GRADE 4 WORKSHEET: FRACTION

What is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It is written with two numbers, one above the other,

Parts of a Fraction

Numerator: The top number, which shows how many parts we have.
Denominator: The bottom number, which shows how many equal parts the whole is divided

Understanding Fractions with Visuals

Example 1: The Pizza

Imagine a pizza cut into 4 equal slices. If you eat 1 slice, you have eaten 4 of the pizza.

Example 2: The Chocolate Bar

A chocolate bar is divided into 8 equal pieces. If you eat 3 pieces, you have eaten 4 of the
chocolate bar.

Why Do We Need Fractions?

Fractions are useful in everyday life! We use fractions when we:

• Share things equally, like dividing a cake or a pizza.


• Measure ingredients while cooking.
• Tell time (like when we say "a quarter past the hour")

Comparing Fractions

We can compare fractions to see which is larger or smaller.

is bigger than because when a whole is divided into fewer parts, each part is bigger.

Equivalent Fractions

Sometimes different fractions can represent the same amount.
