzones.HoweverthedimensionintheStartzonemustfollowtherule onstartingtherobotswritteninSection8clause5and6.OtherwisetheColored FlagswillbeconsideredasDroppedObjects. 6.7 6.8 7.RULESDECIDINGTHEWINNERTEAM 7.1 The first team that successfully inserts the Checkered Flag in Golden Temples FlagPostisthewinnerofthegameandthematchends. 7.2 IfneitherteamachievesROBOSALADINattheendofthe3minutesmatch,the winnerisdecidedbasedontheearnedpoints.Theteamthatearnshigherscore isthewinner.Thescoreofeachtaskisdescribedasfollows: 7.2.1 RobotsuccessfullypicksupsingleColoredFlag.[10points] Therearenopointpenaltiesforaretry. IftheRobotdropsthecheckeredflag,pleaserefertoSection5clause6and7.

7.2.2 RobotsuccessfullyinsertssingleColoredFlagattheFortKey.Amaximum of2ColoredFlagscanbeinserted.[30points] 7.2.3 RobotsuccessfullyplacesthePlankintheBrokenArea.[100points] 7.2.4 RobotsuccessfullypicksuptheCheckeredFlag.[50points] 7.2.5 RobotsuccessfullyinsertstheCheckeredFlagintheGoldenTemplesFlag Post.[120points] 7.3 Thegameresult 7.3.1 Thegameresultisannouncedaftertheendofeachmatch. 7.3.2 TheMatchwillendwhen 7.3.2.1Threeminutesmatchtimeends. 7.3.2.2Oneoftheteamsisdisqualified. 7.3.2.3OneoftheteamsachievesthetitleofROBOSALADIN. 7.3.3 Atotalscoreof350pointscanbescored. 7.4 Bytheendof3minutestimeifbothteamshavethesamepointsthenwinner willbedecidedonthebasisofminimumtimetakentoachievethesamescore. 7.5 IfbothteamsreachtheGoldenTemplesFlagPostatthesametimeoroneteam reachestheFlagPostwhileotherisalreadytryingtoinserttheCheckeredFlag,it isabsolutelyfinetotryinsertingtheCheckeredFlagbytheteamarrivingsecond. Whichever team successfully inserts the flag in the battle will be titled ROBO SALADIN. It is please to be noted that actions of the robots during the duel shouldbetargetedtowardsinsertingtheflagonly.Anyintentionalprogramming sequenceswhichwouldtrytodamagetheotherrobotcanprompttherefereeto disqualifytheteamtryingtodoso.Thedecisionwillbeatthesolediscretionof thereferee.

In case of 7.5, if both teams drop their flags in the process, a retry will be awarded to both the teams which can be taken at any point behind the white tapedlinejoiningthetwoFortKeys.TheCheckeredFlagcanbepickedupand preloadedontotherobotinthiscase.Theteamwillbegivenasetuptimeof1 minute.AGOsignalbytherefereewhistlewillallowtheteammembersofboth teamstostarttheirrespectiverobots.TherobotwhichwillplacetheCheckered FlagbeforetheotheronewillbedeclaredasROBOSALADIN.

7.7 In case process of 7.6 yields the same result as entailed in 7.5 then there will againbearetryawardedbuttherewillbenosetuptimefollowingthereferees award of a retry. The team which sets up and initiates the robot in minimum timewillhavethebenefit.Assoonastherobotissetup,teammembercanstart it without waiting for the referees GO whistle. Process will repeat as in a suddendeathcaseuntilaclearwinnerisidentified. 7.8 Ifthematchtimeof3minutesiselapsedandnoteamcouldwinROBOSALADIN thenthewinnerwillbetheteamscoringthemaximumpoints.Incasethescores arethesame,theteamwhichwouldhavescoredthosepointsinminimumtime willwinthematch.Judgesmayrefertothevideofootageinsuchacase. 8.ROBOTDESIGNSPECIFICATIONS 8.1 Each team is recommended to build 2 Automatic robots but a team can participatewithonlyonerobotaswell. 8.2 Robotcanbesplitintosubunitsaslongastheyareconnectedbyflexiblecords. Otherwisetheywillbeconsideredastwoseparaterobots.

8.3

The robots in the contest must be built by the team members from the same universityorinstitute.

8.4 Each robot must perform its tasks automatically after it is started by a team member. 8.5 In the Start zones, the robot must have its dimension no larger than 50 cm in width, 50 cm in length and 100 cm in height. There is no limitation on the dimensionoftherobotafterthegamestarts. 8.6 The total weight of both the robots with all the equipment mounted on the robotmustnotexceed35Kg.Incaseateamhasonlyonerobot,themaximum weight is 25Kg in that scenario. Weight will be done during the Robot ExaminationSessionandalsobeforethestartofeachmatch. 8.7 8.7.1 Eachrobothastobedrivenbyabatterypack.Itshouldbeastandalone system without any electric cords attached to the mains. No switching powersuppliesareallowed. 8.7.2 Thevoltageoftherobotelectricalsystemmustnotexceed50VDCatany single point. As many batteries as desired can be used for electrical operationsofarobot. 8.7.3 Pneumaticsystemsareallowedandthemaximumallowablepressureis6 bars. 8.7.4 Any other power sources are banned. If you desire to use one, please haveapriorapprovalfromtheChiefOrganizerofthecompetition. Powersourceoftherobots:

Safetyrules

8.8.1 Theuseofexplosives,fireordangerouschemicalsisprohibited. 8.8.2 Ifalaserisused,itmustbeofclass2orless. 9.PENALTIES Ifaviolationoccurs,20pointswillbeimmediatelydeductedeachtimetheviolationis made.Theviolationsarecategorizedasfollows: 9.1 Any part of any robot or the objects held by any robot move out of the game fieldorthespaceaboveit. 9.2 Norobotis allowedtoentertheotherTeamssidefromanysideoftheGame Field. 9.3 Any part of the robot physically touches the other Robot either directly or indirectly.ThisisonlynotvalidduringthebattleofinsertingtheCheckeredFlag in the Golden Temples Flag Post. Section 7 clause 5 will hold during that particularinstant. 9.4 Colored Flags or Checkered Flags cannot be gripped from the top 10cm flag area. Teams should grip the flag from underneath the top10cm flag area. No score will be awarded and such Flags will be placed back into their original positions.RefertoFigure6. 9.5 Other actions that infringe on the rules without mentioning in the disqualificationareconsideredasviolations.

10.RULESCONCERNINGDISQUALIFICATION Ateamwillbedisqualifiedifitcommitsanyofthefollowingactionsduringthematch: 10.1 The team damages or tries to damage the field, facilities, equipments or opponentsrobots. 10.2 Theteamperformsanyactsthatarenotinthespiritoffairplay. 10.3 Theteamfailstoobeyinstructionsorwarningsissuedbythereferees. 10.4 Theteamhasmadeafalsestartforthreetimesinthesamematch. 10.5 Overweightrobot(s). 10.6 Operationoverthepermissiblemaximumvoltage. 10.7 10.8 11.MISCELLANEAOUSGUIDELINES 11.1 Each participating University/Institute in the contest can be represented by multipleteams. 11.2 Ateamconsistsofnomorethanfivestudentsforasinglerobotwhoallbelong to the same university/institute. Only two students of theteam areentitled to Repetitionofsameviolationthreetimesinamatch. Oversizedrobot(s).

Participation by PostGraduates (PG) are allowed only in special category. Please contact the Chief Organizer in that regard. 11.4 Teamscanacquirefundingfromanyorganizationtohelpthemdesignbetterand sophisticatedsystems. 11.5 Submission of cost incurred on the robots manufacturing and control is mandatory.Allthefundingsourceshavetobedisclosedtothejudges. 11.6 AllthequeriesregardingRules&Regulationsofthecontestaretobeaddressed toraheel@case.edu.pkoralisyed@case.edu.pk. 11.7 All the updates to this Rule Book will be published in FAQ updates and will be postedonwww.case.edu.pk/robosprint/robosprint2012.aspx 11.8 The legitimacy of any actions not provided in this rule book will be subject to discretionoftheJudgesPanelwhichwillberandomlyselectedfromaNational BoardcomprisingofleadingprofessorsfromuniversitiesalloverPakistan. 11.9 Thedimensions,weights,etc.ofthefield,facilitiesandequipmentsdescribedin this rule book have a margin of error of plus or minus 5% unless otherwise stated.Howeverthedimensionsandweightsoftherobotsasshownintherule bookarethemaximumandanyviolationscannotbetolerated.

13.NATIONALSTUDENTCOORDINATIONPROGRAM CASEhasalsoinitiatedaStudentCoordinationPrograminwhicheachregisteredteam will be assigned a Team Guide from CASE Robotics Group (CRG). The purpose of assigning a Team Guide is to facilitate design, fabrication and control processes by guidingtheparticipatingteamsfromalloverPakistan.TeamGuideassignedtooneof theteamscanbeafulltimefacultymemberofCASE,agraduatestudentorafinalyear studentwhohasworkedinABUROBOCONandothernationalroboticsprojectsinthe past. He/She will be responsible to guide a particular team registered for RoboSprint 2012.Theguidancewillincludereviewofdesigns,suggestionsonelectronic/mechanical design, trouble shooting, selection of appropriate sensors and power bridges, contest rules confusions and queries, visit to practice field, trial runs at practice field, accommodation and logistics during the contest, etc. All the students who will prefer guidance from CASE during the course of their project should register themselves as earlieraspossiblesothatwecangiveyouthebestpossibleadviceinatimelymanner.

14.REQUESTINGASPECIALROBOTICSSEMINAR The vision of CASE is to promote robotics in Pakistan by helping teams from other universitiesdevelopthebestpossiblesystemsandcompeteonalevelplayingfield.The OrganizingTeamofRoboSprint2012iswillingtoextendasmuchhelpaspossibleinthis regard.AregisteredteamcanrequesttheirrespectiveHeadOfDepartmentorDeanto write to us on an official letter head for conducting a Special Robotics Seminar. Our teamwillplanavisittotherespectiveuniversityandwillgiveanextendedsessiontoall the participating teams of that institute. The seminar will focus on problems faced by thestudentsduringthedesignprocessincludingelectronicequipmentandmechanical structureoftherobot.Thiswillhelpbetterthedesignsandtroubleshootanyproblems faced thus far.
