S ometimes you can’t help but look at your
life in wonder. And ever-candid Sangita
Patel is the first to admit it, particularly when
it comes to being a mom.
“It’s just so surreal to me that I have two kids!”

says with a laugh, reflecting proudly on the
family she’s built with her husband of 20 years,
radiologist Samir “Sam” Patel, 50. Together,
the pair share two daughters, who aren’t little
anymore: Ava, 17, and Shyla, 14. And Sangita
beams when she muses on the evolution of her
bond with the girls.
Now that they’re older, she feels “not like their
best friend, exactly” – more like their equal.
“We’re in this space now where we’re teaching
each other,” she explains. “I’m learning from
them just as much as they are from me.”

“Just that they’re a part of my life,” she says.
That, and the fact that she can “be there
for them as a mentor and say, ‘I’m here to
help you become the person you want to
be.’ That’s so precious to me.”

‘I’LL DO WHATEVER I HAVE TO DO’

As a mentor, Sangita has passed along some
of her best qualities to her children, includ-
ing her upbeat sense of humour (“I’m the
crazy mom and they goof around a lot, just
like me,” she says) and her ability to “find joy
in everything” – two traits that proved espe-
cially helpful to the Toronto native when
she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
“It’s still very raw for me right now,” she
tells us of her health journey, which began
last March, when she found a lump on her
throat. “My husband said to me, ‘Just go to
the doctor and see what they say.’ I ended
up getting an ultrasound, and then a biopsy
that came back as benign. I was like, ‘OK,
I’m fine. I’m in the clear.’”
The story didn’t end there, though. As
the mass continued to grow, Sangita – on
the advice of her doctor – had half of her

Thank you for inviting us into your home! It
has such a bright and modern feel to it. What
inspired the design? This house really was a
love project for my husband. He wanted to
do a modern style with a Scandinavian look
to it, bringing in organic, natural materials.
When you walk inside, it looks like there’s a
tree floating in the house, and they designed
it that way to make you feel like you’re a part
of nature. I think this is a very serene and
calm house, and that’s what we wanted. We
wanted our kids to come home and feel re-
laxed. And some of the stuff we’ve done is
insane. Like if you see the stairs, I don’t even
know how they did the engineering behind
that! And the big windows … these are the
things we wanted. There’s just such a beautiful
vibe to this house.
One of the coolest rooms is arguably your
home gym. As someone who prioritizes fit-
ness, was that space especially important to
you? When we built this house, the first
room that I cared about was the gym. I was
like, “I don’t want to go to a fitness centre. I
want to be able to do my workouts here, on
my own time, in my own space.” And I love it.

How have you taught your girls the import-

ance of a healthy lifestyle? When my kids
were younger, a lot of parents would say,
“Don’t feed this to your kids, don’t give them

how to make Indian food. But because there’s
diabetes in our family, I realized that I need-
ed to figure out ways to make it healthier.
Indian food is, generally, fairly healthy be-
cause there are a lot of vegetables and spices.
But there are also the oils, fats and creams. So
I thought, “What are some ingredients I can
use to adjust it?” One of the dishes I worked
on for years was this healthy butter chicken
recipe. I would say if you try any of the recipes
I’ve posted on Instagram, let it be my butter
chicken sauce!

Aside from cooking, what are some other
ways you celebrate your South Asian heritage
at home? One of the things I’ve learned is
that from my generation to my kids’ genera-
tion, there isn’t a real transfer of culture and
tradition – I think that’s been lost. With my
parents, they got it from their parents, who
[were fully immersed in their culture]. But
when it came to my parents’ transfer of cul-
ture to me, it was a bit broken. You know, we
lived in Canada and we weren’t isolated in
a place where we always had that culture in
front of us. So it’s really important to me
that I bring it to the table with my kids. We
celebrate all the big Hindu holidays at our
house – Holi, Diwali. And when they were
younger, I would watch Bollywood movies
with them and listen to Bollywood music –
anything that would help me show them how
rich this culture is.
How do you enjoy spending your time these
days? The way I live life is I find joy in every-
thing I do. So it’s really those moments where

so grateful to have this extra time with them.

Can you share the story of how you and your husband met?
I picked him up at a club. [Laughs] I was out with a bunch of
girlfriends, and it was one of those nights where we were just
having a good time. Then we met, and there was just some-
thing about him. He’s from Alberta, so he was leaving to go
back to Alberta two days after. This was 26 years ago, when
there were no cellphones or social media. And I remember
the first time he came back to Toronto to visit me after a few
months of just talking on the phone. I hadn’t seen him since
we first met, so I didn’t know how it was going to go. But he
walked out [of the airport] with a box of cookies that he had
baked for me and I was like, “He’s the one, he’s the one!”
We had a long-distance relationship for a year before he

ing … and we got married. We’re still in
our honeymoon phase – I still check him
out! [Laughs] He’s my best friend. He’s also
one of the most amazing dads in the world.
He’s so hands-on and so present. And
when I found out I had cancer and had to
have surgery, he was there to be the strong
one while I went through that process.

You were brave to share your cancer diag-

nosis on social media. Why did you want
to do that? One of the things that’s so
great is that I’ve created this incredible
community that I can trust on my social
media. I have this beautiful group of people
who really want to have a conversation and
really help each other out. I was nervous
about sharing it, but the response was so
supportive – especially because women don’t
talk about thyroid cancer enough. We talk

So many of our readers know you from your time
on ETC. But many of them might not know that,
before becoming a reporter, you were an engineer.
How did you get into the entertainment industry?
It’s funny, when I applied for university, I applied as
an engineer and I also applied as a journalist. And
my dad was like, “Well, where are you going to make
money?” So I became an electrical engineer. [Laughs]
But at nighttime, I would volunteer for a show called
Toronto Living, and I loved it! I had two different
lives – I would do engineering during the day, then
journalism at night. And when my first daughter
was about a year old, I thought, “I’m going to take a
risk and leave engineering and see if I can do this
journalism thing full-time.” So I did The Weather
Network, which was the perfect mix of science and
television for me. Then I just worked my way up. I
went to Citytv – where I did Breakfast Television and
CityNews Weekend – before I got picked up at Entertain-
ment Tonight Canada, thinking I’d be there for six
months, which led to 10 years. Isn’t it crazy? You just
never know where you’re going to end up.

Do you remember your first major celebrity inter-

view? It was when I was volunteering for Toronto
Living, and I was covering a red carpet with Brad
Pitt. At the time, Angelina Jolie was pregnant, and
I was pregnant. I was probably eight months along,
so I was showing. As Brad Pitt gets out of his car and

like, “Brad Pitt is holding my hand ...” That
was an insane moment. And the only rea-
son he stopped was because I yelled out this
crazy thing.
What does your next chapter look like?
You know, sometimes you’re pushed in a
direction that forces you to make changes.
ET Canada was amazing. But [when it ended]
it pushed me to take the next step. So now
I’m really putting my eye on the prize. I’m
ready to push my brand into the U.S. and
see what happens there. It’s scary, but it’s
also fun and exhilarating. I don’t know if
you can tell, but I’m very ambitious. [Laughs]
Many years ago, a man said to me, “You’re
being too ambitious.” And I was like, “Would
you ever say that to a man? Probably not.” And
I held on to that. Because, you know what?
I’m allowed to be ambitious. I’m allowed to
try this and try that. And that’s what I’m
doing right now. [Smiles]

ON HIS ‘ACCIDENTAL’ ACTING CAREER, ROYAL
ENCOUNTER AND IDYLLIC LIFE WITH WIFE JILLIE
H e’s been gracing our screens for nearly half a century,
but, unbelievably, Tom Selleck didn’t always have
dreams of being an actor. In fact, he tells us, the mere
thought of performing for an audience was once enough
to send him into a cold sweat.
“Growing up, I was usually the shy kid who broke out
in a rash if he had to give a speech in class,” the longtime
TV star, 79 – who rose to fame in the early ’80s on the
Hawaii-based crime drama Magnum P.I. –
confesses to Hello! Canada. His true child-
hood ambition, he says, was to become a
professional baseball player. “Or, when I
was very little, I probably wanted to be a
fireman,” he adds with a laugh.
It wasn’t until he got to college that Tom – a
business major – was introduced to acting
while taking an “easy A” American theatre his-
tory class to improve his grade point average.
To his complete and utter surprise, the pro-
fessor ended up giving him the name of an
agent after suggesting that he’d be a “good
type for commercials.” And the rest is history.
“It was a total accident,” he says, while
looking back on his storied career, which he details in his
new memoir. “It was serendipitous and fortuitous, and
that’s why I named the book You Never Know. Because
fate just kind of stepped in and gave me an opportunity.”
DANCING WITH PRINCESS DIANA
Although the life of an actor isn’t one he ever pictured for
himself, Tom feels lucky. “I’ve come to realize this is
where I belong,” says the star, who’s found joy in playing
myriad characters over the years, including Courteney
Cox’s love interest on the beloved sitcom Friends, along
with his role as a New York City cop in the police proced-
ural Blue Bloods (currently in its 14th and final season).
These days, Tom’s main priority
is his family, which includes his
wife, Jillie (R), and their daughter,
Hannah, an ‘accomplished
equestrian show jumper.’

most dear. Like the time he took close pal Carol Burnett
to his first-ever Academy Awards in 1983. Or when he
danced with Princess Diana at a White House state dinner

in 1985 (yes, the same one that saw her boogie with John
Travolta). “Thank goodness it was a slow number,” Tom
jokes in his memoir. “Princess Diana was lovely. I gotta
say she seemed to be having the time of her life.”
These days, the Michigan-born star feels
most at peace spending time on his 63-acre
ranch in Ventura County, Calif., where he
lives with his wife, fellow actress Jillie Mack.
“She’s just full of energy and so much fun,”
he tells us of Jillie, 66, with whom he shares
35-year-old daughter Hannah. (He also has
an adopted son, Kevin, 58, with ex-wife
Jacqueline Ray.) “She’s a great person to
wake up next to every day.”
Here, sharing details of his new memoir
with Hello! Canada, Tom talks family life,
famous friends and how he and Jillie pulled
off their secret wedding at an open-all-hours
chapel near Lake Tahoe, Nev.
Congratulations on the memoir, Tom! Why did feel
like this was the right time to look back on your years
in Hollywood? I don’t know whether it was the right
time. [Laughs] I guess we’ll find out! I had been asked
in the past, but I always said, “Look, I’m still working
and I don’t plan on quitting anytime soon.” My publicist
and dear friend kept bugging me, though, so I finally
started writing it about four years ago. I don’t really
like computers, so I wrote it, pen in hand, on a notepad.
You speak very highly of your parents in the book. How
much do you credit them for being the person you are
today? I credit my parents for most of it. They always
kept me in line. You know, if I came home from filming
Magnum P.I. in Hawaii full of myself, I was going to get
cut down to size pretty quick in that family. [Laughs]
You also share stories of your friend Carol Burnett, who
guest-starred on Magnum P.I. How would you describe
your friendship now? It’s too distant. But I had a phone
call with her fairly recently and it was nice because,
when she picked up the phone, she was just Carol. I told
her I was embarrassed I hadn’t talked to her in a while
and she just said, “Call me anytime.” She’s just such a
lovely person, and she’s exactly who you think she might
be. What you see is what you get with Carol.
Speaking of wonderful women, you’ll be celebrating
37 years of marriage with Jillie in August. What makes
you two work so well together? We both come from

similar backgrounds. Jillie is from a
small town in England, and I grew up
in a little tract house in the valley. But
we’ve also come from the same busi-
ness and we have very similar philoso-
phies about the work. I think that, and
the fact that Jillie’s got such a wonder-
ful sense of humour and joy for life.
Every day is a new day with her.

You managed to keep your marriage a

secret from the public for a month
after tying the knot in 1987. Why did
you hide it? When I first got into the
industry, there was really no electronic
media – there was no Entertainment
Tonight at the start of Magnum. And
when things like that started explod-
ing, it was pretty hard to keep any-
thing a secret. But, you know, it was
our time, and we just didn’t feel com-
fortable [sharing it]. Even if we were
to get married today, I wouldn’t be
giving any media outlets pictures. We
do have wedding pictures, though –
17 Polaroids [kept safe in a box].

Finally, what is bringing you joy at this

stage of your life? As much as I love
filming Blue Bloods, I commute. I have
about two-and-a-half weeks in New
York and about 10 days in California,
so it always makes me feel joyful to
come home. I don’t want to travel. I
don’t want to do anything. I just want
to come home to our ranch and see
Jillie and our dogs [three Cavalier
King Charles spaniels and a four-
year-old English setter]. I know that
isn’t a big elaborate thing, but that’s
what makes me happy.

proceedings on a palace balcony, young Prince Julian
of Sweden held his hands over his ears and made a
series of mischievous faces as he was photographed
at his grandfather King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 78th
birthday celebrations last month.
The three-year-old effortlessly stole the show at
Stockholm’s Royal Palace, alongside his family,

Julian – the youngest of the king and Queen

“I’m going to tell a joke, which is Charlotte’s
favourite joke at the moment, which she tells
me all the time,” said the prince, smiling.
“Knock knock,” he began.
“Who’s there?” asked the students.
“Interrupting cow,” replied William.
As soon as the youngsters started to say,
“Interrupting cow who?” he interrupted with
“Moooo!” making them all laugh.
“That’s a joke I hear a lot at the moment
at home,” he told them. “That’s the great-
est one I could think of. It’s clean and it’s
broadcastable.”

Inside, showing that his wife, the Princess
of Wales, is never far from his mind, William
told staff, “I am sorry Catherine can’t be
here as well. She would have loved to.”
It was with Kate – and his brother, Prince
Harry – that he founded the Royal Founda-
tion’s Heads Together campaign for mental
health awareness back in 2016.
“When we first started talking about
mental health, not one celebrity wanted to

earlier this year, when Thomas Kingston,
the husband of William’s cousin Lady

Following the royal visit, Freddie said, “I was
so shocked. It was crazy. I was not expecting
him to walk down the [school driveway]. It
means so much to me that he has recog-
nized what we are doing.”
William’s kindness – particularly in light
chatting with Alfie Hawkeswood, whose
mother, Sue, set up the six-acre farm to
nurture children’s mental health. William
told her that he finds the deep breathing
of horses relaxing. “I used to have a horse,
and I would lie down next to it.”
A few days later, the prince opened James’
Place, a new centre in Newcastle dedicated
to offering support to men experiencing
suicidal crises. Asked about the well-being
of Kate and the children, he briefly but re-

something about it.”

of his wife and father battling cancer – was assuringly responded, “All doing well.”

to provide mental health support and
holiday activities to young people.
Grooming a guinea pig named Snow-
flake, he said, “We’ve got guinea pigs at
home and they’re not like this. I spend
my life cleaning out the guinea pig cage
because the children forget to do it.”

R adiating joy just hours after saying “I do,” Prince
William and Kate are the picture of newlywed
bliss in a previously unseen portrait.
The Prince and Princess of Wales released the
black-and-white photograph to mark their 13th
wedding anniversary – a welcome surprise for fans
who have been desperate for reassurance as Kate
continues her preventive treatment for cancer.
“13 years ago today!” read the caption.
In the romantic photo, William has swapped his
red Irish Guards tunic – worn for the Westminster
Abbey ceremony – for his Blues and Royals black
frock coat (which he would go on to wear as best man
at the 2018 wedding of his brother, Prince Harry).
The bride, meanwhile, exudes happiness, smiling
directly at the camera in her bespoke Alexander
McQueen wedding dress and Cartier Halo tiara
(borrowed from Elizabeth II) as the groom gently

The portrait was taken by Millie Pilkington (who has

Charlotte and Prince Louis) at Buckingham Palace,
where the newlyweds had their wedding breakfast
– a lunchtime reception hosted by the late Queen for
around 650 of their 1,900 guests.
A second, more intimate party that evening saw
pop star Ellie Goulding perform in the Throne
Room, which was transformed into a nightclub,
with fireworks lighting up the night.
In between the two celebrations, the royal bride
and groom made the short drive down The Mall to
Clarence House to change for the evening event,
the bride opting for a strapless white satin dress,

William was at the wheel of his father’s blue
Aston Martin, decorated by his brother with
streamers, a jokey L-plate (denoting “learner
driver”), balloons with the initials W and C (for
William and Catherine, of course) and a custom
JU5T WED licence plate. Kate couldn’t resist let-
ting out a whoop as she and William began their
journey together as husband and wife.
And what a journey it has been. But through it all,
they’ve been there for each other. As Kate noted
in March, when revealing her cancer diagnosis,
“Having William by my side is a great source of
comfort and reassurance.” And the couple’s re-
lease of this poignant photo signifies that their
bond is unbreakable – in sickness and in health.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s only daughter
looks relaxed and confident as she leans against a fence
entwined with pink blooms at the family’s Windsor
home, Adelaide Cottage. The plant is an “Elizabeth”
clematis – a touching nod to her great-grandmother,
the late Queen, whom Charlotte clearly resembles.
The sweet portrait, taken by Princess Kate, was
shared on social media with the message “Happy 9th
Birthday, Princess Charlotte!
“Thank you for all of the kind messages today,” the
couple added in acknowledgment of well-wishes from
royal fans.
With her waist-length blond hair flowing loosely
over a dark red cardigan, wearing a denim miniskirt
and sporting a friendship bracelet on her right wrist,
Charlotte shows she’s entering her preteen years with
poise and grace.
A HISTORIC ARRIVAL
Born on May 2, 2015, weighing 8 lb 3 oz, Princess
Charlotte Elizabeth Diana made history as the first
female child of a future monarch to benefit from the
Perth Agreement, which changed the rules of primo-
geniture to ensure that royal girls do not lose their
place in the line of succession to younger brothers.

“Charlotte wears the trousers in that family in a very
charming way,” says royal insider Ingrid Seward –
and there has been ample evidence over the years.
In 2022, the young princess was seen prompting
her older brother to bow to the coffin of Queen
Elizabeth II at Her late Majesty’s state funeral. She
also took charge of Prince Louis, now 6, en route to
last year’s Trooping the Colour, placing her hand

“Princess Charlotte is very protective of Louis
and is always telling him what to do and what not
to do in very much the same way she used to tell
Prince George,” says Ingrid, author of the upcom-
ing biography My Mother and I: The Inside Story of the
King and Our Late Queen, adding that Charlotte’s
stoic yet outgoing personality will stand her – and
the Royal Family – in good stead.
“I think she will play a role similar to Princess
Anne,” Ingrid tells Hello! “She will be a support for
Prince George in the way that the Princess Royal
has been for King Charles.”

A ROYAL CHARMER
Charlotte proved to be comfortable in the spotlight
from an early age, mastering the art of the royal
wave on tours to Canada and Europe and charming
the crowd outside St. Mary’s Hospital when she ar-
rived to meet newborn Louis in April 2018.

 plenty of time outdoors at Adelaide Cottage (the four-bed-
room home they share in Windsor) and Anmer Hall (their
10-bedroom retreat on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk).
The energetic youngster enjoys ballet, tap, gymnastics,
tennis, rugby and soccer. “Charlotte [is] really good in
goal,” Prince William informed England’s women’s soccer
team, the Lionesses, two years ago, quipping that his
daughter is a “budding star for the future.”
In addition to her athletic pursuits, Charlotte, like her
mom, plays the piano and can carry a tune – a talent revealed
by her proud mom on a visit to a Ukrainian refugee centre
last year. “I heard my daughter singing this morning,”
Kate told a little girl. “It’s a song called ‘Shine Jesus Shine,’
and that made me very happy.”
Both Kate and Charlotte are avid fans of the reality
competition show Strictly Come Dancing (Britain’s equivalent
of Dancing with the Stars), so much so that they paid a
backstage visit (along with Prince Louis) last December –
a secret recently revealed by judge Shirley Ballas.

“They’re beautifully polite children,” she said. “They
had an absolute ball. We have photos, but I didn’t want to
post them. I think it’s more private for [Kate]. I was just
glad she was able to come in and have a great day.”

last May, when she made a striking ap-
pearance in a tiny version of her mom’s
outfit – an ivory silk crepe embroidered
cape dress by Alexander McQueen with
a silver headpiece.
It was one of several occasions of late in
which the young royal has played a more
significant role.
Charlotte and George joined their par-
ents on a Platinum Jubilee visit to Cardiff
in 2022 and, along with Louis, took part in
the Big Help Out at a scout hut in Slough
during the coronation weekend.
More recently, the princess was seen coo-
ing over baby clothes and heard exclaiming,
“Ooh la la!” as she and her siblings joined
Kate to sort donations at a baby bank.
The children’s last public outing was on
Christmas Day, when Charlotte walked to
church, holding her mother’s hand, and
was later seen deep in conversation with
her second cousin Mia Tindall (daughter
of William’s cousin Zara).
She has plenty of playmates, both within
her family and at school – Charlotte attends
Lambrook school near Ascot with her
brothers – and no doubt celebrated her
special day with loved ones.
Charlotte’s birthday will also have given
her parents something joyful to focus on
as the Princess of Wales continues her
treatment for cancer.
Designer Amaia said she was utterly
shocked to hear the news of Kate’s illness.
“I’m heartbroken,” she said. “I think they
are going through hell [and] I hope they
will be back. It’s really personal.”
Ingrid says Charlotte and her siblings
are a “great comfort” to Kate during this
time. “You have to be in the present with
kids. There really isn’t time to worry
about yesterday or tomorrow. They light a
day up.
“They must be uplifting for Kate, and I’m
sure they come home and tell Mummy about
their day. They are a perfect distraction.”
Given the security and stability of her
upbringing by William and Kate, Charlotte
looks set to be a huge asset to the Royal
Family in the future.

H appy birthday, little prince! The Duke and
Duchess of Sussex’s eldest child turned
five on May 6, and there’s no doubt that his
loving parents, two-year-old sister Princess
Lilibet and grandma Doria Ragland marked
the occasion with cake, presents and loads of
cuddles and kisses.
Prince Archie’s special day – which coincided
with the coronation of his grandfather the King
last year – was likely marked in the Sussex’s pre-
ferred low-key fashion at their California home,
perhaps with a few celebrity neighbours on hand.
A PRIVATE LIFE
Though he’s sixth in line to the throne, Archie
has grown up outside Royal Family tradition.
Even his first public appearance at St. George’s
Hall in Windsor Castle in May 2019 marked a

break from custom – with no immediate media
photocall – as it was his parents’ wish for their
son to grow up as a private citizen.
That said, he did spend the first six months
of his life at the Sussexes’ former home, Frog-
more Cottage, on the Windsor estate and
joined Mom and Dad on their royal visit of
South Africa in 2019, when he was just an
infant. It was his first and only official tour.
Before long, Archie was experiencing his first
snow in Canada during Harry and Meghan’s
six-week break on Vancouver Island and then
was California bound as his parents stepped
down as senior royals in 2020.
The duke, 39, and duchess, 42, have since
opted to keep Archie – and his sister – out of
the spotlight and have released few photos of
them. One glimpse of his idyllic childhood in
the enclave of Montecito appeared in the 2022
Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, though,
with Archie shown helping to bake muffins and
tend to their chickens. It’s a place where, as
Harry told Oprah Winfrey in 2021, “We go for
walks as a family and with the dogs – you know,
we go on hikes or go down to the beach.”
According to Meghan, her son “loves being
a big brother.” At Lilibet’s first birthday party
in June 2022 – held while the family were in
the U.K. for his late great-grandmother’s Plat-
inum Jubilee – the adorable tot was seen help-
ing his little sister blow out her candles.
Soon, Lilibet will be three. And her brother?
He’s getting ready for a big change – the tran-
sition from nursery school to kindergarten!
As Harry told Good Morning America in Febru-
ary, “The kids are growing up like all kids do:
very, very fast.”

S he was more than happy to recreate pop
history on the Abbey Road pedestrian
crossing in London, but the Duchess of Edin-
burgh was relieved to hear that she wasn’t
expected to do the same inside the legendary
music studios.
Speaking to guests at a charity reception –
where a pianist had been entertaining
them – Sophie, who looked sensational in
a red dress by Beulah London, joked, “I was
slightly concerned that, when the music
turned up, we were going to have to sing
and that we were going to clear Abbey Road
Studios really quickly.”
The duchess, 59, was at the London venue
to address Orbis Visionaries, a gathering of
staff and supporters of the global blindness-
prevention non-profit group.
As global ambassador for the Internation-
al Agency for the Prevention of Blindness,
she has travelled to India, Bangladesh and
Ethiopia with the organization. Taking to
the stage in the room where the Beatles
had recorded, Sophie spoke from the heart
about the charity’s work around the world.
“To be out in the field and to see what
Orbis is doing on the ground – delivering
services that are truly life-changing for
people, many of whom have been suffering
for years, to give them their lives back – is
absolutely amazing,” she said.
“I had the chance to stand in on an oper-
ation to correct the eyelids. It is amazing
how, in the space of minutes, somebody’s
life is transformed.
“It’s not right that there are so many
people out there living with these condi-
tions, whether it be blinding trachoma or
whether it be from cataracts.”

added that she keeps one of the charity’s

who are volunteering with (or have been
trained by) Orbis.
The stuffed toy – accessorized with a ban-
dage and an eye patch – is given to youngsters
undergoing surgery to provide comfort after
their operations and help them understand
the healing process.
A BEACON OF GOODWILL
Also on the healing front, Sophie spent
time in Ukraine at the end of April, mak-
ing history as the first British royal to visit
the war-torn nation since the conflict with
Russia began in 2022.
Meeting with President Volodymyr Zel-
enskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska, the
group discussed the ongoing issue of conflict-
related sexual violence.
Just one month earlier, Sophie shared a
statement: “We must stand shoulder to shoul-
der with all survivors to secure justice and
holistic redress and ensure that this crime
isn’t an accepted part of conflict.”

W ith a grin and a jubilant wave while hold-

ing a bouquet of flowers in the air, the
King returned to public duties with a touching
display of support for fellow cancer sufferers.
Taking place shortly before the first anniver-
sary of the King’s coronation, the visit to the
Macmillan Cancer Centre at London’s Univer-
sity College Hospital was a world away from the
pomp and splendour of that historic day.
But it was filled with warmth and summed
up how much life has changed for Charles and
his wife, Queen Camilla, in the 12 months since
they were crowned.
It also revealed a new depth of feeling from
the King toward the patients and health-care
workers he has championed for decades.
“He’s always been very sympathetic with
people, but now meeting people with cancer
while he has it himself, it’s very different,” royal
author Robert Jobson tells Hello! “The King is a
fit man – he’s always taken care of himself – but
cancer doesn’t discriminate. It puts you on the
same level as everyone else – and he can now
really empathize with fellow patients.”
WARM WELCOME
Looking paler than usual but as dapper as
always, the King wore a favourite pink tie decor-
ated with tiny T. Rex dinosaurs – a humorous
nod to his cypher, Carolus Rex (which means
“Charles the King”). He was visibly moved by
the warm reception from the crowds gathered
to greet him, shaking hands with staff and
patients in the lobby.
Upstairs, sitting with patients undergoing
chemotherapy, the King opened up about his
own diagnosis for the first time.
During a long conversation with Lesley Wood-
bridge, 63 – who was being treated for sarcoma –
His Majesty reached out and held her hand.
When she asked how he was doing, he replied,
“Not too bad. It’s always a bit of a shock, isn’t

Lesley’s husband, Roger, 64, had a
brief but poignant exchange with the
Queen. “I said to her, ‘How do you feel?’
She said, ‘It’s just so difficult,’ and we
both agreed.”
RAISING AWARENESS
Marking the King’s first outing as the new
patron of Cancer Research U.K., the visit
was designed to highlight the importance
of early diagnosis. “Taking on a new pa-
tronage shows how much this means to
him,” says Robert. “He’s now experienced
cancer, [as has] his daughter-in-law. He
knows that, by taking it on, he will increase
money and awareness.”

on a new vaccine for melanoma (which his sister-

in-law Sarah Ferguson was treated for earlier this
year) and a lung cancer study, the royal couple
were shown a CT scanner that has helped save 250
lives in the past two years thanks to early detection.
“There’s so much positive news,” said the
King. “The trouble is to get enough people [de-
tected] early.”
At every turn, the royal couple appeared to fully
understand what others were going through as
they discussed side-effects, such as loss of appetite,
taste and tiredness. “I’m feeling OK today,” His

Majesty said, while the Queen shared

with a patient, “There’s a real feeling of
calm here. Everybody in the same boat –
everyone can identify.”

‘DEEP FRUSTRATION’
The King’s cancer diagnosis was an-
nounced on Feb. 5, nine months after his
coronation. His Majesty was forced to
postpone a planned tour of Canada, along
with dozens of local commitments – some-
thing that caused him “deep frustration.”
Now, however, medical staff are pleased
with his progress and have cleared him
to take on more public engagements.
Reassuringly, three days after his visit to
the cancer centre, the monarch made
another public appearance at the Royal
Windsor Horse Show. There, he mingled
with Royal Family members, including
his sister, Princess Anne, 73, and her
daughter, Zara Tindall, 42, who gave her
uncle a huge hug.
The King was “really thrilled to be out,”
Camilla told guests at a palace reception,
joking, “I’ve been trying to hold him back!”
“He’s conscious of his time,” says Robert.

There was a tangible reminder of how that reign began when
Their Majesties were presented with the Coronation Roll – an
official record of the ceremony – at the palace in the same week.
The 57-page, 11,600-word document is inscribed with every
detail from the procession and service. “It goes on for miles!”
said the King as it was unrolled on a table. As they viewed the rolls
for past monarchs’ coronations – including that of his mother,
Elizabeth II – Charles said, “It’s the most impossible thing to sign
on. Mama probably had the most frightful difficulty signing that.”

The presentation no doubt brought back happy memories of the
coronation itself, particularly their Buckingham Palace balcony
appearance, which saw tens of thousands of well-wishers along The
Mall in celebration. “The occasion was electrifying,” remembers
veteran royal photographer Arthur Edwards. “It was just incredible.”
Touchingly, he recalls, when the newly crowned King and Queen
turned away from the balcony to go back inside, “They looked at each
other and smiled as if to say, ‘We’ve done it.’ It was a huge moment
for them...They’ve got this great, almost telepathic communication.
They just smile at each other and she encourages him.
“His cancer diagnosis is another hurdle. He carries the heavy
load, but she’s there to support him.”

The most emotional moment belonged to Keith, who admitted that
he felt like he had met a “real-life princess” when they crossed
paths in 2005 at an L.A. event for Australians in the entertainment
business. It took him a week to work up the courage to call her.
“She’s raw and she’s resilient,” he divulged of the actress, who
was married to Tom Cruise (the father of her two older children,
Isabella, 31, and Connor, 29) from 1990 to 2001. “She’s serious and
a complete goofball. Crazy fun to be around. She’s an excellent
organizer, and she’s super chill.”
Four months into her marriage to Keith in 2006, their union
was tested when his drug and alcohol addiction put him in rehab.
“If you want to see what love in action really looks like, give
that a whirl,” said her devoted husband. “Nic pushed
through every negative voice – I’m sure even some
of her own – and she chose love. And here we are

at the Met Gala on May 6 with devoted husband
Keith Urban once more by her side.
The Expats star looked incredible in a strapless
monochrome gown by Balenciaga, channelling
Old Hollywood style with timeless silk gloves
and her blond hair styled in bouncy waves.
Each year, the star-studded ball has a differ-
ent theme, and the 2024 motif was a nod to
the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition
Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
Nicole – whose look was inspired by a dramatic
flamenco-like Balenciaga dress from 1951 –
told Vogue, “The Met Gala’s The Garden of
Time theme is so beautiful – I think I just fell

he’s been amazing to me,”
Nicole told Ellen DeGeneres

Makes 4 burgers

INGREDIENTS
Asparagus and feta slaw
• 6 or 7 stalks asparagus,
shaved into ribbons
• 1½ cups shredded purple
cabbage
• 1/3 cup crumbled feta
• 2 or 3 green onions, thinly sliced
• 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
• 1 tsp granulated sugar
• ½ tsp cracked black pepper
• dash of hot sauce (optional)

Pork patties
• 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
• 1/3 bunch curly kale, stems
removed, finely chopped
• 1½ lb (680 g) ground pork
• 2 tbsp full-fat Greek yogurt
• zest and juice of 1 lemon
• 1½ tsp kosher salt
• 1 tsp cracked black pepper
• ½ tsp sweet paprika
• 1 large egg, beaten
• 1/3 cup dried bread crumbs
• 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
Assembly
• 1/3 cup mayonnaise
• 4 potato buns
• bibb lettuce
1. To prepare the slaw, toss the
asparagus, cabbage, feta and
green onions in a large bowl. In
a small bowl, combine the olive
oil, apple cider vinegar, sugar,
pepper and hot sauce (if using)
and whisk until well combined.
Add the dressing to the slaw and
toss. Cover and refrigerate until
ready to use.
2. For the burgers, add 1 tsp oil
to a large skillet over medium
heat and sauté the kale for 2 to
3 minutes or until nicely wilted.
Remove from the heat and let
cool. Place the kale and all the
other burger ingredients, except
the 2 tbsp oil, in a large bowl and
mix with your hands until well
combined (do not overmix, as it
will make for tough burgers;
count to 10 while mixing and
you should be good!). Form into
4 equal-sized patties.
3. Heat the 2 tbsp oil in a large
cast-iron pan over medium-
high heat. Add 2 patties at a
time to the pan and cook until
the undersides have browned
and developed a nice crust, about
4 minutes. Flip the burgers and
allow the other sides to do the
same. The burgers are done when
an instant-read thermometer
registers 160° F.
4. To assemble, slather a bit of
mayo on the top and bottom
halves of the buns. To the
bottom halves, add some lettuce,
a patty and a handful of the
slaw. Finish with the top half of
the bun and enjoy!

Roasted purple grapes
• 1 or 2 large cluster purple
grapes, stems removed
• 2 tbsp sherry vinegar
• 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 tsp kosher salt
Whipped goat cheese
• 11 oz (310 g) goat cheese,
at room temperature
• 2 tbsp runny honey
• 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
• zest of ½ orange
• ½ tsp cracked black
pepper
Assembly
• 4 slices sourdough,
toasted
• ½ cup pistachios, roughly
chopped
• ¼ cup roughly chopped
fresh mint
1. Preheat the oven to
425° F and line a baking
sheet with foil.
2. Place the grapes on
the prepared baking
sheet, toss with vinegar
and oil and season with
salt. Roast the grapes
for 15 to 20 minutes or
until they have blistered
and shrunk in size.
Remove from the oven
and set aside.
3. To make the whipped
goat cheese, combine
the goat cheese, honey,
olive oil, orange zest
and pepper in a bowl
and mix well, until
fully incorporated
and smooth.
4. To assemble, spread or
pipe (if you want to be
fancy!) the whipped goat
cheese onto the toasted
sourdough, then top with
some roasted grapes, a
scattering of pistachios
and mint and the
drippings from the
roasted grapes.

PASTRAMI MONTE CRISTO

Makes 2 sandwiches
INGREDIENTS
• 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
• 4 slices egg bread
• 2 tbsp mayonnaise
• 12 slices pastrami
• 4 slices Gruyère
• 4 tbsp black cherry jam
• 2 large eggs
• kosher salt and cracked
black pepper
• 4 tbsp unsalted butter
1. Preheat the oven to
350° F and line a baking
sheet with parchment paper.
2. Spread mustard over
1 side of 2 slices of the
bread and mayonnaise
over 1 side of the other
2 slices. Divide the
pastrami between the
2 mustard-slathered slices
and top each with 2 slices
of Gruyère. Spread a few
tablespoons of black
cherry jam over each
and then top with the
other slice of bread, mayo
side down.
3. Crack the eggs into a
large bowl and season with
salt and pepper. Whisk to
combine.
4. Melt the butter in a
cast-iron pan over medium
heat. Carefully dip each
sandwich into the egg
mixture, letting each side
soak for a minute or so,
and then fry until the
bottom is nicely golden
brown, about 1 to
2 minutes. Flip and
continue to cook for
another 1 to 2 minutes.
5. Transfer the sandwiches
to the prepared baking
sheet and into the oven to
melt the cheese, about
5 minutes. Remove from
the oven and let the
sandwiches rest for
5 minutes before digging
in and enjoying!

INGREDIENTS
Strawberry confetti
ice cream
• 4 pints strawberry ice cream
• 2 cups confetti sprinkles
Confetti cookies
• 1 cup unsalted butter,
at room temperature
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• ½ cup brown sugar, packed
• 2 large eggs
• 1½ tsp vanilla extract
• 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
• 2 tsp cornstarch
• 1 tsp baking soda
• ½ tsp kosher salt
• 1 cup confetti sprinkles
Strawberry confetti ice cream
1. Place ice cream in a large bowl
and let it soften slightly (do not
throw out the containers).
2. Scatter the sprinkles all over
the ice cream and mix them in,
using a rubber spatula so that
they are evenly distributed.
Return the ice cream to the
containers and place them back
in the freezer to refreeze.
Confetti cookies
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer
fitted with the paddle attachment
or using a hand mixer, beat the
butter and sugars together until
combined, about 3 minutes.
Scrape down the sides of the
bowl, add the eggs and vanilla
and continue to beat until fully
incorporated, about 1 minute.
2. Whisk together the flour,
cornstarch, baking soda and salt
in a medium mixing bowl.
3. Add the flour mixture to the
butter mixture and mix until well
combined. Fold in the sprinkles.
Cover the dough with plastic
wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.
4. Position a rack in the top and
bottom thirds of the oven,
preheat the oven to 350° F and
line 2 baking sheets with
parchment paper.
5. Portion the dough using a

the way he wants to – with his wife by his side.
“There’s not a glimmer of doubt that I got it
right,” the rock ’n’ roll star has said of marrying
his high school sweetheart, Dorothea Hurley, 61.
“I get excited when I see her in the morning, every
single day.” Together, they share four children –
daughter Stephanie, 30, and sons Jesse, 29, Jake,
21, and Romeo, 20. And as the
New Jersey native, 62, notes,
they’ve done a lot of “growing
together” as parents. “That first
night with [our daughter], we were
like, ‘There’s no owner’s manual
that comes with this!’” he joked
on the School of Greatness podcast.
“And then with every child, and
every chapter of every child, the
playbook changes. But you figure
it all out, one step at a time.”

you’d get this far? No! Recently, I was honoured at
the MusiCares Person of the Year gala, and [at the
dinner] the 18-year-old in me had Paul McCartney
sitting to his left and Bruce Springsteen to his right!
If I would have been able to tell my [younger] self
that these days were going to happen to me, I would
have never in my wildest dreams believed it.

How did you land on the title for the docuseries?
At the end of every concert, I say, “Thank you, have
a good night.” But the ambiguity of the title is

“What does the future hold for me and my band?”
And that’s a health-related question. You know, my
vocal cord surgery is something I didn’t expect. And
although I’m making great strides – I sang for the
first time in public [in February] – if I ever can’t go
out and do two-and-a-half hours a night, four nights
a week, [I’ll be saying], “Thank you, good night.”
What does it mean for you to be a true artist?
Music has always affected the culture at large. And
sometimes, a writer is blessed to have a song that
resonates across borders and languages. I received
a letter from President Zelenskyy telling me what
“It’s My Life” has meant to the people of Ukraine.
You know, I was just writing that coming from who
and where I was at that time. Now, to realize the
effect it’s had on another culture, it’s humbling.
How do you feel when you listen to your old stuff?
It’s not often that you go back and listen to your
own records. But the other day, by happenstance,
I saw [a video] from the Oscars, when I did “Blaze
of Glory.” My recollection of that performance was
“Eh, it’s OK.” But when I saw it the other day, I was
like, “Damn, that kid was really good!” [Laughs] So
I was pleased to see that my recollections weren’t
even as good as [the real thing]. All I can tell you
now is that, in 2024, my hope is that I’m going to
be the best version of me. That’s my goal!

The workin’ mom of
two opens up about
missing her famous dad,
must-have snacks and
her biggest nightmare:
the grocery store!

t may seem as if Catherine
Reitman, 43, has found the secret
to balancing work and life, but
looks can be deceiving. “When people
ask me, ‘How do you have it all?’ I often
feel like a fraud because it’s impossible,
right? It’s just an impossible thing.”
Raising two sons – Jackson, 10,
and Liam, 7 – nurturing a strong
(and laughter-filled) marriage
with actor Philip Sternberg and
maintaining a successful TV career
(her hit comedy, Workin’ Moms,
wrapped its seventh and final season
last year) takes discipline and,
according to Catherine, delegation.
A recent partnership with food
and grocery delivery service DoorDash
has been the perfect pairing for the
active mom. “It’s giving me that time
back for myself,” she tells us. “I’m busy
as hell, but now I’m demanding that
time back!”
So what will she do with those extra
minutes she’s gained? Catherine –
the daughter of late Canadian film
director Ivan Reitman – shares her
plans with Hello! Canada.
MISSING THE

Oh God, I love that show.
It’s like talking about
one of my kids. I started
that show when I had
a two-year-old and
a five-week-old and I graduated
from that show with a 10-year-old
and a seven-year-old, so it was a huge
part of my life. And I miss it. I miss

last weekend, which was a huge hit –
