L.I.F.E. -
Leisure Independence for Everyone
Breaking down barriers to build up leisure opportunities
Did you know a Certifed Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) can
offer 1:1 leisure counseling and coaching sessions just like an occupational
therapist, personal trainer, swim or yoga instructor may offer in their area
of expertise?
What is leisure counseling? It is helping individuals with disabilities develop a positive
leisure lifestyle. This is done through leisure appreciation, self-awareness, decision-
making, self-determination, leisure activity, community & social skills, leisure resources.
The ultimate goal is for an individual to engage in leisure as independently as possible.
How is it done? Arlington County CTRS staff determines an individuals recreational
needs using valid and reliable assessment tools then will design a program to build skills
based on the need and personal goals of the individual. Specifc outcomes may include
identifying leisure interests, money handling, practicing and improving appropriate
social interactions, learning a specifc leisure pursuit, etc. L.I.F.E. is meant to increase
participants leisure skills and provide information and support to pursue those
opportunities.
Who is it for? This is open to individuals, ages 13-adult, who have a disability
and motivated to actively participate in community recreation with reasonable
accommodations.
Offered at discounted rate of $45/hour for minimum of fve sessions plus one hour intake
assessment.
Please call 703-228-4736 or email arosenthal@arlingtonva.us. We will perform a phone
screening with you to determine goals and discuss fees.

Signing Smart Beginner
Signing Smart strategies integrate more than
150 American Sign Language signs into songs,
games and activities developed to engage very
young children and their parents. Research
has shown that using American Sign Language
with hearing babies and toddlers allows
communication and spoken language to happen
earlier and faster, while reducing frustration
and tantrums. Most children have two to three
words by 12 months, whereas Signing Smart
TM children typically have 25 signs and 16
words! Most children start combining words
into two-word sentences by 20 months, whereas
Signing Smartchildren typically do this by
11-14 months and some as early as six months!
The National Institute of Health even found a
12-point IQ increase for eight year-olds who used
signs as young children. More research, class

Everything is wonderful! My son loves it!
As a parent your program is one of the most helpful things
because by the time I pick my two up, their homework is
done, the edge has been taken off their hunger, and their
school jitters have been run off.
I Love the staff! They are so helpful and help with my childs

Changes, Cancellations and Closings
Due to the early publication deadline,
instructors may be changed before classes
begin. Classes are cancelled one week prior
to the start date if minimum enrollment has
not been met. PRCR also reserves the right to
cancel a class for any other reasonable cause
that prevents presentation of the subject in
an acceptable manner. Classes are cancelled
on County holidays and at the discretion of
the instructor. In case of storms, or any other
dangerous conditions, classes may not be held.
If Arlington County Schools are closed or close
early due to weather conditions, PRCR classes
are automatically cancelled. Watch Arlington
Information Channel 74 or other local media
stations for details or call 703-228-4715.
High Demand Classes
High Demand classes are indicated with an
cHD beside the class name. Due to their high
demand, non-residents pay a $25 additional
fee (instead of the regular $10) to help ensure
spots for Arlington residents.
