BEWARE OF ASBESTOS
Many HMVs still have OEM clutch disks made with asbes-
tos, which can be dangerous if particles are inhaled. It’s wise
to wear a dust mask when working on the clutches of vintage
vehicles because asbestos dust may have accumulated inside the
clutch housing. The same warning applies to the OEM brake
shoes of many historic military vehicles.

Be careful when removing or installing snap rings. They
have a nasty habit of ying off and can injure an eye. Whenever
possible, use proper snap ring pliers. Wearing safety glasses is a
good precaution.

Left, and right: Prior
to WWII, the British
military had few half-
track vehicles. One
type was this Crossley,
which was mainly
congured for use
as a staff car and
scout vehicle.

A Bedford BT-6 Traclat. In 1943, after German

medium half-tracks had been captured in
Africa and tested in Britain, it was decided
to copy them as towing vehicles for the
British heavy eld and anti-aircraft guns. The
German SdKfz.7 8-ton half-track was chosen
as the model, and Vauxhall Motors’ Bedford
Truck Division was contracted to copy it
as closely as possible. Vauxhall insisted on
large orders before starting production, so
the Army ordered 7,500 for 1944 and 5,000
for 1945 delivery — though doubts were
expressed that these orders could actually
be met. Indeed, by June of 1945 only six
prototypes had been built. Testing showed
that the Traclat was superior to all other
vehicles being considered for the towing
task, but production was cancelled due to
high cost and scarcity of materials.

The Traclat was powered by two

Bedford six-cylinder 140-hp
engines mounted side-by-side
with separate radiators. The
engines drove via shafts into
a coupling gearbox. The track
bogie-wheels were of German
pattern but copied from several
types — the outer ones from
the SdKfz-11 / SdKfz-251 and
the inners from a DB-10 12
ton. Vauxhall re-engineered
everything to Imperial
measurements.

Another British experiment was
adapting Canadian Military
Pattern (CMP) trucks — built
by the Canadian divisions of
Ford and Chevrolet — into half-
tracks. Interestingly, the track
mechanism appears to have
been taken from the British
Universal Carrier. Although
these vehicles may have been
successful, like the Bedford
Traclat only a few prototypes
were built and the machines
were never put into production.
While it seems likely that other
half-track prototypes were built
and tested, information is scarce
and the British military seems to
have been satised using mainly
their Universal Carrier and U.S.-
supplied half-tracks during WWII.

Associated Equipment
Company (AEC) was
a British vehicle
manufacturer from 1912
until 1979 that specialized
in heavy vehicles such as
buses, motor coaches and
trucks. The AEC Matador
was designed for the British
Military in 1939 as a cargo
carrier and artillery tractor.

The Matador was a rugged

four-wheel-drive machine with
excellent off-road performance. It
became one of the most common
vehicles in the British arsenal,
and several half-track variants
were produced.

In 1921 Citroën motors of France
introduced a half-track which seemed
primarily intended as a gentleman’s
SUV, as this advertisement seems to
indicate, although the French military
was also interested in the machine and
used it mostly as a staff car and scout
vehicle until war with Germany began
to seem inevitable.

Commonly known as the

P-17, the basic Citroën
half-track did indeed
look more like a civilian
recreational vehicle
rather than a weapon
of war.

Despite its rather elegant looks,

the Citroën P-17 (aka P-107)
proved to be a rugged and
reliable machine and was easily
adapted and congured for
military service. Many Citroën
half-tracks (and conventional
Citroën trucks) were captured by
the German Army and used until
the end of the war.

Re-enactors relive
‘The Eagle Has Landed’
at historic location
Q By John Norris
he mid-1970s was a time when some terric

T war movies were released in the cinema, such

as the 1977 blockbuster “A Bridge Too Far”,
based on the actual “Operation Market Garden”, with
a stellar cast that included Robert Redford and James
Caan. Inspired by the book of the same name by the
historian Cornelius Ryan, it featured great action
sequences and lots of vehicles. Then there were the
movies based on novels, such as “Cross of Iron” by
Willi Heinrich, also appearing on screen in 1977.
Another war novel to be turned into a movie
around this time was “The Eagle Has Landed”,
which hit the screens in 1976 and starred Robert Du-
val and Michael Caine. It told the story of an elite
unit of German parachutists landing in England with
orders to either kidnap or assassinate wartime Prime
Minister Winston Churchill. The book was gripping
and the movie met with favorable reviews from crit-
ics and movie-goers alike. It frequently appears on
television and over the years has acquired something
of a cult following, with fans buying collectable
items connected with the movie, including posters
and 1/6th scale model gures of Michael Caine’s
character Steiner.
Movie directors like to use real locations for au-
thenticity or at least somewhere resembling the place
where the action is set. This is all very well for real
locations, but “The Eagle Has Landed” is a work of
ction, and the locations, apart from the area of East
Anglia and the Channel Island of Alderney which are
named in the book and lm, do not exist. In planning
the production, suitable stand-in locations had to be

the perfect location. The estate includes a watermill,

the River Thames which ows through the estate. The main house and St.
Margaret’s Church seen in the lm are also part of the estate, as is the cot-
tage where the German spy, Joanna Grey, lives as a respectable member
of the community.
Because of its association with the movie, Mapledurham Estate, which
is open for the public to visit and hosts special events including WWII
weekends, has come to be seen as something of a shrine by re-enactors.
The location is ideal for recreating battle scenarios, which naturally in-
clude an attack on the watermill, just like the movie. Owners of military
vehicles drive their vehicles to the site and those with DUKWs and GPUs
sometimes take to the water on the River Thames.
The main house featured in the movie as the unit HQ for the American
army in the area and really does have the distinctive circular driveway
as seen in the movie. It is open to visitors, and inside this is where Larry
Hagman’s character makes his ill-conceived battle plans to attack the
Germans. When the production crew arrived, the estate was effectively
turned into one large movie set, with temporary buildings being specially
constructed, including a village shop, a pub (bar) and other buildings.
These were removed at the end of lming, but by looking at still photo-
graphs from the movie, it is possible to work out where they were
The watermill and the church, with its cemetery, are both open and
can be visited. The waterwheel at the mill is iconic and looking at it con-
jures up the image where the German soldier rescues the child from the
water. Looking at the front door of the nearby, it is hard not to think
this is where the Germans dressed as Polish soldiers and Michael Caine’s
character talks with the American ofcer. It is another of those moments
which makes you feel just like being part of the movie.
At one event I attended there were some re-enactors in Polish uni-
forms and I asked them if they would mind recreating the scene. In an
instant, they jumped at the chance and went further by taking up ring
positions behind the gravestones, again, just as in the movie. It was an
opportunity too good to miss and all done with respect.
There are many rural villages across Britain which have been used as
movies set, but none have acquired the same unique status with which
re-enactors and movie fans hold Mapeldurham.

After we were cleared, I hooked up the jeep (it had a tow

bar) and headed back to Dallas.
Like others who have restored military vehicles,
I wanted to honor my father’s military service with
the unit markings. Col. Harold Lee Koester’s career
spanned 43 years, so I needed to choose a period that
an M38A1 played a part in. Fortunately, my broth-
ers and I found our “Holy Grail” photo — Dad in an
M38A1 (with visible hood number) while at Ft. Lewis
in Tacoma, Wash., in 1961. He was there because of
President Kennedy’s activation of the National Guard’s
famed 32nd Infantry Division (the Red Arrow Division)
in response to the Berlin Crisis. Approximately 10,000
Guardsmen traveled by way of train, car and plane
from Wisconsin to the Northwest to train for possible
deployment to Germany.
At the time, Dad was a 2nd lieutenant with Com-
pany E of the 105th Armor Battalion. Certainly the
training was serious, but from the stories my brothers
and I heard over the years, the familiarity of being
friends and neighbors allowed the men in Dad’s unit
some levity during their time at Ft. Lewis. One story
recounts that Dad’s 48-ton, M48 Patton medium tank
lost a track while crossing railroad tracks. When he ra-
dioed for advice on what to do, it was suggested that he
“get out and push” and “ shoot the train”. Fortunately,
the tank was repaired before they were faced with any
further dilemmas.
The jeep as it appears now is the result of a second, Dad was with E Company of the 105th Armor Batttalion at the time of the

attempt. This time, a complete teardown, sandblast-
ing, and professional bodywork/painting was followed
by my friend and MV mechanic extrordinare, David
Deweese, overhauling the axles, engine, and transmis-
sion. I handled the less-complicated nal assembly and,
unfortunately, many of the early restoration pictures
were lost.
My goal was to have a “just delivered” look as
opposed to the “just back from the eld” appearance
of my 1943 MB. While my goal is to be historically
accurate, I found that the National Guard was rather
Spartan in markings on their vehicles (e.g.- overow
warning, tire pressure), so I allowed myself some ex-
ibility and added those often seen features. An unusual
marking that I did nd photographic evidence of was
the division’s Red Arrow emblem on the back fenders
of an M38A1, instead of the white star. Additionally, I
have a 1952 M100 trailer that I am still restoring.
More than 20 years of jeep ownership has provided
numerous opportunities for my family and I to display
the M38A1. Over the years, my wife Sheree (an ac-
complished seamstress) has crafted outts representing
Rosie the Riveter, “A League of Their Own”, army
fatigues, and vintage dresses to add additional historical
context to our entries in parades and ceremonies. For
several years, my daughter, Ariel, would join me in set-

the same fascination with green machines. I have been, and
currently am, a member of MVPA afliate clubs in the DFW

eager to help you enjoy, nd, and/or restore a military vehicle.
I strongly recommend seeking out such a group in your area if
you haven’t already.
In summary, my jeeps have allowed me to indulge in a
childhood obsession, honor my father’s military career, and
make great and unique memories with my family. You gotta
like that.

- Pete Shaw owns this cool 1941 Bantam BRC 40.

“In the early ’80s there was a picture on the cover
of one of the 4WD magazines with the question
of ‘can you identify this jeep?’” Shaw recalls. “A
friend of mine saw it and went from N.J .to Buffalo,
N.Y., to check it out. He came back and identied
it as a Bantam BRC in rough condition. He left a
deposit on it and came back and asked me if I
was interested in it. At the time I had no idea what
it was, but I went back up and bought it. I got it
home and put it in the back shed and it sat there
until about 6 years ago. I nally dragged it out and
slowly started restoring it. What you see is 5-6
years of on-and-off work. It’s now about 95% done.
I couldn’t have done it without the help from other
restorers who have also restored these vehicles.
Parts are scarce and expensive, but it’s worth it to
have a vehicle that has so much history behind it. I
would say it’s probably 80-90 percent original.”

The French Army used about 16,900 R2087 util-

as Algeria in the 1950s. The basic version weighs 2.23

length. Indeed, the truck is just over 15 feet 9 inches.
Height to the top of the driver’s cab is just over 8 feet

clearance of less than 10 inches meant it was difcult
to drive in its cross-country roles.
The driver’s cab is tted with split windscreen

it was time to change the name of the event.

reunion.”
The event takes in the Wisconsin Northwoods surrounding

“We have people on the Monday before
doing trail work and stuff,” Zatloukal pointed
out. There are 5 miles of trails out there, so by
Wednesday the vendors and participants and
stuff can come in. On Wednesday and Thurs-
day they were all out riding all those trails,
that’s why you saw all those Mules around.
We have the campgrounds right on the prop-
erty with all the toys and all the showers and
bathrooms and stuff, and these people live here
for a week!
“The vehicles, I know a lot of these people,
we’re old-timers. If you go to a national, there
will be more vehicles, but I think we pull in a
world-class assortment. There was some very,
very rare stuff here.”
There is also a lot of rare and unusual stuff
in the Motorama Museum, which is packed
with an amazing array of cars from Zatloukal’s Delvin Wurtz had double the fun with his pair of 1943 Case tractors — one from

torcycles. The museum alone makes the trip
worth it.
The Central Wisconsin Military Vehicles
Show has certainly cemented its reputation
as a fun, low-stress, pitch-your-tent-and-stay-
awhile kind of event, but Zatloukal says he has
to enforce a few rules to keep it that way. There
is no live ammunition allowed for safety rea-
sons. There are no political messages allowed
anywhere, period. And the ag that can be
own is the American ag. “If you want to sell
your Nazi ag at your table, ne, but you’re
not ying [it],” he says. “I want everybody
to feel welcome here. I don’t care what race,
creed, religion or sexual orientation you are.”
Zatloukal believes that other military
shows, and collector car shows as well, would
do well to follow similar plans and make their
shows less “traditional” and drum up ways to John Garcia’s 2000 Oshkosh M985 HEMTT was one of the biggest attractions — literally.
make them more entertaining. He says he open
to almost any idea if it makes his show a little
more goofy and interesting.
“I would say 75, 80 percent of these vehi-
cles, I’ve seen them before,”he says. “But you
can add other things to add some excitement.
That’s why you do the trails rides. That’s why
we have the party. At a lot of the shows it’s a
show — 5 o’clock comes and they shut down
and people go get dinner and they go to sleep.
Here, it’s, ‘Let’s go up north for the weekend.
Let’s go up north and camp!’
“Hey, tis is never going to be a Findlay
show, it’s never going to be Aberdeen, because
of where we are. But as far as courting other
people to it … I’m not going to beg people,
‘Please, please coming to the show.’ I’ll tell
them, ‘Here’s what we do, come and have fun.’
You wouldn’t believe some of the stupid [stuff]
we do here!” - Bradley Ackerman’s heavily laden 1968 Kaiser M715 was clearly at home in the woods.

You were going to get a little soggy if you went for a spin on the wooded trails in either of these sturdy Mules, but
it’s not likely you would get stuck! The trailer is a homemade and non-military, but uses Mule parts and looks great!

be identied. It was a strange feeling driving across this site,
especially knowing the purpose it was used for. The lessons
learned at this site probably saved many lives in Normandy.
After the drive through the dunes we made our way down
onto the beach, which today is a haven for surfers. Judging by
the startled looks on their faces upon seeing military trucks,
motorcycles, jeeps and armoured cars suddenly emerge from
the sand dunes, the surfers must have thought they were being

tide out, this was a perfect opportunity for drivers to open full
throttle and race along the sand. With no obstacles, it was a
thrilling experience as these old vehicles reached some amaz-
ing speeds.
Convoys are always very atmospheric, but to drive down
the narrow Devon country lanes the same as units of the US
Army once did almost 80 years ago was like going back in
time. We ended our trip by driving through the Dorset town
of Dorchester, to the delight of the residents who lined the
streets.
To own a historic military vehicle is to own a piece of his-
tory. No wonder it is a popular hobby which so many of us
enjoy so much. Personally, I’m looking forward to our next
drive out, which hopefully won’t be too long a wait.
