I bow MahaGanapathy and l feel Ecstasy and extremely
happy to say that I have fulfilled the yearning and burning
desire of my beloved Father Sri. S. V. Viswanthan BA.
BT to write about the 'Greatness of Maandi' according to
Astrology during his life time.
Infact neither any astrologer considers efficacy nor to
predict propriety of the planet Maandi (Titan) especially in
Tamil Nadu. Of course there are very few editions referred
to Maandi but contain very little knowledge about it and
also use few reference books available relating to" Gulikathi
Five". l find methodology of denoting the Maandi in the
horoscopes concern is from time of Sunrise and vary in
accordance with length of the day or night as explained by
my father with reference to ancient books.
l wish to honour my beloved father as he was very
learned Guru, who guided and enthuse me to write about
astrological books like this one. Though he had enormous
moveable and immoveable properties in abundance but
lost all due to his participation and thirst in the freedom
movement as he belonged to freedom fighter family.
According to saying that 'Art is long and life is short
- knowledge is power. He was a graduate early in 1945.
According to the advice of former chief minister Shri. K.
Kamaraj in 1955, he joined as single school teacher on
1/10/1955 at a village namely Mithilai near Karaikudi in
Tamil Nadu.
As he was in a good book of all people especially
the intimacy with one well-known philanthropist Shri.
N. PL.CT.M. Nallakaruppan chettiyar alias sivalingam
chettiyar, took initiative and efforts to build a primary
school building in the name of chettiyar' s first wife. As the
rules did not permit the individual name to be named to

the school building my father and chettiyar approached
directly the chief minister Shri. K. Kamaraj and obtained
permission to name the school as 'Meenakshi Sivalingam
District Board Elementary School'. Accommodation for
the mid-day meals was also constructed by the chettiyar
from his own funds. My father served as teacher in that
elementary school and upgraded it. After completing his
BT course he joined as teacher and then head-master in
neighbour village. He dedicated his sincere services and
upgraded the high school as NO. I District School.
After his retirement he devoted his valuable time for
the people who approached regarding astrology, casting
and matching of horoscopes to their fullest satisfaction as
he had already gained experience in that field by his fore-
fathers hereditary from childhood. I have given elaborate
illustrations about the opinions rendered by the eminent
people in the astrological field from the basic and authen-
ticated books for enlightenment of the readers as well as to
the astrologers to determine the placement of Maandi to
the lucidity and predict the results accordingly.
My joy knows no bounds in publishing this book in sweet
memory of my revered father as well as Great Guru.
I wish my disciple Ambalur Sri G. Nagarajan who is
eminent in Astrology, writer of Astrological subject in
Tamil News Paper, follower of my principles in astrology

survey and land records of Tamil N adu Government, son
ofShri.S.V.Viswanatha iyer, BA, B.T, retired Head master
is very good astrologer/Predictor such as his forefather.

as well as connected with the freedom movement by his

Shri V.Venkatrarnan is well trained, well versed, well
experienced and his predictions are very accurate as said

He served in various categories in the survey department

1 MAANDI: A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH
Maandi (Gulika) is otherwise called as Titan, which has a
diameter of 3000 miles in length. Every planet has certain
sub-planet like moon to the sub-planet of Earth. Mars has
two sub-planets Jupiter has 12, Saturn has 10, Uranus has 5
and Neptune has 2 sub-planets. Among the lO Sub-planets
of Saturn MAANDI (Gulika) called as TIT AN is the biggest
one. Our Saints and Sages defined the sub-planets as the
sons of the respective planets, so MAANDI is considered
as the son of Saturn.
Nowadays in the modern world western countries are
interested in the space research. Among those America and
Russia are leading in this field. Our country also launched
several satellites and succeeded with good results. American
Astronauts succeeded in reaching the moon. Recently
it ventured to send a satellite by name 'Path finder' and
gathered enormous informations and photographs. In 1992
America launched a satellite to Sun for research and got
the photographs. They found the whole universe is under
the Sun's rays. But the Earth and the Maandi (TITAN)
are under infra-Blue rays. Other planets are in complete
darkness. From this they concluded that Maandi (TITAN)
rays have powerful rays than the Sun and other planets
over the Earth.
So America planned to launch a satellite to Maandi
(TITAN) for research. A belief as also among them,
those men from Sun keeping Maandi as a base revolving
the Earth in their flying saucers but also got proof. Our
universe contains 98% helium and some Hydrogen and
also Oxygen and other carbon- di-oxide likewise they
believe that Maandi might have Amino acids and Affirm
that gases necessarily required for livelihood. There can be
no living being as it has Infra red rays (Death rays) but
there is possibility of living being in the Maandi (TITAN)
and it has Infra-Blue rays also.
Maandi (Titan) Astronomical Findings
The first Dutch Scientist Christian, 'Hugens' found the Titan
(Maandi) as the one of the biggest sub-planet of Saturn
among 21 in 1655 A.D. It's 1222 Thousand Kilo Meter
far away from the Saturn and revolving in the clockwise
direction. It belongs to Sun's family, second place among
the moon's and its diameter is 5150 KM. In 1977 America's
satellite Pioneer II Discovered a new circle and sub- planets
(Upa-Grahas) in the Saturn, but not known as Titan. Then
in November 1980 a satellite voyage-! flown near 400 KM
found the Titan through its Infra-red rays and it sent much
information. During that time there was no water in the
planet. However they believed that in future living being
may find place there (Exist).
To find the possibility European space agency under

NASA base jointly ventured a plan to send a satellite soon.
In 19th century one Itlay scientist 'Gian Dominica Cassani'
found the darkest places in-between four moons of Saturn
and Saturn circles.
So in April 1996 an Airship 'Cassani' was lauched.
ln 1997 in its path, it found that 66 maja namely asteroid
and at end of 1999 it crossed Jupiter. The above Airship
in 2002 approached the Titan away from 1000 kilometers
and revolved 30 times and carried many experiments.
During that time it landed at a speed of 266 KM per second
carried out researches from the Parachutes expelled from
the Airships. Then many secrets of the Titan are come to
known. This Excellent and important project is named as
'Horizon 2000' .In future the details about Maandi may be
known to all
Saturn-Scientific Findings
Saturn is big planet next to Jupiter, in the ecliptic Circle of
the Sun. America launched a satellite such as Marina-11,
Marina-12 and Pioneer-11 to Saturn for research and found
that it has 10 sub-planets. The Saturn is 142.7crore KM
away from the Sun and its diameter is 11200 KM.This is
also a Gasious Planets similar to Jupiter. It takes 10 Hours
16 Mins to revolve itself by reckoning from the White dot
and the Mist of Saturn. While doing so this White dot
discovered by 'Will Hay' and this dot take the period of
29. 4 Years to revolve the Sun and it is covered by thick
clouds. So it was not possible to do research about the
same at that time. There are Hydrogen, Helium, Methane
and Ammonium acids in the wind. There are 4 circular
rings encircling the Saturn and believe one more circular
ring (S'h) in it. Most of them are small sub-planets in 1000,
small or big Meteors iron pieces, stones Etc. The total width
may be 274000 KM. These circles contain brightening ice
pieces. Saturn has 1000 small planets and it has nine big
sub-planets similar to earth and moon. Titan is the one the
biggest sub-planet. Its 9th sub-planet is called as 'POPE'
and it revolves in the anti-clockwise direction. Its I 0TH sub-
planet is named as 'JOHNUS'. Its photo was taken in the
year 1967. Other Seven Sub-planets are Ria, Diyoni, Jepitus,
Thethis, Ensoladus, Mimoss and Hyberian.
According to the latest findings there are 21 sub-planets

for Saturn. Only one planet namely TITAN is revolving in
Clock-wise direction and other sub-planets in the Anti-
Clockwise direction.

2 ASTROLOGY - PROPOUNDED BY INDIAN
RISHIS
Every man wants to know his fortune, misfortune, family
life and without mental worries, financial troubles, etc.,
which are all common in human life. Everybody is facing
unexpected problems in his life.
Fortune related with "Good Yogas" and misfortune
falls under "ARISHTA YOGAS". "Good Yogas"" give
success, attaining the power, good health, gains in finance,
higher education, peaceful family life, sathputras, (Dutiful,
kind hearted children) enjoying religious rites. Ava Yoga's
or Arishta Yogas bring quarrel sum wife, worries, miseries,
ill health, poverty, mental disorder, hateful relations and
children, acci~.ents, physically handicapped, etc.,
Hinduism based on Vedas and the Astrology is a part

Starts, etc ...
The Author N.Narasinga Rao regarding the Date of
Sri.Rama had elaborately narrated the date-war important
events with reference to Valmiki Ramayana.

To determine the exact date of birth of Sri Rama the
author had given the evidences as follows:
Sri Rama's avatar was earlier than that of Sri Krishna.
Sri Krishna was born in 3200 B.C. Ikshavaku Dynasty
Terminated in Kaliyuga.There were 59 Kings, ruled after
Sri Rama. After Sri Rama starting froma reputed kingKusa
Ikshavaku Dynasty ended with Sumithra in Kaliyuga.
To emphasize his view point stating that "by 4300 B.C
Sri Rama should have ruled. A search between 4300-4500
B.C would have been sufficient yet in order not to miss any
possibility of a date before 4300 B.C it was thought that
a scrutiny between 3500-4700 B.C woul.d be more more
Exhaustive and investigative".

For Investigation the author had followed various methods:
1. Common Calculation (as described above).
2. Solar new year for the earlier period.
3. Development of method of calculations of Longitude
and latitude.
4. By Ayanamsa.
5. Calculation of Longitude and Latitude of planets at
the time of the birth of Sri Rama.
Another view point has been offered by author, doctor
sathya pal singh, commissioner of police, nagpur to
hitavada a newspaper at nagpur dated 12.04.2008.
He had his opinion that according to ancient Indian
chronological order and Puranic Tradition Sriram was
born in the 24th Treta yuga (Great Age) .Apart from Valmiki
Ramayana, and other versions of Sri Ram's Biography,
there are 4 important references to Sri Ram, Ravana Etc in
ancient Scriptures i.e, in Vayupurana sloka 70-88.

On the basis of the slokas mentioned in the abovt;
4 puranas, it can be presumed that Sri Rama, Ravana,
Vishwamithra, etc., lived in the 24th TRETHA Yuga
According to Mahabharatha Sri Rama lived in the
transition face between TRETHA and DW APARA Ages.
We are presently in the Kaliyug of the 28th of the
ChaturYugi and so far 5108 years of kaliyug have elapsed.
One Chatur Yuga-4 Yuga (34320000)
One Kali Yuga - 432000
Dwapara Yuga - 864000

Tretha Yuga - 1296(XX)
ChatYuga - 1728(ID
lf we accept that Ram indeed lived during these past
phase of his 24th Tretha yuga then it can be calculated that
he lived 18149108 years ago, but if we accept that he had
been lived in Tretha yuga of present 28th cycle of Kaluyugi
(Chatur) then he should have been lived 869108 years ago.
Regarding the period of Sri Rama he has given one more
view point based on Planetarium Gold Software which is
generally used by Scientists to measure the distance and
locations of planets from earth and predict the Lunar and
solar eclipses. According to this, Sri Rama was born on the
1QthJan5114B.C.
This view is rejected by author Satya pal and for
rejection he gives futher explanations. According to
astornomy the positions of Zodiac constellations come
back to their original place after a cycle of 24320 years. Sri
Rama should have been born in of the repetitive planetary
positions. From this article written by DRSatya pal singh
we can come to conclusion that SriRama should have been
born before 26m) years or any of these repetitive cycles in
planetary positions.
However there are differences of opinion among the
authors.
Mr.Narasinga Rao has pointed out that Sri Rama had
born on 11/02/4433 B.C 10 hours 47 mins,"48 sec LMT
Ayanamsa 19 degree 57 minute 54 second or 19.965
degree.
We cannot·refute that methodology calculation which
is elaborately explained with concrete proofs in 300 pages
by Mr.Narasinga Rao. His Astronomical Calculations
for the back period are most important one. Based on
the methodology adopted by Engineer Narasinga Rao
astrologers can find the back period of Horoscope even

if it is pre dated and in palm leaves. One sailent point
given by Satya Pal Singh is construed as more efficacy and
paramountcy and relavant one.
Mr.N P .Ramadurai's version as follows (Astromomer
Tanjore Dt. Tamil Nadu)
There is one more important version repeating and
coinciding of the Almanac. After 12160 years the planet
position in Almanac will be one and the same. Mr.
Ramadurai has proved this by calculating the present
positions. By considering the above facts, the birth of Sri
Rama should have been born prior to 28000 years.
Mr.Narasinga Rao definition B.C 4433
Sataya Pal Singh definition prior to 26000 years
Ramadurai definition - planets position one and the same
after 12160 then 2 x 12160 =24320
Conclusion:
Sri Rama's birth time may be 24320 + 4433 = 28753 Years
B.C
Vedic period is also determined as prior to 15000 years
B.C to 30000 years B.C.Vedic period and birth of Sri Rama
coincides with that of 28753 years. Astrology is part of Veda
so that we can easily determine and conclude that Puranic
Era Astrology w'as propounded by Indian Rishis and Saints
prior to 28000 years and spread all over the world.

Region Years. According to some
text 3500 B.C to 4000 B.C.
So we can come to a conclusion that origin of Astronomy
Science of Stars, and Astrology were ancient one and first
propounded to the world only by Indian Rishis.

3 IMPORTANCE OF HINDU DHARMA
Religious faith of HINDU DHARMA is worshipping the

God as family. Only in our religious faith country, this
kind of fact is followed; Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi
are located in the temple in the main Sanctum Sanctorum,
MahaVishnu, Krishna, Pandurenga, Muruga, Brahma,
NavaGrahas are in some other Sanctum Sanctorum with
their wives, to explain the term "A Good Family as a
"Temple"
All worships and spiritual practices are performed
towards attaining the spiritual goal namely manifestation
of Divinity in every one of us. Besides these facts we are
giving much respect to the manifestation of beast and birds
also by worshiping them in the forms of V ahanas to the
Gods, Goddess and other deities.

Even though, we are praying in the temple, some
religious rights are also performed by us. That is our culture.
So as to satisfy the sprits of the ancestors, Hindu Religious
ceremonies are performed on the every anniversary day
of the death of the ancestors. In olden days there was
no calendar, only after Christ, the calendar system was
introduced. When the printing technology developed, all
over the world, the common date and year contains all the
details were printed in the form of calendar and the usage
of calendar spread to many people.
Before that the ceremony of the fore fathers were
performed on the death day of Thithi. The Thithi which is
one of the five parts of Almanac can be easily identified. The
ceremony was performed in the particular month (Mesha
to Pices) and in particular Sukla Paksha or Krishna Paksha
Thithi. This was the simple system which can be easily
accepted by all. This method is being continued from Veda
Period to till date. Apart from Siva, Vishnu temples, there
are many temples for village deities, Poojas and other form
Of worshiping such as yearly festivals are also followed in
this temples. These village deities are two types
1. One type is offerings rice only
2. Another type sacrificing the animals such as Goat,
Cock, etc ... to that DEITY.
These village deities are generally named as Sapta
Virgin, Durga, God Virabadra, God Arhat, etc ... in some
places it is located as a small stone under the tree, one
spear or a trident with roof or without roof. For these
village deities also there are narratives how it was formed.
ln olden days the unmarried virgins' conjugal chastity
were destroyed by the noble man or men. Then they would
have scarified their life either by suicide or by killing. The
warriors who were killed in battle and sacrificed their life
for the kingdom were also worshipped.

The above detailed introduction is necessary as the
Maandi is considered to the departed sprits of unnatural
death. The object of comparing the Maandi and departed
sprits is as the Maandi is linked with the souls ofbrother,
father and mother and also one of the main reasons of the
individual's death.
CJ. Raja MA., in his "Gochara Deepika" has noted as
follows:
Death of an individual is occurred in the Saturn's Dasa,
Bukthi, Andram, Sushmaor Prana periods only. Maandi is
considered to be the son of Saturn. So, we can understand
very easily that Maandi is also connected with Pretha and
offeringthe prayers to the ancestors will also satisfy Maandi.
The ancestor's death may be natural or unnatural.
We know pretty well only some upper class people and
some community people are performing ceremony to the
ancestors Scheduled caste and some most backward class
are not performing rites in the ancestors Thithi or in the day
of New moon. They rise to worship the deities of departed
sprits which are located in their hamlet itself. They are
worshiping the departed sprits daily. Sacrificed persons'
shapes were sculptured and praised. In this way worship
of deities for common people would have commenced.
Christians used to worship their ancestors ina particular
day in the grave-yard where their ancestors had Tombed
and performed ceremony in the grave-yard itself. That day
is being called as "All Souls Day". All the Christians are
assembling on that day in the graveyard and paying their
tributes to their ancestors in the grave by garlanding it and
offering prayers.
Like this, Muslims are also offeringprayers everyday in
the Tomb of a Muslim saint everyday. That grave-yard is
called "Darha". So as to get rid of the evil spirits, the Guru
of the Darha (called as Huzrath) enchants the Huzrath
Mantras. Hindu Religion is equivalent to a big banyan

tree. The branches of that banyan tree are other Religions,
because for every religion there are periods.

But for the Hindu Religion, there is no particular
period. As already explained the Veda period is being cal-
culated as 13,(XX) B.C to 30,000 B.C. so it is called as antigu-
ity. Therefore the culture followed by the Hindus would
have been continued by other religion. ·

The distance between the Sun and Saturn is calculated as

148.8 Crore Kilometer. Saturn will take 29.5 years to round
the Sun. The weight of the Saturn is 100 times the Earth even
though it is as big as 700 times. When comparing Saturn's
weight and Earth's weight, the weight is not proportionate
to its size. So the Saturn's weight is less than the weight of
the Earth.
Saturn was surrounded by Ammonia, Methene and
Hydrogen and this planet colour is dark-blue. There
are Nine Upa-Grahas to Saturn. Eight Upa-grahas are
revolving the Saturn in the anticlockwise direction and
only one upagraha is clockwise direction which is called
"TITAN". This Upa-Graha Titan is far away from the other
U pa-Grahas.
On 7th October 2001 Eclipse to Saturn happened. The
Eclipse time was 10.15 PM to 10.54 PM. This news was
published in Newspapers also. The Astro Research Centre
announced and published photo also with clear image. ln
that they pointed out that the Eclipse was also happened to
its Upa-Graha "TITAN". Called as Maandi.
Maandi - The Son of Saturn
There is one Puranic essay about the Maandi. In the epic
Ramayana, the Ravana used the Nine Planets as steps to
his Throne. The nine planets were placed falling flat facing
the ground and used to step up with his legs in the back
of the planets body. N aradha advised the Ravana to step
up in the chest, as the stepping up the back body was not a
wise thing to a brave man. Then Ravana turned the pl.anets
so as to face him and stepped up in their chest. When he
crossed the Saturn, Saturn looked at him. So Ravana lost his

strength. Then at the birth time oflndirajit (Son ofRavana),
Saturn created a magic pill Globule (Gulika) and given life
to magic pill and named as Gulika. That Gulika ruined the
Indirajit in future. This is one Purana story and one more
story is also in exist.
Sage Naradha created a war between Saturn and
Ravana. In this battle, Saturn was wounded and his blood
was bleeding. In that blood Maandi was re-animated.
However Maandi was created for destruction purpose, so
that he will give more ill effects than good effects.

5 NON-LUMINOUS PLANETS
Generally in TamilNadu, we are calculating only 9 planets.
There are nine Upa-Grahas and they are as follows:
1. Sun - Kala
2. Moon - Paridhi (PariVeda)
3. Mars - Dhuma (Mirityu)
4. Mercury - Ardhaprahara
5. Jupiter - Yamak:antak:a
6. Venus - Kodanda (Chapa- Indra Dhanus)

GULIKATill:
1. Maandi or Gulika: Son of Saturn, in Sarvartha
chinthamani, it is spelt as Maandi. As the Saturn has
slow motion, its one of the name is Mandan. Gulika

is the son of Saturn. So it is also called as Maandi.
In olden texts some sages have noted as Maandi,
some sages as Gulika and some one as Maandi
alias Gulika. Kavi Kalidasa has rightly pointed that
Maandi and Gulika are not one and the same (not
similar).
2. Yamakantaka: The son of Jupiter and it does not
have much more importance.
3. Ardhaprahara: The son of Mercury and it does not
have much more importance.
4. Kala: The son of Sun and it does not have much
more importance.
5. Mirityu: the son of mars
Dhumathi:
I. Dhuma or Mirityu : It is upagraha to Mars and it is
just like smoke. It is also called as "COMET"
2. Pata or Vyati pata : It is upagralia to Rahu and the
part of the stars. It bums with flame when entering
in the earth's gravity. This is called as "METEOR"
3. Pari veda or Paridhi: It is upagraha to Moon. During
the time of Full Moon there will be Halo around the
Moon. That is called as "PARIVEDA". Horoscopes
of the child born in this time wil not give accurate
predictions.
4. Indra Dhanus : In the morning or evening after the
rain or after rain drizzling, rainbow will appear on
the Sky. Sometimes there will be supplementary
rainbow will also seen. This is called as "INDRA
DHANUS" and also as Indra chapa.
5. Dumakethu: Upakethu

6 GENERAL FEATURES OF NON-LUMINOUS
PLANETS.
Gulika the Five: These sub-planets are generally will give

on! y ill effects:
I. Maandi or Gulika: Explained in this book
2. Yamakantaka: Sub Planet to Jupiter. The effects of
Yamakantaka will be against Maandi. If it is conjoined
with benefic planets, it will give good results and
malefic planets, harmful results.
3. Ardha Prahara: These are having only 50% effects
when compared to Maandi and not giving ill effects
such as Maandi.
4. Kala: These are having only 50% effects when compared
to Maandi and not giving ill effects such as Maandi
5. Mirityu: One of the sub planets to Mars.
Brhihat PARASARA HORA SASTRA explains the ill
effects of Gulka in Gulikathi five. So that we can come to
a conclusion that Gulika is only the most important sub
planet in GULIKATHI five. So that in all astrological text,
detailed effects of Maandi (Gulika) only explained. Other
·four Gulikathi effects are not given in detail.
Method of Calculating Gulikathi Five:
1. Maandi or Gulika: Explained under mentioned chapters.
2. Yamakantaka: For Day Birth at the end of 18, 14, 10, 6,
2, 26, 22Gatihas recknoning from Sunday respectively.
For night birth at the end of 2, 16, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6
Gatihas from Sunday respectively.
3. Ardhaprahara: For day birth at the end of Gathihas
14, 10, 6, 2, 26 and 22 from Wednesday. For Night
birth at the end of Gatihas from Saturday onwards.
4. Kala: For day birth from Sunday onw)!Jds at the end

8 CALCULATION OF MAANDI:
Many Sages, Rishis have mentioned the ill effects of

Maandi. Some of them noted as Maandi and some body
called as Gulika. "KALIDASA" in his Uttara Kalamrita
explained clearly that Maandi and Gulika were the two
sons of Saturn and not one and the same.
1. Maandi Udaya - Particular Time
2. Gulika Time - Duration of1Y2 Hours.
The exact time ofMaandi Udaya should be determined
according to under mentioned principles:
1. Duration of day (Sunrise to Sunset)
2. Duration of Night (Sunset to Sunrise)
3. Maandi Udaya Gatihas of week days. 26, 22, 18, 14,
10, 6, 2 from Sunday to Saturday respectively (for
Day Birth)
4. Maandi Udaya Gatihas of week days. 2, 6, 10, 14,
18,22, 26from Tuesday to Monday respectively (for
Night Birth)
5. Divide the duration of the day by 30 and multiple
the Maandi Udaya Gatihas for that day.
The result is the Maandi Udaya Time on that particular
day. ln the same method divide the duration of Night by
30 and multiple the Maandi Udaya Gatihas given for that
night birth. The result is the Maandi Udaya Time of Night.
Add the exact Night time with Sunset or Ahas, then the
Maandi time can be arrived for Night birth.
Gulika perod (duration) determination:
The period of particular day or night when divided by 8
will indicate the length of a part ruled over by each of the
Planets. First 7 parts are allotted to 7 Planets and the last

part given to Gulika. Order of seniority chosen for Gulika
period for Day time is from Saturn and Night time from
Mars.

day time and night time are equal. Then only this Gatihas
can be taken into consideration. Add the particular time of
Maandi Uaya fromSunrise and find the position ofMaandi
by following the same method adopted for finding Lagna.
Maandi Calculation - To Be Remembered:
1. Place of birth: Duration of day time should be found
out based on Sunrise to Sunset and for night birth,
it's the duration from Sunset to Sunrise.
2. Maandi Udaya time: For day birth, from Sunrise and
for night birth, from Sunset+ Night Udaya Time.

Prasna marga: Calculation of the Gulika 's Longtitude
In Prasna Marga, Maandi is called as Gulika in all places
except the chapter for calculating the Latitude of Gulika. In
Prasna Marga, it is found that Maandi rises at a particular
time and Gulika's position as a particular period.
Maandi:- From Sunday onwards for the day birth
Maandi rising Gatihas are at the end of 26, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6
and 2 Gatihas. During the night times, the Maandi will rise
at the end of 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 Gatihas reckoning
from Tuesday to Wedesday.
It should be ascertained on the basis of day time or
night time. If the length of the day is more or less than 30
Gatihas, this rising time will also vary. If the length of the
day is 31 Gatihas on Saturday, then the Maandi rising time
will 2 Gatihas and 4 Vinadis. For that day 29 Gathikas will
be the night duration. Maandi Udaya Common Gatihas for
that day is 14 Gatihas. Then the Maandi Udaya time will be
13 Gatihas and 32 Vinadis after Sunset.

9 MAANDI SPHUTA- SARVARTHA CHINTHAMANI
Maandi Sphuta is to be calculated by means of "Aha

Pramana" or the duration of the day time. Maandi rising
time in a week days are as follows"
Week days from Sunday to Saturday 26, 22, 18, 14,
10, 6 and 2 Gatihas respectively. The length of the day
time has to be divided by 30 and multiple it week day's
Maandi rising time. Then we can derive the exact position
of Maandi time. For finding out the Maandi sphuta for that
particular time, the same procedure for finding the Lagna
Sphuta should be followed: (Part-1 Sloka- 40)
Aha Pramana means duration of day time. AHA
means day and PRAMANA means duration ie., time
between Sunrise and Sunset. Generally duration of time
will vary from 30 Ghatihas. lt may be more or less 30
Ghatihas. Maandi Sphuta is calculated only on the basis
of "Ahaprarnana". First find out the duration of the day
time. The above Ghatihas given for that day for the rising
of Maandi should be multiplied and divided by 30. this
will be exact position ofMaandi Udaya. Calculate the Rasi
in which Maandi would rise.

methods are not explained in detail, but the effects of

11 MAANDI IN PULIPPANI JOTHIDAM
Pulippani Jothidam- 300 (Tamil Astrology Book)

This Astrology book was propounded by one Sage
named as "PULIPPANI", who was the prime disciple of
"BOKHAR". There were 18 persons who had acquired the
eight great mystic powers. They were also considered as
the class of De vas.
These Sages were efficient in preparing Siddha
medicines, art of transmutation of baser metals in to Gold
(i.e, iron rod or copper etc ... into Gold), flying in the Air,
capacity of controlling the planets. Besides all these items,
they themselves had the power to insert their soul into
another dead body.
Bohar created the statue of "Lord Muruga" in "Nava
Pashanam" and installed in Palani, one of the main
important Hill temple in Tamil Nadu. Pulippani was
the prime disciple of Bohar and he had composed nine
books in Tamil regarding, Siddha Medicines, Black Magic,
Mathematical calculations, and Astrology. Their particular
period of living cannot be seen in the books. Their period
of living was ancient one and said to have lived for three
thousand years. Pulippani assisted to his preceptor Bokhar,
to cr~ate the statue of Lord Muruga. Pulippani gatherd
Herbals for Nava Pashanam and he went to the forest by
riding the Tiger.
In Pulippani jothidam, 300 poems are found and there
are some poems about Maandi and it is explained in this
chapter.
Pulippani described as Maandi in some places and
Gulika in some other places. Only in one ·place, he called
the Maandi as "Gulika ahas Maandi, who is the son of
Saturn."

According to Pulippani, we have to consider that
the Maandi and Gulika are one and the same. The true
translation of Pulippani - 300, regarding Maandi is
explained in this chapter.
Gulika's Position (Poem 34)
0, my dear disciple! Whenever you are commencing to tell
the Astrology, you should learn one thing,Ifthe Maandi alias
Gulika, who is the son of Saturn, is in Lagna, that native will
have a good site and house, Plentiful wealth, Agriculture
lands and also he will be long lived.
If it is in second house, which is called as Dhana Bhava,
the native will be quarrel some causing defective eye or
visionary defect. At the same time, he will decay and
decline of wealth and get a name in the earth as "a Wicked
Man".
Gulika in Thiruthiya place which is also called as Third
place. You should understand and to tell that the native
will be quarrel-some nature with his brothers and friends.
At the same time he will be truthful and performing the
religious deeds.
Gulika in Fourth place makes the native to )eave from
his village and may reside in the hill areas for ~ometimes
which are not at all a fault of him. This was conveyed by·
Pulippani with the bestowed favour of Bohar.
Gulika, son of Saturn in Fifth place confers good moral.
He will be issueless. He will shine as a great warrior. He
knows the way of getting the victory over enemies, full of
grains, brave and wealthy.
This Gulika in Sixth place will make the native long
lived, philanthropy and brave. This can be decided
according to the planets strength.

Seventh place will make the native; loss of wealth through
his irregular activities, due to God Siva's anger suffers
danger of life (Critical period in life span.).
Just like that Gulika in Eight place will make the native
wicked by heart. He may also get critical position to his life
in water. This can be declared with my bestowed Bohars
favour and additionally I want to tell you that the native will
have ugly face.
If the Gulika occupies the 9'h house, the place of Charity,
the native will have fascinating face. He will be ingratitude
to his father, wicked one. He enjoys pleasure through his
wealth.
Gulika in Tenth place, which rules over trade, will make
the native a miser, doing ingratitude activites, efficient in
calculating the planet position will also lead his life by
getting food in the houses of Mlechas (polluted houses).
Tell this one boldly to all after ascertaining the strengths of
the planets.
If Gulika occupies the Eleventh place, the native will be
respected and meritful. He also confers propriety and
wealthy. His life term should be calculated, through his

Gulika in Twelfth place will make the native, grabs his

12 MAANDI IN PHALA DEEPIKA
Jaataka Phala Deepika

This astrological book was propounded by sage
Mandreshwar. This book contains all important principles
of Jothida Sastra. Brihat Jaataka, Saravali, SriPathy
Paththathi are main books of Jothida Sastra. Mandreshwar
explained the difficult subjects containing in above books
very easily. So as to understand his followers, he has noted
the Maandi in some places and Gulika in some other places.
There is one chapter for "Gulika Sphutam". This Gulika
sphutam subject is not at all found in Brihat Jaataka and
Saravali. In Sripathy Pathathy method of Maandi udaya is
explained. The detailed explanation about Maandi is not
seen in SriPathy Pathathy. So Mandreshwar would have
collected about the Maandi from some other important
Jothida Sastra Scriptures. His period is not known but from
the explanations, he would have lived in the 17'hcentury.
Gulika In 12 Bhavas:
151 Place : In Lagna, the person concerned will become
a thief, cruel, irreligious, sceptic and an
agnostic, immodest. He will be having a
normal body (not stout), ugly eyes, less
children. He will not be having adequate.
knowledge, but eating much, unhappy,
proud, short-lived, not brave and short
tempered.
2"d Place The native will not speak pleasant words.
Quarrelsome, not wealthy and not having
much grain. Living in other countries.
Devoid of truth and Dharma, inadequate
knowledge in argument of important

13 THE TIME OF DEMISE OR DEATH:
(Phala deepika)
Death in Gochara:
1. The Lord of S'h house
2. The Lord of22"d decanate (Drekkana) and
3. Maandi or their Navamsa or their Trines, the native
will die (Chapter 17, Slo 2)
Add the degree sphutas of Sun, Lagna and Maandi
and divide it by 12. Find the sign occupied by the balance
Longitude, when the Jupiter in transit passes through that
sign or its trines (of balance Longitude), the death may
occur (Chapter 17, Slo 9)
Month of death may be arrived from the sign, divided
by the sums sphutas of the ascendant and Maandi by 12.
The Amsa relating to it will also indicate the solar month.
The death may occur when the moon occupy the sign
which is represented by the sums of the sphutas of Maandi
and Moon.
The time of death will be the sign, represented by the
sums of Maandi, ascendant and Moon (Chapter 17, Slo
11).
When Jupiter passes through the sign of Amsa occupied
by Maandi, the death may occur. The transit of Saturn
passes through the Dvadasamsa occupied by Maandi or
may be the time of demise, when the Sun passes through
the S'h or 9'h place of decanate.
Add the sphutas of ascendant, the moon and Maandi.
Divide it by 12 to find the balance. The transit of Sun during
the lord of sign and Amsa arrived by the balance which we
derived by dividing 12 may be the death time (Chapter 17,
Slo 12)
Multiple Gulika sphuta by 9 and add it and divide by
12. The transit of Saturn indicated by the sign in Rasi and
Navamsa, the death may occur (Chapter 17, Slo 13)

Death may occur, when the Saturn passes through the
weak sign of Rasi and Amsa occupied by Maandi or Moon.

For a night birth of a native, the death may occur, when
Saturn passes through the trine of the sign occupied by
Maandi at the time of birth.
For a day birth of the native, the demise may happen
from the 7th place of Saturn, occupied by Gulika (Chapter
17,Slo21)
For a night birth, the demise may happen when the
Saturn transits through the sign and Amsa occupied by
Maandi.
For a day birth, when the Saturn passes throu~h the
sign and Amsa occupied by the Sun or its 5'\ 7th or gt place
(Chapter 17, Slo 25)
Count from the Lord of ascendant to Rasi occupied by
Maandi. So many signs that equivalent from the position
of Saturn's (Chapter 17, Slo 26)
In this chapter 17, last para 28 gives a final conclusion
of the demise:
The transit of the Saturn, Jupiter, Sun and Moon through
the following places.
I. Lord of 6, 8 and 12.
2. Lord of 22 decanate
3. Lord of the 8'h decanate
4. Maandi in Rasi and Amsa
5. When the Saturn passes through the Rasi, Amsa or
their trines.
In chapter 17, last para, the death may occur due to
the above said reasons. In this chapter 21, para 31 explains
some additional points. Determine lord of the power less
planets occupied by Sani, Gu1ika, Rahu, 22"d Decanate and
8th Lord. In their Dasa period also death may occur. In the

transit, the 6'h, S'h and 12'h place from Saturn, death also
occurs.
The malefic planets occupied in the S'h pla~e and aspects
the S'h place. The lord of the S'h house decanate lord, lord of
Gulika will give virtues. The death may occur during the
Dasa Bukthi period of the worst malefic planets mentioned
above.

14 MAANDI AND PAPAKARTHARI YOGA:
There are two types of yogas named Subhakartari Yoga

and Papakartari Yoga.
Subhakartari Yoga:
If Lagna is hemmed between benefic planets, this yoga is
formed and will give good results. When the lagna is in the
following position, the yields will be more.
1. Hemmed between two benefic planets
2. Benefics planets conjunction.
3. Benefics planets in own house or in the house
benefic
4. Aspected by benefic planets.
Generally if the lagna is hemmed between the two
benefic planets, the result will be good. The native will
'be long lived. He will have good health and free from
diseases.
PapaKartari Yoga:
When a benefic planet is hemmed between two malefic
planets, this yoga is caused. Then the benefic planets will
lose its original strength. Reasons for the loss of strength to
a benefic planet.

When the Maandi is placed in the original position, this
yoga can be found out. Sometimes or in some horoscopes
by placing the Maandi and if it is another side lagna, when
there is a malefic on one side certainly papa kartari yoga
is caused. Here as Maandi is also a malefic would give
negative results. If it is not properly placed, sometimes'
this yoga is seemed to be disappeared. So Maandi plays an
important role in this papakartari yoga.

with Mercury will make him mad. When the Gulika is
associated with Jupiter, the native will not have religious
faith. If the Gulika is associated with Jupiter, the .individual
will have connection with low grade women.

16 YOGAS BY MAANDI:
There are two types of yoga in planetary combination. One

is giving Subha Yoga and another is Arishta Yoga which
will give evil results. The planetary combination seems to
be giving good results. Sometime may not fruitful results
due to combination of Maandi or aspected by Maandi.
Hence some important Asubha Yogas in respect of Maandi
are explained in this chapter.
Death of crowd (cluster) at time:
Many persons are being killed at a time. This is being
happened fromolden days to till date in the Wars, Natural
calamities, Accidents, etc.,
According to an individual horoscope, his life period
is considered to be long-lived, but he met with an accident
and died in 30 years itself. This is unnatural and violent
death. Like this many incidents are happened daily. What
is the reason for it? For this question, the sages had already
propounded and explained.
The age of a person determined as 60 and above. He met
with a train accident and attained (Durmarana) unnatural
death in the age of 25. Then his sprit will wander upto 60
years (determined period) and then only the soul will be
pleased.
Explanations of Sarvaartha Chinthamani for the cluster
of the death:-
1. All benefic planets in Neechcha position
2. Those planets should be nearer to Sun
3. And looses strength in planetary war
4. And in Enemies house
This native will met unnatural death in the cluster
or will die with many persons in the cluster

17 KAARAKA BHAVANASAYA DOSHA AND MAANDI
Kaaraka Bhavanasaya dosha is the common language in

Jothida Sastra means, "A particular planet which places in
its original BHAVA will ruin its influence, if that planet is
not in a good position. Generally, whenever the astrologer
telling about this yoga, they have forgotten the term, if the
planet is not in good condition. According to this Dosha,
the influence of planets as follows:
1. Sun in 91h place : Evil effects to Father
2. Moon in 4th place: Ill effects to Mother
3. Mars in 3rct place : Dosha to Younger Brother
or Misunderstanding with
Brothers
4. Jupiter in 51h place Dosha to Children
5. Venus in 71h place Dosha to Life Partner
6. Saturn in 81h
place For Male long-lived and for
Female short-lived.
ln respect of this dosha, there are no specific points
mentioned in original texts for Saturn. For Mercury, Rahu
and Kethu, ill effects regarding dosha are not found in
original texts. However Maandi also spoils the karaka
strength where it is placed. Karaka dosha which explained
above are also similar, when the Maandi is placed in the
above places.
Kethu and Maandi in Fourth place will make trouble to
the native's mother (Poem- 105)

18 MAANDI IN POORVA PARACHARYAM
This book is published by Tanjore, Saraswathi Mahal
Library. The original text was written in Sanskrit and
translated in Tamil. This book contains the main subjects
of Brihat Parasara, Saaravali, Sripathi Pathathy, Prasanna
Sastra.
The author of the book is not seen in this text. Maharishi
Parasara, was one of the 18 persons whom were eminent
in Jothida Sastra, was much respected by this author
and named this book as Poorva Paracharyam. This book
contains two parts, there is no name for part l and Part II
is described as Santhana Deepika. This book contains the
fruitful subjects of the following original text:

The following five planets namely Sun, Mars, Saturn,
Rahu and Maandi are said to be the cruel planets. These
planets are harmful. Mars is giving much harmful than
Sun. like this Saturn is more than Mars, Rahu is more than
Saturn, Maandi is more than Rahu. Here Kethu is omitted,
because Kethu and Mars are equivalent in cruelty (Part I-
Chapter II, Para l)
Explanation:
Hence, we can come to understand that Maandi is cruel
planet and it will give lot of injury.
The role of planets in connection with Death:
The powerful planets which are connected with death of
an individual are as follows:
1. Mars is harmful than Sun.
2. Saturn is harmful than Mars.
3. Rahu is harmful than Saturn.
4. Maandi is harmful than Saturn.
We should decide the powerful (strength) planet which
is giving maraka, by comparing the natural strength and
this type of temporary house strength (Chapter V - Page
49- Para 13)
Explanation:
Planets have Six fold Strength. These six fold strength of the
planets should be decided with the native's horoscope.

2. Sheshta (Motional)
3. Uchcha or one derived from its exaltation position
4. Dik (Directional)
5. Ayana or one derived from its declination
6. Sthana (Positional).
Here the explanation is given so as to understand the roles
of the planet and importance of Maandi. The detailed
explanations regarding the physical death or death by
other sources are available and can be determined as per
the rules prescribed for it. Brihat J aataka, one of the ancient
astrology book clearly explained the departed souls from
the body. ·
Illness due to Fear: Maandi in one of the places of I,
4, 7, 10 or Kethu in Lagna 4th or lOth Bhava or aspect by
inemical planet, the native will suffer from fear (i.e. seeing
the Deity) (Chapter XIV- Para 29)
Explanation: Affected by the Pretha Soul
Adopting other's child: If Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn,
Aquarius be the FifthBhava and Saturn, Maandi is posited
in one of the above Lagna or aspect by the above planets.
The native will get an adopted child (Part II - Chapter I -
Para 15).
If the Maandi is in Virgo and 5th Bhava is the Saturn's
house, that native will adopt a child. For the similar
position, if Guru aspects the native will have issues. (Part
ll - Chapter I - Para 16).

19 BEEJA SPHUTA AND KSHETRA SPHUTA -EX-
PLANATION
Add together the Longitudes of Sun, Jupiter and Satur.

The sum arrived is called as Beeja Sphuta. Similarly add
together the Longitudes of Moon, Mercury and Jupiter.
These two are called as Santhana Sphutam.
If Beeja Sphuta and Navamsa Rasi are strengthened,
the native's issue will be male child. IfKshetra Sphuta and
N avamsa Rasi are powerful, issue will be female child (Part
II, Chapter I, Slo 27-28)
If Beeja Sphuta Lord and Gulika in Rasi, Gulika in
Navamsa, eleventh Lord of Navamsa are the same above
these one, issue will be male child. (Sloka 29)
Explanation with reference to Phala Deepika:-
According to Phala Deepika, Beeja and Kshetra Sphuta
should be decided as follows:
In a female horoscope, add together the Sphutas of
Jupiter, Moon and Mars. The sign arrived at represents
"Kshetra Sphuta". Kshetra Sphuta should arrive in even
sign (in Rasi) and even sign in Navamsa. She will have
children (sons). Then the Kshetra Sphuta is fertile.

20 POORVA PARACHARYAM
Deciding the Marriage of a person:

If you add Lagna Sphitta, Moon's Sphuta and Maandi
Sphuta, we will derive Lagna Thiri Sphuta. Like this, we
can derive the Thiri Sphuta of all Bhavas, by adding Moon
Sphuta, Maandi Sphuta and the particular Bhava Sphuta.
Thus we can ascertain Twelve Thiri Sphuta for 12 Bhavas.
According to Prasna Marga, if the particular bhava Thiri
sphuta is equivalent to that Bavathipathi, that bhava will
be ruined. In Prasanna Marga, it is explained properly. By
adding the Seventh Bhavathipahi sphuta, moon Sphuta
and Maandi Sphuta, whether the native will have wife or
not may be ascertained. If the Thiri Sphuta and Seventh
Bhava Sphuta are equivalent one, the native will have no
wife or he or she may not have marriage. (Para 30).
Oulika rises at 2 Oatis on Saturday and 26 Oatis on
Sunday after Sunrise. That particular Oatihas is the time
of rising Oulika and Oulika Sphuta should be calculated as
per the same method for Lagna Sphuta.
Maandi or Oulika Sphuta to be calculated for week
days as follows: Maandi would rise at the end of 26 Oatis
on Sunday, 22 Oatis on Monday, 18 on Tuesday, 14 on
Wednesday, and 10 Oatis on Thursday and 6 Oatis on
Friday. For the night births, Oatis from Sundays are 10, 6,
2, 26, 22, 18, and 14 respectively. (Para 32)
lf Jupiter occupies in Lagna, 9th Bhava or lO'h Bhava,
conjoined with Maandi and 61h Lord or aspected by the
Sixth Lord may lose the children due to Brahmin's curse.
(Para II - Chapter- I, Para 39).
If malefic occupied in 9th Bhava, Saturn conjoined with 5th
Lord and Maandi in 1'', 5th or 9th Bhava, loss of children may
be due to curse of the natives Father. (Para II - Chapter- l,
Para43).

Duration of Life Time Calculation:

This is a book containing various type deaths and period of
deaths. This book was printed and published in 1908. The
authorofthebook was not known. It was prepared by Chenji
Ekambara Mudaliyar and corrected by P.M. Ponnusamy. It
is seen from the introduction, they published in the year
1908, was kept in the Government ofTamilNadu, Archives
Centre and Reprinted.
There are some important factors about Maandi in this
book. All kinds of deaths and year of death are being noted
with reference to the planets positions.
Jothida Rahasyam:
1. Gulika in Lagna, Jupiter in 8'h place, in the Rasi
Aries or Scorpio. The native will die in the age of
Three (Poem - 30, Page 46). Explanation: Then the
Lagna will be Aries or Virgo.
2. Add Moon's Sphuta with Gulika's Sphuta, if the
total sum is equivalent to Moon's Sphuta, the native
will suffer from protracted illness (Poem - 209, Page
114). Explanation: Date of Birth- 6th December 1975
and Time of Birth 06. 37 AM. Latitude 10.50 (N) &
Longitude 78.46 (E).

29 SARVAARTHA CHINTHAMANI (Tamil)
Sarvaartha Chinthamani, Tamil Astrology book was

published by the Saraswathi Mahal Library from the
Manuscripts which were preserved in this library. This
library is called as the treasure house of knowledge built
by Maharaj Sarfoji. Sarvaartha Chinthamani, an old
commentary in Tamil which was in the form of Tamil
poetry was translated with Tamil verse. This publication is
based on the translation of the original Sanskrit text in the
Tamil text. Original Sanskrit text was propounded by one
Venkatesa Dei vagnar, who collected the details of astrology
from various texts of Sanskrit. The detail about the Tamil
translator is not known. Tamil Sarvaartha Chinthamani
is not a true translation of Sanskrit text. It contains main
points of the original text.
Sarvaartha Chinthamani (Sanksrit)
This Astrology book was propounded by Sri Venkatesa
Deivagnar in Sanskrit language and later on Translated
in Tamil. In this book the sage mentioned the Maandi in
Sloka 40 as Maandi. In some other places Gulika, in Sloka
159, "Saturn, Maandi, Rahu, Gulika" in Rasis.
According to the author here Maandi and Gulika
are not one and the same. Th~re are no specific points to
differentiate Maandi and Gulika as all sages has noted
Maandi or Gulika. The points which are not noted in this
book are translated and given below:
According to Deivagnar, Maandi and Gulika are two
separate Upa-grahas. Only in one slogan these words
are found. If Malefic occupies the Lagna or with the lord
Lagna, Gulika be in "TRIKONA" or conjoined with the
lord of Lagna. Rahu be in Lagna, the native will die with
witch craft.

30 MAANDIIN JAATAKA TATTVAM
lt is generally said that the lords of the bhaavas when

placed in 6th, 8th or 12th harm their own bhaava. The native
is cheated by others,lives , under fear of thieves etc .If the
malefic are in the ascendant associated with Gulika,or if
the lord of the ascendant is associated with a malefic,or if
Rahu is in the ascendant.
The elders opine that the native will have a large kidney
if Rahu is associated with mars and is placed ascendant or
if Rahu is associated with Saturn.The Kidney of the native
will be enlarged if the lord of the ascendant is in the eighth
house or if Rahu and Gulika are in the eighth house The
kidney is large if Rahu is in the ascendant, Gulika is in
the Fifth or in the nineth house Mars in association with
Gulika is in the eighth house.The Kidney will be large if
the lord of that house (wherein the navaamsa of the lord
of the ascendant is placed) is associated with Rahu, Mars
and Gulika.
Loss of Wealth
There will be loss of wealth through enemies if the owner
of the 12th house is either weak, conjoined with Gulika etc.
and is also associated with the lord of the 61h mansion.
Yoga for Utter Poverty
The native suffers from utter poverty if the lord of the 9th
occupies the 12th house, the lord of the 12th in the 2"ct and
malefic in the 3rct house.The moon, Jupiter and Saturn in
angular houses, Gulika and mars in the 51h, 8th or 12th house
make the person utterly poor.
Conjucal unhappiness
lf the lord of lagna is associated with Saturn, Maandi or
Rahu there will no comfort in the bed i.e.Between Wife and
Husband.

Regarding Idiots
If Saturn, the moon and Gulika are in quadrants the native
will be a dull-witted fool. With Gulika in the 2nd associated
with the Sun and aspected by a malefic or with the lord of
the 3rd associated with Saturn, the native will be an idiot. If
the lord of the 2nd is associated with a malefic and posited
in the lOt\ the person will be shy in public and behave
foolishly. If the lord of the 3rd is associated with Rahu, the
native will be an idiot. The same result happends when
Saturn is in the 5th and the lord of the 5th is associated with
a malefic. If Gulika and Saturn are in the 5th and are not
assocated with a benefic, the native will be idiot. lf Jupiter
is in the 5th house, even an intelligent person will forget his
knowledge.
Neck Trouble
The throat or neck will be affected if the lord of the 3rd is
associated with Mercury. The same is the case if a malefic
is in the 3rd house. IfGulika is in the 3rd house, the neck will
be surely affected. If the Moon is associated with a Malefic,
there will be affliction to face and neck.
Ear Trouble
If Mars is in the Pretapuree amsa in the 3rd house, there will
be a trouble in the ear. The same is the case when Gulika
and Saturn are the 3rd and unaspected by a benefic.
Fear of Animals
The person is likely to have cause of fear from foxes or
other animals if Gulka and Mars are in the 2nd or the 8th
house and aspected by the lord of the 2nd.
Abnormal Relations:
If either association with or aspect by a malefic to the Ist, the
4th, the 7th or the lOth house is noted, the person will have
abnormal union with a cow. The same is the case when
Saturn is associated with a malefic or Gulika.

Withdrawal from 'order':
The planet which urged him on to take to asceticism, if
defeated in war, will make the native too give up asceticism.

of the thieves, royal disfavours, cheating by others, if the
ascendant is associated with or aspected by Saturn.
Maandi in 2~ House/Bhava:
1. Maandi in conjunction with Saturn in second house
may cause eye defects.
2. Lord of second house in conjunction with Sun, Mars
and Kethu and aspected by Saturn and Gulika. The
native will suffer from Jaundice disease in Gall-
Bladder, Eye Disease and Blood Diseases.
3. Lord of second be a malefic conjoined with Gulika
or conjoined with Malefic in the house of Neechcha
or Enemy in Navamsa, the native will be a foolish,
hot tempered, rude man.
4. If Mars and Gulika associated in second place or in
8th house or if the lord of second house conjoined

PRASNA MARGA
Prasna, one part of astrology is considered as a main subject
in Kerala. Regarding the Prasna there are so many books
Prasna V aishnava, Prasna Sironmani, Deivajna Vallaba,
Prasnna Marga and Jinendramala are being considered as
important texts in the history of Horary Astrology. Prasna
Marga was propounded by Namboodiri of Kerala and
Jinendramala was done by Jainmuni and Upendra Chariar
translated it in Tamil. As the Jainmuni belongs to Jain
Community it was named as Jinendramala.
Jinendramala has not described about Maandi. Prasna
Marga describes the ill effects of Maandi, its rising time,
Kochara effects in various places. In Prasna Marga at the
time of query planets positions are decided and according
to that various subjects are dealt with. From Birth to Death
all the events are described and remedial measures are also
described. For deciding the factors Maandi positions are
given much importance in all the subjects.
Some important points only noted in this book, as to
know the importance ofMaandi.
Prasna Marga, Part I, is an exhaustive treatise on the
various aspects of predictive astrology of immense practical
utility. The work can be considered as of exceptional
interest and value.
The ancient classic texts deals not only with the various

(Prasna Marga: Stanza- 21 - Part I)

Before entering the Maandi in VishaGatihas. We
should understand the term 'VishaGatihas'. The duration
ofVishaGatihas is determindedas 4 Ghatihas. (4 Ghatihas
x 24 Minutes= 96 minutes) one hour and 36 minutes.
This is not a constant one. When the moons movement is
60 Ghatihas,4 Ghatihas has to be taken forcalculation. When
it increases or decreases from 60 Ghatihas, VishaGhatihas
time will also increase or decrease respectively. For that
purpose 27 stars period for 27 days are given within

34 MAANDI AND KALATRA DOSHA
Divorce- Nowadays this is one common word in marriage

life. So many marriages end in Divorce. The cases pending
in the family courts are increasing day by day due to the
misunderstanding between couples. There are so many
points in Astrology and one of the main reason among
that is Maandi. If it is combined with Sukra (Venus) the
following results may occur.
I. Love marriage with another caste
2. Divorce after marriage
3. Unpleasant life with couple
4. May have illicit sexual union
5. Abnormal delay in marriage
6. If Maandi aspects Sukra, the married couple will
have no happiness after marriage.
Only by persuing the horoscopes of the couple
these results may have to understand. And also another
important point should be noted. When the Kalatrakaraka
or Kalatrhra S tanadipathi joins with Maandi, their marriage
life may have disturbances. Illustrations are explained in
the last chapter.

We already explained in chapter 16 about childless due

to Maandi Dosa. This chapter is to be remembered when
the charts are persued. Importance of 5th bhava is being
explained in this book. For the issues to the couple only
some important astrological points are given below:

2. 5th housed from the ascendant and Moon should
also be well placed
3. An auspicious time for husband and wife after
marriage to be selected for intercourse
4. Lords of Ascendant and 5th house should be
exchanged or aspected by beneficts.
5. Beeja (Seed) Sphuta for male and shetra sphuta for
female should not be afflicted
6. Ashtaka varga counts also to be predicted, the 5th
house hindus or hindus for Jupiter derived should
be sufficient one.
7. "Santhana Thithi" should fall within 8th day of the
dark (Paksha) half the fortnight.

9. The Navamsa sign ofGulika
10. The Trinal houses from Rasi and Navamsa rasi
occupied by Gulika
1 I. ln Brihat parasara hora, one chapter is assigned to
effects of curses in the previous birth. These are
some points for not having male issue. One fo the
main point relaed to Gulika is given below:

serpant. lf at birth Mercury as the lord of the 5th
being in the Navamsa of Mars is associated with

12th house, the Moon is in the 5th, Saturn and Gulika

in birth charts, due to above reasons, the native will

36 MAANDI - HELPING TO FIND THE CORRECT
LAGNA
To ascertain the correct lagna, when the doubt arises

regarding the Lagna from the position of Maandi,
correct Lagna can be find out. According to Sarvaartha
Chinthamani sloka 121 and 122, some important features
are under mentioned:
1. When Rasi Sandi or Lagna Sandi is finding in one
horoscope, the correct Lagna may be ascertained by
the position of Maandi in that horoscope.
2. When the planets are posited in Rasi Sandi or Bhava
Sandi, the good results given by that planets, will
disappear and only the ill effects are attained by the
individual
3. Either for Aruda or for Janma Lagna this method
can be followed.
4. When the doubts araises about the Janma Lagna
by questioning the position of the native at that
time and by the effects of Maandi position in the
horoscope, the Lagna may be fixed.
5. lf the Moon is strengthened in the chart, Jenma
Lagna can also be ascertained by the position of
Moon. ·
Note: Sometimes, the time ofbirth may not be properly
noted in the chart, and then the Lagna may vary. At that
time by fixing the Maandi in the chart correct Lagna may
be ascertained.

ln Prasna Marga, there is one chapter regarding Vivaha

Prasna. The explanation is as follows as mentioned in Stan-
za 19.
· "IfYama Sukra orthe lord of the lOth house from him
occupies the 6th, the 8th or the 12th from Yama Sukra,mar-
riage will not take place at the time fixed. IfRahu or Ketu
or Gulika occupies or aspects the Yoga Sphuta formed by
adding the longitudes of Yama Sukra, the lord of Lagna,
and Venus, the married couple will not have any happi-
ness after marriage"
The Stanza 19 is much more important regarding the
Gulika and its effects on aspecting.
The method of arriving Yama Sukra:
Yama Sukra rising Gatihas as follows:
After Sunrise, Sunday 22 Gatihas, Monday 18 Gatihas,
Tuesday 14 Gatihas, Wednesday 10 Gatihas, Thursday 6
Gatihas, Friday 2 Gatihas and Saturday 26 Gatihas respec-
tively. These Gatihas are constant one and also common to
both Day Aruda and Night Aruda.
From the Sunrise for the specified Gatihas for that day,
Sphuta needs to be calculated.

livery will be in lOth month, in the Sthira Rasi or Fixed Rasi
in 11th Month, in the Dvisva Bhava or common sign in 12th
month.
So we can come to conclusion that they have propound-
ed only the Sidereal months. According to the expert doc-
tor's opinion about delivery, regarding the present period
the delivery may be within 283 days. Sometimes that may
exceed only one or two days. This Adhana lagna will help
us to find out the health positions, when the horoscopes
are referred.
Kavi Kalidasa in his uttara kalamrita suggested some
important three suggestions to verify the birth time. They
are as follows
I. The time ofbirth
2. Sex of the native
3. The Lagna
One of the calculation methods is given below:
By considering the position of Maandi, we can rectify the
Lagna, not the exact time of birth.
1. Rasi and Navamsa positions of Maandi and by the
moons may be noted.
2. Find out the stronger one, the acendant of birth will
correspond to the following three items.
a. From the stronger positions of the sign occupied
by Maandi

b. It may be the sth' ih or 9th sign for either of the
two
c. If the Navamsa sign occupied by Maandi and the
moon are stronger than their Rasi charts, the la-
gna will correspond to the houses 1~,7 9 from the
stronger of the two.

explanation given to Nisheka Lagna is as follows:

Nisheha Lagna
I searched about this subject in the internet.
Sri Dhira Ksna Dasa had raised some doubts about
this calculation method. He had given his own birth chart
and unable to come to a conclusion. His calculations are
not up to mark as the days in womb is about 334 days. He
had questioned "I don't see coming near the average 273
days. It takes the complete 10 Zodiacal revolutions also.
What would be the correction factor used for the difference
between Savanamana and Sauramana.
Explanations:- His calculations are given in annexure
1 A, correct calculation as per Parasar is explained by me in
Annexure lB.
Another person named Sri GaurangaDas had written in
the Jyothish magazine (Feb 2011) about the Nisheha Lagna.
He also raised some questions, "Sage Parasara leaves us
uncertain, however regarding the nature of months and
days. Whether it is Savana (30 days month) 360 days or
Solar or Lunar days. So it is not so easy to determine the
accurate result.
Explanations:- Those who are studying this subject can
easily understand my calculations.
According to my best of knowledge, the proper
calculation is given below. The readers those who are well
versed in this subject may intimate to me. If there is any
wrong calculation or any error, I shall apologise for that.
As this calculation methods are rare, even if I am
committed error, which can be rectified and will spread
among the readers and they can wonder how the sages
had propounded this subject also. The readers can also
improve this subject and may suggest about this subject in
internet so that this subject will spread all over the world.

40 REMEDIES OF MAANDI DOSA
1. Hindu Dharma is being explained in this book.

Maandi Dosha will not affect to one, who is doing
ceremony to the forefathers according to their family
conventions.
2. When the Maandi is placed in benefic places and if
that benefic places are aspected by benefic planets,
the strength of the Maandi is reduced. Then the
Native will have strength and he can't be ruined
by enemies. Especially when Jupiter aspects that
places, this result will occur.
3. Generally there is one version: When Jupiter aspects
a place, the yield is Crore profits. According to this,
If Jupiter aspects Maandi, Eventhough Maandi is in
bad sign, there won't be any harm with Maandi.
4. Maandi will not give much ill effects to the aspecting
places. It will give bad effects when it is combined
with benefic planets.
5. When the Jupiter in Trikona in one's Horoscope
Maandi will not give ill effects
6. If Jupiter and Venus combined and placed in
Kendra, it wont give bad effects
7. When the benefic planets are placed in I, 4, 7, 10
and Malefic planets in3, 6,11 places, Maandi Dosha
'Yill not hurt the individual.
8. If the native horoscope be one 'RajaYoga' Jitataka
and his Dasa's are also Yoha dasa, dosha by Maandi
will not give effect.
Important Remedies for Maandi Dosha
1. Brahmana Bhojana: In auspious days, feast for the
Brahmins to those who have well versed in Vedhas
can be arranyed

family rituals should be done.
3. Participating the functions of the family deity and
its temple renovation may fetch good results
4. Thilahoma: This is one of the most important
religious rituals. In some family, their ancestor
would have died by means of unnatural dealth ie
by accident or by hanging or by weapons. So as
to satisfy their departured soul this Homa to be
performed as to get rid of ill effects.
5. According to Hindu Dharma and Bhaja Govindam
we are performing ancestor's ceremony in Varanasi
and in Gaya. In Gaya we are praying the Lord
Vishnus foot so as to appease the soul of all the
relatives. And in south at Rameswaram is an
important place for performing the ceremonies.
6. Yearly Ceremony: Ceremony of the forefathers is
performed in their death day 'Thithi'. It should be
done without break.
7. Those who are unable to perform the above remedies,
many do the Poojas for Saturn and Prasada in
Thilarice may be distributed to the poors.
8. Those who are unable to perform yearly
ceremonies of forefathers they can atleast pray in
MAHALAYAPAKSHA according to the wishes of
the family priest.

41 MAANDI TEMPLE:
I have already noted that, Kavi Kalidasa in his

Uttarakalamritha had mentioned about Maandi and
Gulika. He had stated "these two sons of Saturn, Maandi &
Gulika are harmful and they spoiled the place dealt with".
According to the sloka there is one Lord Shiva Temple
named "SHREE RAMANATHA SWAMY- PARVATHA
VARDIN!" at THIRUNARAIYUR Village, Kumbakonam
Taluk, Tamil Nadu. In that ancient temple, there is one
separate Sanctum to Lord Saturn. In this SanctumSanctorum
Lord Shiva is blessing with Seshtadevi and Mandadevi and
also with Maandi & Gulika. King Dhasaradha was blessed
by Saturn in this temple itself. Kalidasa views are reflected
in this temple, ie., Maandi and Gulika are sculptured
separately. By performing poojas in this temple will ignore
the illeffectsofMa~ndi. This is the only the temple in which
Maandi remedies are to be performed in Tamil Nadu.

42 SHANISWARA AND HANUMAN:
The worship of Lord Hanuman will give good effects

for those who are having Dosha Shani Dosa. When the
Hanuman fired the palace of Ravana, there was no black
smoke. The smoke was swallowed by Saturn, who was in
the clutches of Ravana. So that Saturn promised Hanuman
that those who are praying Saturn on Saturday would not
be affected by their malefic effects. That ill effects will be
reduced.
As Maandi is the son of Saturn, worshipping Anjaneya
and Saturn with his Devi Jyeshta Devi will be the remedy
of ill effects Maandi.
So that important temples of SHANI BHAGAVAN
TEMPLE and SRI ANJANEYA TEMPLE in Karnataka

of Shravana (July - August), in the name of SHANI,

44. CONCLUSION:
I wish to state that, I have already explained in this
