INTRODUCTION
This guide is intended to help identify engine faults. Once the fault has
been identified, this guide will help determine the cause of the fault or
determine that the fault requires extensive troubleshooting.
Please note this guide is intended for reference and should be
used only as a supplement to the FAA approved Fault Isolation
Manual (CSP34064).

5
1.0 ENGINE STARTING FAULTS

1.1 Identifying the Start Fault

1. Did the engine rotation (N2 RPM) reach 28% prior to the
fuel being introduced?
Yes ► Go to Step 2.
No ► Troubleshoot the aircraft bleed system (Ref. TASK 72-00-
00-810-803-A, Rolls-Royce FIM) for the following
possible faults:
• Low APU RPM.
• APU Anti-surge Valve malfunction.
• Air Turbine Starter malfunction.
• Starter Control Valve malfunction.
• Bleed System Leaks.
• Ground Cart malfunction (if applicable).
• Start Bottle Low Pressure.
2. Did the ITT increase by a minimum of 14°C during the start?
Yes ► Go to Step 3.
No ► Go to the Engine Does Not Start (No Lightoff) fault
(Section 1.2).
3. Did the ITT go above 800 °C during the start?
Yes ► Complete the over temperature inspection of the ITT
(Ref. TASK 77-00-00-200-801 and
TASK 72-00-00-810-801, Rolls-Royce FIM).
No ► Go to Step 4.
4. Were flames seen in the exhaust section during the start?
Yes ► Go to the Hot Start / Torching on Start Fault
(Section 1.3).
No ► Go to Step 5.
5. Is the engine slow to reach idle (63% N2 RPM) or did the engine fail
to reach idle?
Yes ► Go to the Stagnated (Hung) Start fault (Section 1.4).
No ► Go to the Engine Does Not Start (No Lightoff)
fault (Section 1.2).
1.2 Engine Does Not Start (No Lightoff)
Description: ITT does not increase within ten seconds
after fuel flow is introduced.
Ref. TASK 72-00-00-810-803, Rolls-Royce FIM (TASK 72-00-00-
810-803-A01 for Piloted fuel nozzles and TASK 72-00-00-810-803-
R A02 Non-Piloted fuel nozzles, Rolls-Royce FIM).
1. Do an engine start (Ref. TASK 72-00-00-860-801, Rolls-Royce MM).
Monitor N2 RPM, fuel flow rate, and ITT during the start.

6
a) Was the fuel flow rate between 315 pph and 350 pph at the end
of the start attempt?
Yes ► Go to Step 2.
No ► Troubleshoot the FPMU (Ref. TASK 73-21-00-810-815,
Rolls-Royce FIM).
CAUTION: Dry motor the engine for a minimum of 30 seconds
to remove uncombusted fuel between starts. (Ref.
AE 3007A Series Operations Manual, CSP 30017)
2. Complete minimum of two engine starts with the ignition switch in
the AUTO position.
(Ref. TASK 72-00-00-810-803-A01, Rolls-Royce FIM for Piloted fuel
nozzles and TASK 72-00-00-810-803-A02, Rolls-Royce FIM for
Non-Piloted fuel nozzles).
Note: The FADECs (A and B) will alternate control of the start
attempts with the ignition switch in the AUTO position. Only one
ignition system A or B will be operational for engine starts on the
ground.
a) Does the no Lightoff condition continuously occur with only one
ignition system in control?
Yes ► Check the harness connections to the exciter, FPMU,
and FADEC of the ignition system with the fault. If the
connections check good replace the igniter and/or swap
the exciters.
Ref. TASK 72-00-00-810-803, Rolls- Royce FIM.

Note: The FADEC is unlikely to be the cause of a No

Lightoff condition.
No ► Go to TASK 72-00-00-810-803, Rolls-Royce FIM.
Note: Fuel nozzles are a possible cause of this
fault condition.

1.3 Hot Start / Torching on Start

Description: A hot start is when the ITT is above the temperature
usually seen during the engine starts, or is above
800°C. A torch start is when a flame is seen in the
exhaust during an engine start.
(Ref. TASK 72-00-00-810-803-A01, Rolls-Royce FIM for Piloted fuel
nozzles and TASK 72-00-00-810-803-A02, Rolls-Royce FIM for
Non-Piloted fuel nozzles). Do an engine start (Ref. TASK 72-00-00-
860-801, Rolls-Royce MM). Monitor N2 RPM, fuel flow rate, and ITT
during the start.
a) Did a stagnated (hung) start also occur?

7
Note: A stagnated hung start is when the engine has a
successful lightoff but is slow to reach idle (63% N2 RPM
or it does not reach idle at all).
Yes ► Go to the Stagnated (hung) Start fault (Section 1.4).
No ► Go to Step 2.
2. Complete minimum of two engine starts with the ignition switch in
the AUTO position.
(Ref. TASK 72-00-00-810-803-A01, Rolls-Royce FIM for Piloted fuel
nozzles and TASK 72-00-00-810-803-A02, Rolls-Royce FIM for
Non-Piloted fuel nozzles).
Note: The FADECs (A and B) will alternate control of start attempts
with the ignition switch in the AUTO position. Each FADEC uses its
own exciter and igniter to start the engine on the ground.
a) Does the hot start/torching on start condition only occur with the
same FADEC in control?
Yes ► Check the harness connections to the exciter, FPMU,
and FADEC of the ignition system with the fault. If the
connections check good, replace the igniter and/or swap
the exciters. If the fault continues, go to TASK 72-00-00-
810-801, Rolls-Royce FIM.
Note: A FADEC is unlikely to be the cause of this fault
condition.

9.0 DEBRIS INSPECTION

9.1 Magnetic Drain Plug

R When you remove a magnetic drain plug, magnetic chip collector
plug, or magnetic indicating plug (plug, mag plug, or MCD) and
there is debris on the plug, compare the debris with the photos
in Fig. 19 thru Fig. 27 to identify the classification of debris.
To positively identify what type of material, and which engine
component the debris is from will require a metallurgical laboratory
analysis.

Rolls-Royce FIM.
R Inspection of the Magnetic Plugs for Particles: Ref. TASK 79-30-00-
200-801, Rolls-Royce MM.
R If the quantity of chips or flakes covers the entire circumference of
the plug and is more than 0.200 inches (5.08 mm) in depth, remove
the engine (Ref. TASK 79-30-00-200-801, Rolls-Royce MM).
