2.5.7. POWER MANAGEMENT

The VAS 6154 has two shutdown stages.

Shutdown stage 1: Power-saving mode

If no communication takes place with the diagnostic unit or vehicle (end of the diagnosis) for 15 minutes
(default value), the VAS 6154 switches to shutdown stage 1. Once communication is re-established, the
VAS 6154 switches back to normal operation.

Shutdown stage 2: Automatic shutdown

If no communication takes place with the diagnostic unit or vehicle (end of the diagnosis) for 30 minutes
(default value), the device shuts down. The VAS 6154 can be switched back on by switching the ignition on/off
(terminal 15). This restarts the VAS 6154. A restart is also performed if the VAS 6154 is disconnected from the
power supply and then reconnected. It can then take up to one minute to start the VAS 6154.

The VAS 6154 does not switch to shutdown level 2 if it is being operated with
a USB module.

After logging on as administrator (see 2.5.11), you can call up information in the web interface or configure the
scheduled shutdown of the diagnosis interface. The POWER MANAGEMENT tab is not displayed if you do not
have administrator access.

2.5.8.1 EVALUATING THE WLAN SELF-TEST

If the WLAN test fails, first check whether the MAC

address of the WLAN module has been correctly
read out. If the entry for "VAS6154 MAC" is empty or
has the value "00:00:00:00:00:00" or
"FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF", or if the warning "WLAN
device is defect or not connected" is displayed, there Illustration 61) Screenshot: Web interface,
Docking station - results of self-test
is a problem with the WLAN module.

Replace the WLAN module with another WLAN module (see Chapter 2.7.1) and perform the test again.

If the entry for "VAS6154 MAC" is now plausible, the WLAN module is defective. If the entry "VAS6154 MAC"
is still not plausible, then the VAS 6154 is defective. Please contact your service partner in both cases.

If the WLAN interface test fails in all the other areas, there is most probably a configuration problem with the
VAS 6154, diagnostic unit or your WLAN infrastructure. Please contact the person in your company who is
responsible for solving these types of issues (e.g. network administrator).

2.5.8.2 EVALUATING THE ONBOARD INTERFACE SELF-TEST

Should the onboard interface test fail, if possible replace the docking station with a different one and run the
test again using the same VAS 6154.

If the test still fails, then the VAS 6154 is defective. If the test is completed successfully, the docking station is
defective. Please contact your service partner in both cases.

A successfully completed full test or part of the test is indicated by

"Successful" in the text box; a failed full test or part of the test is indicated by
"Fail"
If part of a test fails, then the complete Test result has failed as well.

2.6 USING MULTIPLE VAS 6154 UNITS IN A NETWORK

More than one VAS 6154 can be integrated in a network infrastructure. This is only possible when using
WLAN or LAN modules. The network settings for a WLAN connection are described in Chapter 2.5.6.2. The
LAN settings are explained in Chapter 2.5.6.4.

2.7 SWAPPING MODULES

The module must not be swapped while it is in operation. Removing a module while the VAS 6154 is plugged
into the vehicle diagnostic socket or the docking station will cause a malfunction.

This error is indicated by the flashing green LED. A corresponding error code is written to the User log. The
VAS 6154 has to be restarted after swapping the module. To do this, remove the VAS 6154 from the vehicle
diagnostic socket or the docking station and plug it in again after approx. 5 seconds.

Swapping a module while an application is running will cause the application

to terminate. In this case, the VAS 6154 has to be restarted.
The VAS 6154 has to be configured for the respective module. If the new
module has not yet been configured, you have to configure it in the docking
station.

2.7.1. MECHANICAL SWAPPING

The various interface modules can be swapped easily and without any tools.

2.7.1.1 ATTACHING A MODULE

A module can only be plugged into the diagnosis interface in one position, which is determined by the location
of the socket and connector of the Mini-USB port.

The module is pressed down onto the diagnosis interface until it engages with a clearly audible click. The
modules must always be attached without any force, otherwise you could damage the snap lugs or the
diagnosis interface.

A module with damaged snap lugs must not be used.

2.9 SOFTWARE UPDATE

When an update for the VAS 6154 basis system is available in ODIS, it starts automatically when a connection
is established between the diagnostic unit and the VAS 6154. The VAS 6154 does not need to be inserted in
the docking station for the update.

Do not disconnect the VAS 6154 from the diagnostic unit or the USB
connection at any time during the update process.

The update can take up to 3 minutes and is indicated on the VAS 6154
by the row of LEDs. The LEDs green, blue, orange and red light up one
after the other in ascending order. This animation symbolizes the
VAS 6154 being 'filled' with software.

Illustration 72) Software

2.10 FACTORY SETTINGS

The VAS 6154 unit is reset to its factory settings during the boot process.

For this purpose, the docking station must be connected to the diagnostic device (see
Chapter 2.3).

To reset the VAS 6154 to the factory settings, insert it into the docking station (while
keeping the VAS 6154 button pressed for about 10 seconds) until the internal buzzer
emits an acoustic signal. Illustration 74) Factory

During the reset procedure, the LEDs flash in descending order, during which all the
LEDs are first switched on, and are then switched off one after the other from red
through to green. This animation symbolizes the removal of the changed settings from the diagnosis interface.

All dynamic changes to the system are irretrievably lost. The initial
parameters (factory settings) are now applied. The attached WLAN module is
taught automatically for one time only.

5.2.3. REQUIRED FIREWALL RULES FOR OPERATING THE VAS 6154

The following firewall rules have to be set up on the diagnostic unit or in the network infrastructure to ensure
that the VAS 6154 functions properly:

• TCP port 4500 (inbound, outbound) {required for diagnosis}

• Multicast to address 239.255.1.1, port 6154 (inbound, outbound) {required for device management}
• Multicast to address 239.255.1.2, port 6154 (inbound, outbound) {required for device management}
• TCP port 6154 (inbound, outbound) {required for device management}

IP address ranges configured for the VAS 6154 (i.e. 192.168.1.x,

192.168.13.x, 192.168.61.x) must not be routed via a proxy server.

5.2.4. LOCALIZING THE VAS 6154 USING ITS HOSTNAME

Normally, the device management automatically localizes a VAS 6154 in a network. However, in some
networks this mechanism does not function properly due to administrative restrictions.

In such a case, the device management on the diagnostic device must be configured for the VAS 6154 to be
able reach via the network host name (see Chapter 2.5.3.3).

Changes are made on the diagnostic unit to the device management configuration file
"VAS6154-Static-Devices.ini" for this configuration.

The configuration file can be found here after the installation:

C:\ProgramData\I+ME Actia GmbH\VAS6154 Driver\VAS6154-Static-Devices.ini

Add a new section in the file. Use the hostname entered in Identification, Chapter 2.5.3.3, as the section
name.

If the device's IP address is known and has been permanently defined, this can also be optionally added. This
enables the VAS 6154 to be localizes significantly more quickly.
