CLAUSTRA BLOCKS
6. 13 Soakaways
Soakaways are to consist of suitably sized drainage pits dug at positions to be approved by the
Engineer.
The pits are to be taken to a sufficient depth to ensure dissipation of the effluent into the strata
concerned and are to be filled with rubble or broken rock such that the volume of voids remaining is
sufficient to receive the anticipated discharges.
These pits are to be blinded over at ground level with broken rock to match the remainder of the
surfacing.
6. 14 Septic Tanks
Septic tanks shall be of a design suitable for the maintenance free disposal of soil drainage. The
effluent is to consistently be of an acceptable purity, and is to be discharged into an appropriately
positioned soakaway. Facilities are to be incorporated to enable periodic sampling of the effluent for
testing, and the whole of the installation is to be to the approval of the Engineer.
Cast iron manhole covers, road gulley gratings and frames shall comply with an appropriate
National Standard approved by the Engineer, and shall be obtained from approved manufacturers
and shall be supplied coated in accordance with the appropriate National Standards unless otherwise
directed.
6. 16 Steps- irons
Step-Irons, which shall comply with an appropriate approved National Standard, shall be built into
the walls of manholes, chambers and the like in a manner approved by the Engineer.
In brickwork or in-situ concrete walls the step-irons shall be built in as the work proceeds. In the
case of manholes constructed with precast concrete rings step-irons shall be inserted into the rings
by the manufacturers and shall be positioned as required.
Provision shall be made for rodding all pipelines. For this purpose manholes for burried pipelines
shall be not greater than 100 metres apart. Pipelines above ground level shall have access plates on
each bend or junction. Each rain water down pipe is to have an access plate 750 mm above ground.
The bottom of every trench shall be carefully levelled and rammed. Where it is necessary to change
level, the bottom of the trench shall rise or fall gradually as the Engineer may direct, but in no case
at a slope greater than that given by the specified permissible deflections at joints. A minimum
cover of 1 metre shall be provided.
