DEMETER
DEMETER Demeter was one of the original twelve
olympians from the ancient greek. She is
known as the goddess of the agriculture, grain,
bred and seasons. Demeter was depicted as a
mature woman, often wearing a crown and
bearing sheaves of wheat or a cornucopia, and
a torch.

the Titans and the beginning of the
Olympian gods.

DEMETER’S FAMILY: Persephone
Persefone is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus.
Mother and daughter had a very close relationship
and they were often depicted together.
The most important mythology surrounding
Demeter was that of the story of the kidnapping of
her daughter Persephone.
This myth explained how the seasons were created.
ELEUSIS AND
THE ELEUSINIAN
MYSTERIES
The sanctuary at Eleusis dedicated to
the goddess and her daughter
Persephone, as well as the Eleusinian
mysteries practiced there, along with
the idea that Demeter would protect
her worshipers in the afterlife.
MEDUSA
MEDUSA
Medusa, in Greek mythology, the most
famous of the monster figures known
as Gorgons. She was depicted as a
female creature with bronze hands
and gold wings, having a head of hair
consisting of snakes. Her face was so
hideous and her gaze so sharp that the
mere sight of her was enough to turn a
man into a statue of stone.
MEDUSA’S
HISTORY AND
FAMILY
Medusa was a gorgon and a exception, because she was
the only mortal in her family. She was the daughter of
Phorcys and Ceto and she had two gorgon sisters.

Poseidon took an interest in her, and raped Medusa in

one of the temples of Athena.

Athena was enraged and she cursed Medusa for

betraying her. The goddess made sure that that no one
would be able to look her again and turned her into the
monster.
The hero Perseus, son of Zeus, was
MEDUSA’S
sent to kill Medusa.
The hero outsmarted Medusa by using
Athena’s shield so he could see
DEATH
Medusa in the reflection and not
directly to her eyes.
This is how he was able to cut off her
head, the only way of killing the
gorgon.
Then, he gave Medusa’s head as a gift
to Athena. The goddess also created a
two mixtures with her blood, one a
poison and the other a cure-all.
PEGASUS CHRYSAOR
MEDUSA IN
OUR SOCIETY
Medusa suffered many abuses and rapes as
many women suffer in our society. The story
is sad, heartbreaking and tragic but also
shows hope and strength.
That is why women who have suffered some
type of harassment or rape get tattooed
Medusa.
