Honor Statement. It is a departmental policy that any remote evaluation should

contain the following statement. This statement must be signed by the student. If it is
not signed, the evaluation should be given a failing grade.

I assert, on my honor, that I have not received assistance of any kind from any other
person while working on the final and that I have not used any non-permitted materials or
technologies during the period of this evaluation.

Problem 1. 10pts.
For every a ≥ 0, define
xa cos(x−2 ) x > 0

fa (x) =
0 x=0

i) (5 points) Determine the set

E = {a ∈ [0, ∞) : fa is differentiable at x = 0}.

For each a ∈ E, find fa0 (x) for every x ∈ [0, ∞).

ii) (5 points) Determine the set

D = {a ∈ E : fa0 is continuous at x = 0}.

Problem 2. 8pts.
Let E ⊂ R2 be a compact set. Define f : E → R by

f (x, y) = x2 + cos2 (exy ).

Prove that there exists M ∈ (0, ∞) such that for every (x, y) ∈ E we have M ≤ f (x, y).
Problem 3. 10pts.
Let (X, d) be a metric space and U be a connected subset of X.

i) (5 points) Let f : X → R be a continuous function. Assuming that 0 ∈

/ f (U ), prove
that f (x)f (y) > 0 for all x, y ∈ U .

ii) (5 points) Prove that if A ⊂ X and neither U ∩ A, nor U ∩ (X \ A) is empty, then

U ∩ ∂A 6= ∅.
Problem 4. 11pts.
Let X = {f : N → {0, 1}} denote the space of sequences with values in {0, 1}.
On X we define X
d(f, g) = 2−n |f (n) − g(n)|.
n∈N

i) (3 points) Show that d is a metric on X.

ii) (8 points) Show that the space (X, d) is compact.

Problem 5. 10pts.
Determine whether the set
XN
A={ cn x2n : N ∈ N, cn ∈ R}
n=0

is dense in:

i) C([0, 1], R).

ii) C([−1, 1], R).

Prove your answer!

Problem 6. 8pts.
Let (X, dX ), (Y, dY ) and (Z, dZ ) be three metric spaces such that Y is compact. Let
f : X → Y and g : Y → Z be two functions such that g is continuous and injective.
Show that if g ◦ f is uniformly continuous then f is uniformly continuous.
Problem 7. 13pts.
P∞
i) (6 points) Determine the set E = {x ∈ R : n=1 n2 cosn (x) < ∞}.

P∞
ii) (7 points) For every x ∈ E, calculate f (x) = n=1 n2 cosn (x).
Problem 8. 10pts.
R1
Let f, g ∈ C(R/Z, C), and en (x) := e2πinx . Recall the inner product hf, gi := 0
f (x)g(x)dx.

i) (5 points) Assume f is orthogonal to every en , i.e hf, en i = 0 for every n ∈ Z. Show that
f = 0.

ii) (5 points) Suppose that fk is a sequence of functions in C(R/Z, C) such that

Z 1
