Soviet Union

To talk about the Soviet Union, we need to know about its context. The Soviet Union or
also known as USSR was a federation of countries that shared a common ideology,
communism. This Union existed between 1922 and 1991, as well as being located in what
we know today as Russia and some of the surrounding countries.

After the Russian revolution in 1917, which provoked a civil war and a brief transition
government, the Bolsheviks, the most radical communists led by Vladimir Lenin, took
power.

Thus, at the end of the civil war, with the Communists as victors, the Union of Soviet
Socialist Republics was created in 1922, of which Ukraine, Belarus, and Transcaucasia
were part.

After this Lenin died in 1924 and Josef Stalin took over and ruled the USSR with an iron
fist until his death in 1953.

Now, speaking of technology and science, and how the Soviet Union implemented them
we can see different aspects in which these situations occurred, the first and most relevant
in the technological field, was the creation and implementation of the Sputnik project,
which was the first artificial satellite of the Earth.

Another clear observation focused on science is the implementation of different actions by

the Soviet Union with a clear objective, to fulfill an ideological objective without paying
attention to the repercussions, this methodology is also known as Lysenkoism, and some
of the cases that may come to mind are:

The manipulation of information regarding the number of murders that occurred in the
Soviet Union era and the atrocious ways in which they occurred, to the creation of
weapons of mass destruction, which were to be implemented in the not-too-distant future;
these weapons were: Nuclear Technology, construction of rockets and long-range
missiles, which in part were based on the technology already mentioned above, the
Sputnik.

In retrospect, too many people were affected in different ways, with the creation and
implementation of both technological and scientific aspects, the clear results resulted in
the death of hundreds of thousands of people, innocent people who were affected or
sickened by nuclear contamination, hundreds of families who lost their loved ones, etc…
