The Vietnam War was a war that took place between 1955 and 1975 between the

Republic of Vietnam with its US allies and the communist guerrillas of the National Front
for the liberation of Vietnam together with the military support of China, North Korea,
Cuba, and the Soviet Union. This war lasted 20 years, exacting a high price on human lives,
reaching 3,250,000 deaths and 2,070,000 wounded.

The Vietnam War marked one of the most complex experiences for the United States in
the 20th century, it was the costliest conflict between South Vietnam and its allies against
the communist side of North Vietnam.

This was one of the worst wars for the United States since it was the only one they lost
because it took place in the open field and they did not know how to develop strategies
for this type of war.

After the entry of the United States, in 1950, into the conflict with the main objective of
establishing communism in Europe, this war had a greater impact when the communist
leader Ho Chin Minh took the position in North Vietnam. The United States helped South
Vietnam with money, troops, and weapons, while China, Cuba, and the Soviet Union sent
North Vietnam arms and military advice.

BIRTH OF VIETCONG
The name Vietcong derives from the Viet Nam Cong San (Vietnamese communists) Since
the 1960s most of its members were North Vietnamese, The Vietcong were characterized
by their guerrilla actions. Most of the civilians led a double life, generally engaged in
agriculture, however, they were also guerrillas who operated in the villages closest to the
U.S. center of operations using tunnels and so-called booby traps as tactics to terrorize the
Americans. As for the source of financing and supplying the troops, the Vietcong collected
taxes from civilians in the villages and, at the same time, ensured the supply of food and
weapons for their military units.

TET OFFENSIVES: Strategies that weakened the Americans

In the jungles of South Vietnam, there was one of the bloodiest wars in history. North
Vietnam was losing and defended with cannons, corpse traps, and minefields. The United
States responded with rifles, machine guns, spears, and chemical weapons; the North
Vietnamese offensive consisted of proposing peace negotiations. Both agreed days of
truce for the tet festival during the Vietnamese New Year, months before the North
Vietnamese infiltrated more than 8,000 soldiers through the urban areas of South
Vietnam, in the early morning of January 30 during the celebration, the North Vietnamese
attacked the main bases of those in the south, this was the first war broadcast on
television with uncensored images. On January 27, 1973, the United States government
signed the Paris Peace Accords, which established the end of hostilities, the withdrawal of
all foreign forces from Indochina and the progressive reunification of the country without
outside intervention. The war between the two Vietnamese sides continued in 1974 and
on July 2, 1976, the country was reunified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
