MD77HR
4 DESCRIPTION
The MD77HR is a rotating dial Compass Heading Repeater. It is designed to display Ship’s
heading as part of a Gyro-Compass or Transmitting Magnetic Compass System, receiving data
via a NMEA 0183 digital transmission.
The MD77HR has a dial of 118 mm diameter marked in 1 degree increments with numeric values
every 10 degrees plus cardinal and inter-cardinal markers. The dial rotates one revolution for 360
degrees. A lubber-line is provided to allow the heading indicated by the dial to be read accurately.
The dial is back-lit with a red tint for easy reading. The illumination is dimmable to allow the
repeater to be viewed in any lighting condition from full sunlight to total darkness. The
illumination level is adjustable down to zero so that night vision is not affected. Dimming can be
controlled either by the front panel push buttons or by a remote electrical dimmer connection.
The MD77HR is provided with an interface panel with indicator LEDs showing equipment status
and a keypad giving the user control of illumination level and test functions.
The MD77HR gives indication of Heading Type (True or Magnetic) and indication of loss of valid
data condition.
Constructed in a robust aluminium enclosure and finished in Jet Black (RAL9005) Fine-texture
Powder Coat, the MD77HR is designed to complement existing marine navigation equipment.
Supplied for panel mounting as standard, an optional adjustable bulkhead mounting bracket is
available. Compact and rugged, the MD77HR offers a compact Heading Repeater solution for
locations where available space is limited.
The MD77HR Heading Repeater from Marine Data, designed to be easy to install and simple to
maintain.

8
MD77HR
5 PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The MD77HR accepts serial azimuth data from a Gyro-Compass or Transmitting Magnetic
Compass (TMC) in digital format using standard NMEA 0183 (IEC61162-1) True or Magnetic
sentences. The input is processed by electronic circuitry contained within the Repeater enclosure,
powered from 18 V to 32 V dc derived from the ship’s supply. Power consumption is low; typically
less than 4 watts.
An embedded micro-controller processes the received heading information and in turn drives a
stepper-motor connected to the dial. On application of power, the dial is rotated to align to a zero
reference position controlled by an optical switch. Subsequently, on reception of valid data, the
dial is driven to display the received heading. When updated heading information is transmitted
to the Repeater, the dial will then follow this new heading.
Sophisticated firmware embedded in the micro-controller monitors the received heading, user
controls and other control signals and provides control of dial, illumination and indicators.
Suppression circuitry and opto-isolation are used to provide protection for over-voltage and
reverse polarity as well as compliance with EMC and data transmission standards.

11.2 Normal Operation
In normal operation, the True Heading indicator (blue, BU) and Magnetic Heading (yellow, YE)
indicator are used to show the type of heading displayed.

• If True Heading is being displayed then the True Heading Indicator will be illuminated.

• If Magnetic Heading is being displayed the Magnetic Heading Indicator will be illuminated.

The Illumination Level of the Dial, Pointer and Indicators are adjusted using the buttons.

Pressing the button will increase the illumination level by one step; holding the button will
slowly increase the illumination to maximum.

Pressing the button will decrease the illumination level by one step; holding the button will
slowly decrease the illumination to minimum.
At the minimum illumination level the dial illumination is fully extinguished. However, active
indicators remain lit at a very low level to allow location of the panel controls in total darkness.

17
MD77HR
11.3 Indication: Loss of Data
If no data is received for more than 3 seconds then a No Data condition is indicated. To indicate
a No Data error the dial illumination will flash and the dial will oscillate approximately +35° and -
35° about the last valid heading received. The red alert indication is set.

The Loss of Data indication can be acknowledged by pressing the button for 0.5 seconds or
more. When the indication is acknowledged, the dial will stop rotating and return to the 000°
position. Both True and Magnetic indicators will be illuminated.
A single audible 'beep' will be given on a change of status of the loss of data indication. i.e. when
loss of data is detected, when loss of data indication is acknowledges by the operator or when
data is re-gained when loss of data is indicated.

11.4 Automatic Baud Rate Detection

If valid data is not received and a No Data indication is given, then the MD77HR will scan all
available Baud rates to look for valid data at an alternative baud rate. If valid data is discovered
which corresponding to the list of acceptable data sentences, then the new Baud rate will be
stored and used for future data reception. With this feature there is no requirement to pre-select
a Baud rate for data transmission.

11.5 Heading Type Selection

The type of Heading displayed dependings on the available data. True Heading is displayed if
available and Magnetic Heading will be displayed if data is available for Magnetic but not available
for True.

11.6 Test Function

A Test Function is provided to give confirmation of the correct operation of the MD77HR electro-
mechanical arrangement and illumination.

To activate the Test Function, press and hold both buttons for 3 seconds until the Test
Function starts. During the test function, the dial will rotate to re-align to 000° and the illumination
and indicator LEDs will flash. An audible beep will be given when the test function is completed
and normal operation will resume and the dial will return to displaying the received heading.
The length of time taken by the Test Function will depend on the present heading. Any
acknowledged Loss of Data indication will be re-activated by the test function.
