History of Structural Steel Recap

• Modern Steel Construction has been

seen since the late 19th century.
• Allows for structures in areas
previously not possible
• A variety to shapes, sizes and
applications exist.

Steel Production Recap
• Steel is an alloy comprised of Iron and Carbon.
• New Steel is produced by combining limestone, iron ore
and coal.
• Liquid iron is extracted into a Basic Oxygen Vessel.
• Billets can be rolled into multiple shapes and sizes to meet
application needs.

Steel Sections in Design
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #1

You are a Cost Manager representing

XYZ client, and have been asked to
perform a quantity take off of a
Structural Steel Plan.
There are 10 W14 X 26 each that are
10’ in Length.
There are 6 W12 X 40, 2 that are 10’
in Length, and 4 that are 12’ in Length
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #1

First, Calculate the total length of the W14 X 26

Members
10 Members X 10’ Each = 100’
Then, Calculate the Total Length of the W12 X 40
Members
6 Members Total
2 Members X 10’ Each = 20’
4 Members X 12’ Each = 48’
Total Length = 68’
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #1

Then, calculate for the weights by grouped

member & calculate connections:
W14 X 26
100’ X 26 Lbs./Ft = 2,600 Lbs.
Calculate Connections: 2600 *1.10 = 2,860
W12 X 40
68 X 40 Lbs./Ft. = 2,720 Lbs.
Calculate Connections: 2720 *1.10 = 2,992
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #1

Finally, convert Lbs. into Tonnage

W14 X 26
2,860 / 2000 = 1.43 Ton
W12 X 40
2,992 / 2000 = 1.50 Ton
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #1

Description Qty. Unit

W14 X 26 1.43 Ton
W12 X 40 1.50 Ton
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #2

You are a contractor that has been given a set of

construction documents, and have been asked to
quantify the following conditions:
There are (10) Rows Steel of 16K2 Joists that will
be a total of 135 feet in length each
There are (10) Rows of W27 X 114 that will be a
total of 155 feet in length each
18 Ga. Metal Decking will be used to support the
future concrete floor.
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #2

First, calculate the total weight of the

steel beams.
W27 X 114
10 X 155’ = 1,550 Linear Feet
1,550 X 114 = 176,700 Lbs.
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #2

Next, Calculate the weight of the

Joists
16K2
10 X 135’ = 1,350 Linear Feet
We must now refer to the table
previously used to determine the
weight per linear foot type 16K2 Joist.
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #2

Joist 16K2 16K3 16K4 16K5

Designation
Depth (In.) 16 16 16 16

Approx. 5.5 lbs. 6.3 lbs. 7.0 lbs. 7.5 lbs.

Weight
(Lbs./Ft.)
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #2

Next, Solve for total Weight based on

joist linear footage:
1,350 X 5.5 = 7,425 Lbs.
Next, solve for all structural steel
connections:
176,700 Lbs. X 1.10 = 194,370 Lbs.
7,425 Lbs. X 1.10 = 8,167.5 Lbs.
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #2

Next, convert Structural Steel Lbs. to

Tonnage:
W27 X 114
194,370 Lbs. / 2000 = 97.19 Ton
16K2
8,167.5 Lbs. / 2000 = 4.08 Ton
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #2

Finally, quantify the area of the floor

plan to capture the steel decking:
135’ X 155’ = 20,925 SF
Structural Steel Takeoff - Example #2

Description Qty. Unit

W27 X 114 97.19 Ton
Joist 16K2 4.08 Ton
18 Ga. Metal Deck 20,925 SF
