Spelling Bees Rules

Eligibility

a. Spelling Bees are open to all students at any grades

b. The speller must not previously have been declared champion of the last Spelling Bee.

Basic Procedure:

1. Spellers follow a set order throughout the Bee.

2. Pronouncers provide words from a given list in order

3. After spelling, Pronouncers declare if the spelling is correct or incorrect.

4. Do not reuse misspelled words; move quickly to the next speller.

5. Spellers spell one word per round; incorrect spellings lead to elimination.

6. If all spellers misspell in a round, a new round begins.

7. If only one speller spells correctly, a new round begins for them.

8. Pronouncers aim for accurate pronunciation based on diacritical markings.

9. Pronouncers respond to specific requests for word details.

10. Judges determine correct spellings and uphold rules; their decisions are final.

11. Judges assist if a speller misunderstands a word.

12. Judges correct Pronouncer errors.

13. Disqualifications occur for specific infractions, including unsportsmanlike

conduct.

14. Spellers are not disqualified for pronunciation, questions, or noting word details.

15. Spellers face judges, pronounce words, and spell clearly.

16. Spellers are responsible for understanding unless Pronouncer errors occur.

17. Spellers cannot use objects or markings that could convey spelling advice.
