1.0 Introduction
The stakeholder report is for Ordinary Level Mathematics Paper Two (4004/02) for the November 2022 session.
The report captures the following:
 General performance of candidates
 Question-by-question analysis highlighting on
 Expected solution(s) and method(s) to get the solution.
 Common errors or misconceptions by candidates.
 The report ends with a conclusion.

2.0 General Comments
Generally, candidates did not perform well in most questions. Some candidates could not show an understanding of basic Mathematical concepts
and hence had very low marks. A few performed well but there are some topics they did not do well and these will be highlighted in the
conclusion.

3.0 Question-by-Question Analysis

the correct answer.
Those who wrote wrong answers had failed to identify the correct relevant theorem to be used.
The common wrong answer was 𝟖𝟎𝟎 .
(b) 𝟖𝟎𝟎 A good number of candidates managed to get the correct solution. However, some candidates
who gave wrong answers seemed to have interchanged part (a) and (b) solutions.
The common wrong answer was 𝟏𝟎𝟎 .
(c) 𝟒𝟐𝟎 The candidates were expected to use the theorem of an exterior angle of a triangle is equal to
the sum of opposite interior angles (𝟑𝟐𝟎 + 𝟏𝟎𝟎 ).
This part was poorly done by many candidates. The challenge was mainly on candidates
identifying the correct theorems to apply to arrive at a correct solution.
(d) 𝟏𝟏𝟔𝟎 Candidates were expected to draw line OD, and then apply the relevant theorem [2(𝐴𝐵̂ 𝐷)] This
question seemed to be difficult to most candidates, and a number of candidates avoided doing
this part altogether.
The common wrong answer was 𝟔𝟒𝟎
2 (a) 3(m−n)(m+n) Candidates were expected to find a common factor and factorise (𝑚 − 𝑛)(4𝑚 + 2𝑛 − 𝑚 + 𝑛)
Many candidates who chose to expand first failed to accurately do so. Very few candidates
managed to reach a correct solution for this part.
(b) 90 kg The expected method was 81 × 11 − 80.1 × 10
Most candidates failed to calculate the totals first and hence could not reach the correct answer.

The common wrong answer was 0,9 kg
(c) 42 % 30
The expected method was 100 − (40 + 100 × 60).
The question was poorly done by most of the candidates. The candidates were failing to
interpret 30% of the remainder.
The common wrong answer was 30%
(d) 𝒙 = −𝟒 The expected method was 2(4 − 𝑥) = 𝑥 × 𝑥
𝒙 =𝟐 (𝑥 + 4)(𝑥 − 2) = 0
Many candidates failed to clear the denominators and hence could not reach a correct answer
3 (a)(i) 𝒍=

Many candidates had challenges in substituting decimal fractions in an expression that is a
fraction.
(b) (i) 𝑻 = 𝒉 + 𝒌𝑵𝟐 A correct expression of partial variation was expected.
Several candidates failed to come up with a correct and appropriate mathematical statement
from a given word problem.
The common wrong expressions were: 𝑻 ∝ 𝒉 + 𝒌𝑵𝟐 , 𝑻 = 𝒉𝒌𝑵𝟐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻 = 𝒉 + 𝒌𝑵
(ii) h = 18 and A number of candidates were able to form correct simultaneous questions and correctly

(iii) 𝟑 Candidates were expected to substitute N= 7 in the formula.

4 (a) 𝟑 Candidates were expected to square the mixed fraction and then subtract from the first number.

(b) 𝟔𝒙𝟐 + 𝒙𝒚 − 𝟐𝒚𝟐 The expected method was 𝟔𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙𝒚 − 𝟑𝒙𝒚 − 𝟐𝒚𝟐 .
The part was poorly done by a number of candidates as their work showed lack of knowledge
on expansion and simplifying like terms.
The common wrong simplifications were:

And 𝟔𝒙𝟐 + 𝒙𝒚 +𝟐𝒚𝟐 showing wrong signs used

A number of candidates failed to factorise the denominator and also failed to find the correct
Lowest Common Denominator.

(b) 𝟏 The expected method was 𝒙 − 𝟑 < 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏 and 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏 ≤ 𝟓 − 𝒙.

𝟑 The item was fairly done, although some of the candidates failed to split the inequalities and
some used the equality signs instead of the inequality signs.

(c) (i) 𝟏 𝟏
DC = 16cm or 13𝟑cm The expected method was 𝟐 (𝑫𝑪 + 𝟖) × 𝟏𝟓 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎 or 𝟑𝑪𝑫 = 𝟖 × 𝟓 (when using similar
triangle method).
This part was poorly done by candidates. A number of candidates did not show any working.
The common wrong working shown was 8 + 8 =16.

(ii) 45𝒄𝒎𝟐 The expected method was 𝟖 × 𝟏𝟐𝟎.
The part was poorly done. Candidates were failing to analyse the shape so as to come up with
an appropriate method.
The common wrong solution was 60𝒄𝒎𝟐 .
SECTION B
6(a) Construction of a triangle The candidates were expected to correctly construct the triangle showing all the construction
with side 10cm, angle of arcs.

accurately

(b) (ii) Correct plots and graph Candidates were expected to correctly plot the curve using the given and calculated values.
Many candidates did well. Although a number of candidates reversed axes and missed or
wrongly plotted some points. Use of non uniform scale was also noted.
The plotting of (5;0) was incorrectly done by a number of candidates
(c)(i) 12,2 to 12,4 Candidates were expected to identify and mark the middle position on the vertical axes of their
graph and read the correct corresponding value on the horizontal axes.
Many candidates got the solution correct. However, a number of candidates drew the median
line from 25 instead of 25,5.
The common wrong solution was 12.1.
(ii) 5 Candidates were expected to read the graph and correctly calculate the desired value.

A few candidates got the correct answer. A number left it blank, indicating lack of knowledge
on the demands of the part

8 (a) Triangle P correctly drawn Candidates were expected to draw triangle and label it.
Done well by most candidates
The most common error was candidates drawing a triangle showing a reversal of axes e.g. point
(1;2) drawn instead of (2;1)

(c) (i) Triangle correctly drawn Candidates were expected to draw and label triangle R.
Most candidate did well.
(ii) Rotation Done poorly by many candidates who attempted the question. They are used to a centre of the

9(a) 𝒅 = −𝟖 Candidates were expected to correctly substitute in the equation and get the correct values.

negative sign.

(b) The correctly plotted points Candidates were expected to correctly plot the curve using the given and calculated values.

10 (a) 𝟏 Not a popular question. Candidates were expected to solve simultaneous equation that involved

It was poorly done by candidates. It seems the candidates did not fully understand the part.

It was well done by most of the candidates.
(iii) AB = 13,6m The candidates were expected to correctly apply the cosine rule.
It was well done by most candidates.
The common Error was that of candidates using the Pythagoras’ Theorem.
11 (a)(i) Correctly drawn and The candidates were expected to correctly show the given information on a Venn diagram.

It was poorly done by many candidates. Candidates did not use the polygon concepts correctly

It was poorly done by many candidates. Appropriately dividing the shape into workable parts
seemed to be challenge to many candidates

It was poorly done by many candidates. The answer dependent on part (ii) which was not done
well by many candidates.

The candidates were expected to correctly apply the quadratic formula 𝟐(𝟑)
It was well done by many candidates.
The most common wrong solutions were 𝒙 = −𝟐. 𝟖𝟒 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝟏, 𝟏𝟕 showing change of signs

The expected method was 𝟐 × 𝟐 × 𝟕 × 𝟑, 𝟑
It was poorly done by many candidates. Many candidates were using a wrong formula for
length of arc.

It was poorly done by many candidates. A number of candidates were trying to calculate the
area instead of volume

The most common wrong solution was 780g

4.0 Conclusion
The report highlighted the performance of the candidates in the component which showed poor performance by the majority of candidates
Question by question analysis shows that the following topics need attention by Teachers and Tearners in preparing for future examinations:
 Vectors
 Transformation
 Mensuration.
