1. GENERAL
Allowable damage to structure is defined as physical change to a minor extent requiring no rectification other
than renovation of damaged protective treatment preceded in some cases by trimming or blending out the
damage.
Types of allowable damage and limits follow and these are applicable to individual parts of structure only in so
far as authorized by reference from the page 101 of the subject including the parts concerned.
The reader will therefore refer firstly to the appropriate subject to make sure that the common definitions in
paragraph 2. or definitions or limits at variance with these are applicable.
CAUTION: Cracks in structural parts are dealt with in 51-10-01 and are under no circumstances to be
considered allowable damage.
NOTE: If advice is required from the manufacturer refer to 51-10-01 for Damage Reporting Procedures.

2. DEFINITIONS OF DAMAGE
The forms of damage and the limits to which they are normally allowable subject to the conditions in
paragraph 1. follow:

A. Missing Paint
It is acceptable to operate the airplane with missing topcoat paint (with primer remaining in tact) in the
following areas:
 Wing
 Fuselage (excluding radome and RVSM related areas, see below)
 Landing Gear (Nose/Main/Door)
 Doors (Main Cabin/Escape Hatch/Baggage/Service)
 Vertical Stabilizer Assembly
 Horizontal Stabilizer Assembly
 Strakes
 Fairing Assemblies
 Composite structures (subject to exclusions below)
 Engine Nacelle/Cowling/Exhaust/Pylons/Inlet
For acceptable missing top coat limits for radome refer to 53-10-52, 101 and RVSM areas (Ref. AMM
34-11-29, 601).
For acceptable missing top coat paint limits for the ailerons, elevators and rudder refer to 51-60-00.
Topcoat paint is a form of corrosion protection and prevention. To prevent damage which will require
immediate repair, it is recommended that re-treating the exposed surfaces be completed as soon as
practical. Areas missing topcoat paint must be touched up (Ref. AMM 125/H-20, 20-10-228) to provide
full protection within 60 calender days of reporting.

Page 2
Sep.15 51-10-02
HAWKER 800 STRUCTURAL REPAIR MANUAL

For composite structures that have compromised or missing paint, it is recommended that re-treating
the exposed surfaces be completed as soon as practical. To prevent environmental and UV damage,
composite areas with compromised or missing paint must be touched up (Ref. AMM 125/H-20,
20-10-228) to provide full protection within 40 hours or 10 calender days of reporting, whichever occurs
first.

B. Abrasions, Corrosion, Scores and Scratches, free from Cracks

These forms of damage are allowable when having been smoothly blended out, and in the case of
corrosion entirely rubbed away, using on light alloy a glass fibre pencil and finally metal polish, the local
nominal thickness is not reduced by more than one twentieth or the thickness of surface cladding, the
limits of the effected area are not closer to any fastener than three times the fastener diameter (Ref.
Figure 1) and in light alloy parts inhibition of corrosion is applied before renovation of the appropriate
protective treatment.
NOTE: Metal polish used to finish cleaning up the damage will show up the existence of any pits of
corrosion still to be eliminated. Where an external unpainted surface bore very light superficial
corrosion, the removal and final polishing for which did not penetrate the material cladding or
give evidence of any pits or corrosion, a hand polishing will suffice as the final treatment.

C. Sheet Metal Flange Distortion, Free of Cracks

The allowable extent of such damage to a free flange is shown in Figure 2. The limits apply also to
flanges to which skin is attached provided coincidental distortion of the skin is also within allowable
limits, has not to be dressed out and fastenings within the area are secure or renewed.

D. Dents in the Skin, Free from Cracks

The normal extent to which such damage is allowable is shown in Figure 3 and applies only for
deformation confined to an area containing no change in thickness where a contour etched or machined
skin is concerned. An allowable dent within an area where preservation of aerodynamic smoothness is
desirable should be treated for restoration of correct profile.

E. Edge Breaks in Fastener Flanges

Any part whether formed from sheet, cut or machined from extrusion, thick plate billet or forging may
have breaks in an edge or a portion containing fasteners securing it to other structure considered
allowable if when suitably blended out the limits given in Figure 4 are not exceeded and no other
damage exists in the same cross section of the part.

F. Pitting in Skin Panels

Small spots of damage on the surface of any skin panel, caused for example by lightning or
impingement of hard small objects, may be considered allowable damage if no larger than 5/32 in.
(0.156 mm) diameter, no closer than 1.00 in. (25.4 mm) apart and when blended out and polished do
not exceed 0.005 in. (0.127 mm) in depth.

3. FASTENER HEAD CORROSION

Corrosion that is limited to only the head of the bolt (i.e. fastener head and slot, Ref. Figure 5 and Figure 6) is
acceptable as long as there is no evidence of corrosion at the bolt/skin interface or on the adjacent skin
panel. Any indication of fastener damage beyond minor surface corrosion (i.e. cracked, chipped or missing
heads), or loose fasteners is unacceptable. Evidence of these conditions should be further assessed in
accordance with (Ref. 51-10-01) and repaired as necessary in accordance with (Ref. 57-10-13, 201).

1. INFORMATION
The balance of the aileron, elevator and rudder must be checked and if necessary, adjusted whenever a
repair has been done or a paint finish changed.
When BC winglets are introduced vortex generators are added to the elevator control surface bottom skin.
These will have no effect on control surface balancing.
The identified aileron assemblies are installed on the installation assemblies 25-9WG1* and 25-8WG1* as
aileron balance assemblies.
There are three aileron conditions:
Aileron 25-8WG111 and 140-130012 have a horn and are fine balanced by weights on a stud in the horn.
These are installed to wings which do not have winglets.
Aileron 140M130019, 140-1701, 140-1702, and 140-1703 do not have a horn are balanced by plates on the
outboard and inboard nose assemblies. These are installed to wings which have winglets.
Aileron 25-8WG2003 has no horn and is balanced initially with plates on the outboard and inboard nose
assemblies and then fine balanced with weights on a stud in the end of the aileron. This is fitted to wings
which have winglets.
The control surface must be removed from the airplane (Ref. Aircraft Maintenance Manual, 27 - Flight
Controls) and restored to the condition specified below, complete with external paint finish if applicable.
For details of materials used during this repair scheme, refer to the Equipment/Materials table.

Equipment/Material Part/Item No.

Compound Sealing 326 (Ref. AMM 125/H-20, 20-95-301)

Epoxy Adhesive 306A (Ref. AMM 125/H-20, 20-95-301)
Safety lock wire 607A (Ref. AMM 125/H-20, 20-95-601)

2. AILERON BALANCING (25-8WG111, 140-130012)

NOTE: It is acceptable to have cosmetic damage and/or loss of no more than 200 square inches of topcoat
paint for each control surface/trim assembly without rechecking the weight or static balance.

A. Procedure
(1) The aileron condition includes all access covers, tab, tab connecting rod fairing and static wicks
(Ref. Figure 1).

NOTE: The tab connecting rods are left on the airplane.

(2) Keep the tab in the neutral position by applying lightweight adhesive tape on the upper surface
from aileron to the tab skin.

(3) Support the aileron horizontally, top surface uppermost, by using the inboard and outboard hinge
pins only and a spring balance at point A.

Page 2
Sep.15 51-60-00

NOTE: Point A to be located as shown (Ref. Figure 1). As the aileron chord is constant its
spanwise location is not important.

(4) With the chord line horizontal the spring balance must register between 1.88 lb and 2.25 lb
(0.85 kg and 1.02 kg) (tail end heavy).

(5) If the aileron does not balance within the given load, do a balance weight adjustment as follows:

(a) Remove the horn leading edge skin.

CAUTION: The total weight on the horn bolt must not be more than:
Mod.253039 Part A - 1.625 lb (0.74 kg)
Mod.253039 Part B - 1.625 lb (0.74 kg)
Without Mod.253039 - 1.56 lb (0.71 kg)

(b) Adjust the balance weights to the required total weight using either balance weight
Part No. 25 WG 97 or 25 WG 53 as shown (Ref. Figure 1).

(c) Temporarily secure the balance weights and install the horn leading edge skin.

(d) Do a check of the balance.

(6) When the balance is correct remove the horn leading edge skin, adjust the distance tube length to
suit the revised trim weight and finally secure with a nut and split pin.

(7) Install the horn leading edge skin.

(8) Remove the aileron from its supports and remove the adhesive tape from the tab.

3. AILERON BALANCING (140M130019, 140-1701, 140-1702, 140-1703)

(Ref. Figure 2).

NOTE: The tab connecting rods are left on the airplane.

(2) Keep the tab in the neutral position by applying lightweight adhesive tape on the upper surface
from aileron to the tab skin.

(3) Support the aileron horizontally at the inboard and outboard hinge pins only. Put a spring balance
at 11 inches aft of the hinge line.

NOTE: The aileron chord is constant so the spanwise location is not important.
NOTE: If the hinge link assembly is assembled to the aileron make sure that it hangs vertically so
that it does not affect the balance.

(4) With the chord line horizontal, the spring balance must register 0 - 4.3 oz (0.27 lb) (0.12 kg) nose
heavy.

(5) If the balance is incorrect adjust as follows:

(a) Remove the outboard aileron nose assembly.

(b) Install or remove balance plates as required. Install plates from outboard to inboard.

NOTE: For aileron 140M130019-0011/0012, 140-1702, 140-1703 install a maximum of

three 140M130019-0013 balance weights at each balance location.
NOTE: For aileron 140-1701 install a maximum of two 140M130019-0013 balance weights
at each balance location.

(c) Attach the balance plates as shown with bolts and washers. If necessary install a spacer
NAS43HT4-9 and/or extra washers NAS1149E0432P to make up the thickness.

NOTE: If required, it is permissible to counterbore the third balance weight at any location
9/16 dia. x 0.050 deep to provide for weight attach bolt head clearance to aileron
frame at installation.

(d) Install the outboard nose assembly. Bond with adhesive (Item 306A) and release agent. Fill
the counterbores with sealant (Item 326).

(e) If additional weight is required, remove inboard nose assembly. Install a maximum of two
weights 140M130019-5 plus one additional -0013 at each balance location.

NOTE: Do not install any plates on the inboard nose unless both balance plate locations on
outboard nose are full.

(f) Apply primer and paint to match the aileron finish.

Page 5

(6) Check that the aileron is balanced within the limits given in paragraph 3.A. (4).

4. AILERON BALANCING (25-8WG2003)

(Ref. Figure 3).

NOTE: The tab connecting rods are left on the airplane.

(2) Keep the tab in the neutral position by applying lightweight adhesive tape on the upper surface
from aileron to the tab skin.

(3) Support the aileron horizontally at the inboard and outboard hinges only. Put a spring balance at
11 inches aft of the hinge line.

NOTE: The aileron chord is constant so the spanwise location is not important.
NOTE: If the hinge link assembly is assembled to the aileron make sure that it hangs vertically so
that it does not affect the balance.

(4) With the aileron horizontal the spring balance must register 0 - 4.3 oz (0.27 lb) (0.12 kg) nose
heavy.

B. Aileron Balancing Initial Adjustment

(1) Install balance plates 25-8WG2003-81 to the aft face of the outboard nose assembly
(25-8WG2013) until the spring balance registers 0 - 4.3 oz (0.27 lb) (0.12 kg) nose heavy. A
maximum of two balance plates may be installed at each of the locations on the nose assembly.
Install the plates from outboard to inboard. If a single plate is installed only, install a spacer
NAS43DD4-10 with the plate.

(2) Install balance plates 25-8WG2003-5 to the aft face of the inboard nose assembly (25-8WG2011)
until the spring balance registers 0 - 4.3 oz (0.27 lb) (0.12 kg) nose heavy. A maximum of two
balance plates may be installed at each of the locations on the nose assembly. Install the plates
from outboard to inboard. If a single plate is installed only, install a spacer NAS43DD4-10 with the

6. RUDDER BALANCING
NOTE: It is acceptable to have cosmetic damage and/or loss of no more than 100 square inches of topcoat
paint for each control surface/trim assembly without rechecking the weight or static balance.

A. Procedure
(1) The rudder condition is to include both tabs, upper tab connecting rods, tab connecting rod fairings
and all static wicks (Ref. Figure 5 (Sheet 1 of 2)).

NOTE: The lower tab connecting rods are left on the airplane.

(2) The upper tab connecting rods must be disconnected at the hinge link but left in situ attached to
the tab, and both tabs must be held horizontal when balancing. This can be achieved by applying
thin adhesive tape on the upper surface from the rudder to the tab skin.

(3) Support the rudder at the two hinge links from the chord line horizontal so that it pivots freely.

(4) Using a spring balance apply a load of between 0.88 lb (14oz) and 1.13 lb (18oz) (0.40 kg and
0.51 kg) vertically downwards (Ref. Figure 5 (Sheet 2 of 2)) at point A, Section ‘E-E’.

NOTE: Point A is at the intersection of the rivet lines along the lower tab trailing edge spoiler and
tab center hinge rib.
NOTE: If the lower tab connecting rods remain connected to the rudder the balancing load is
between 0.62 lb (10 oz) and 0.88 lb (14oz) (0.28 kg and 0.39 kg).

(5) If the rudder does not balance do a balance weight adjustment as follows:

(a) Remove the lower portion of the leading edge skin and the balance weight from the spar
(Ref. Figure 5 (Sheet 1 of 2)), Section B-B.

(b) Adjust the balance weights to the required total weight using weight 25TR249, 251, 4329/1 or
4329/3.

(c) Temporarily install the balance weights and replace the main balance weight and leading
edge skin.

(d) Do a check of the balance.

(6) When the balance is correct remove the lower portion of the leading edge skin. Lockwire the bolts
that attach the balance weights to the spar.

(7) Install the leading edge skin.

(8) Remove the rudder from its supports and remove the adhesive tape from the tabs.
