Why do we need to know
The history of
Chemical engineering???
Late 19th Century

Chemical engineering begins

to emerge as a distinct disci-
pline with the growth of
industries such as petroleum
refining, fertilizer production
and chemical manufacturing.
In the year 1887
The first chemical engineering
curriculum is established at
the Massachusettes Institute
of technology (MIT) in the
united states.

The first chemical engineer is George E.Davis.

Early 20th Century

Chemical engineering expands

rapidly with the development
of unit operations principles,
which involve the separation,
conversion,and transport
of materials in chemical
processes.
1915-1930
The American Institute of Chemical
Engineers(AIChE) is
founded to promote the advance-
ment of chemical engineering as a
profession

The field experiences significant

growth,particularly in areas such
as industrial catalysis,polymer
science,and process optimization.
World War II
Chemical engineers
play crucial roles in
the production of
synthetic rubber,
explosives,and
other materials
vital to the war
effort.
Post-World War II

The field continues to

expand rapidly,with
developments in areas
such as petrochemicals,
plastics,pharmaceuticals,
And environmental
engineering.
Late 20th Century
Chemical engineering
Becomes increasingly
interdisciplinary,
incorporating principles
from chemistry,physics,
biology,and materials science.
21st Century
Chemical engineers contri-
bute to advancements in
renewabl energy,nano-
technology,biotechnology,
sustainable manufacturing,
and other emerging fields.
Innovations of

In Food Industries:

New techniques that protect food against spoilage.

Enhancing the taste of food.

Discovery of fertilizers and herbicides.

Advanced food processing techniques.

Pasteurization

Technological milestones
Aseptic Packaging:
The process by which
microorganisms are
prevented from entering a
package during and after
packaging
Nanotechnology

Information and communication sector.

Energy and medical technology.

Paper batteries.

Carbon nanotubes.

Drug delivery

Water treatment

Sensors
Nanozymes:

Nanozymes are the nano
materials with enzyme
like charecteristics.

These can specifically
catalyze substrates of
natural enzymes under
physiological condition
with simlar catalytic mechanism and kinetics
Advantages of Nanozymes

High catalytic activity.

Low cost.

High stability.

Easy mass production
Applications of Nanozymes

Employed in biomedicine through the detection of targets such as
small biomalecules

Metal ions

Cancer cells
Advantages of Nanomaterials

With Nanotechnology we can create unique
materials and products which are stronger,
lighter,cheaper,durable and precise.

Industrial computers which made with nanomaterials can
become a billion time faster and a millions time slower.

Automatic pollution cleanup.

Manufacturing at very low cost or no cost.

Body sculpturing-changing of our appearance.
Disadvantages of Nanomaterials

Health and safety issues:Nano particles can cause serious
illness or damage to human body.carbon Nanotubes could
cause infection of lungs.

Mass production in food and consumables, oil and Diamonds
could become worthless.

Loss of jobs in manufacturing and farming etc.

Atomic weapons could be more accessible and destructive.

Creates social strife through increasing wealth gap.

Nano pollution is created by toxic waste.
Health & Architecture
Modern homes:
Chemical engineers typically focus on processes
related to chemical reactions materials and energy, they do
contribute indirectly to the development of modern homes
through their work in areas such as building
materials,sustainability,energy efficiency and
environmental impact mitigation.
Paint that kills bacteria:
Anbacterial paintings is an innovative
coating that kills 99.9% of bacteria and some
viruses on the painted surface within two hours of
exposure
copper containing biphasic glass-ceramic material
it calls Guardiant uses in this latex paints called
Copper Armor.
Self healing materials

Self-healing polymers are
synthetically created ‘smart
materials’ which have the
built-in ability to automati-
cally repair damage to
themselves without any
external diagnosis.
Damage and Repair cycle

Reactive end groups can be free

Radicals and/or -C=C -,-COOH,
NH2,-OH,-si-O,SH/S-S,or -C=O
Shape Memory Assisted SelfHealing

Materials capable of recovering from a temporary
shape(switching phase) to a memorized permanent shape (stable
network phase) when triggered by external stimuli.

The transition fixes the cracks and damage to change original
shape.

These include Carbon-Nanoparticles,Metal oxide nanoparticles
etc.
Applications of Self Healing
Materials

Medical dental/ Artificial body replacements

Aero/space

Military

Paint/Coatings
Cosmetics

Improving make up products.

Developing sustainable practices and eco-friendly
formulations

Renewable resources in beauty product
formulations.

Implementing energy-energy efficient processes.
Sandal wood oil:

Producing sandal wood oil without sandal wood in an
industrial scale with same flavor and fragrance.

Traditional Sandalwood oil contains Alpha santalol &
beta santalol

A Sandalwood tree nearly takes 15 to 30 years to
become richer in oil.

But demand has grown faster than the trees.

Instead of relying on stressed and seasonal
sandalwood trees,BASF ferments its product from
cornstarch-derived sugars using Rhodobacter
sphaeroids.
Waste management

Carbon capture

Soil remediation

Removal of toxic contaminants

Waste water treatment

Oil spill clean up
