ASSIGNEMENT 2: the frontier heritage summary

The chapter explores the impact of the American frontier on American values, culture, and
entertainment. It discusses how the frontier movement, which lasted more than two
centuries, helped to shape the basic American values of individual freedom, self-reliance, and
equality of opportunity. It also emphasizes the ideal of self-reliance that was closely
associated with the frontier movement. it discusses how the self-reliant frontiersman has
been idealized by Americans as the classic American male hero: the rugged individualist. This
hero is a man who has been made physically tough and rugged by the conditions of frontier
life. He is skilled with guns and other weapons, needs no help from others, and often appears
in stories as alone, unmarried, and without children. The chapter also explains that there are
two types of heroic rugged individualists, each drawn from a different stage of life on the
frontier. In the early frontier, which existed before the Civil War of the 1860s, the main
struggle was man against the wilderness. The later frontier, which existed after the Civil War,
was more complex, and many people living in the West today still hold these beliefs about
freedom from government controls. Therefore ,the chapter disscuses the "American Macho
Heroes" and how the Wild West hero has helped shape the American idea of "macho," or
male, strength through movies and television programs. The document explains that almost
all American male heroes on television and in movies have traditionally had the common
ability to demonstrate their strength through physical violence. Once the western macho
hero had been created, the model for this hero was used in other settings-for soldiers in
battle, and tough detectives and policemen fighting crime. From the cowboy heroes to the
Terminator, Captain America, and Jenko, these heroes can fight with their fists, guns, and
other weapons. Although there are movie and TV heroes who are respected more for their
intelligence and sensitivity than their physical prowess, these classic macho male heroes still
dominate much of American entertainment and video games. The document also notes that
there are now also female versions of this macho image, including Katniss Everdeen, who
competes in the Hunger Games armed with just a bow and arrow. Overall, this section
explores the impact of the frontier on American culture and entertainment, particularly in
terms of the ideal of the macho hero. The chapter also talks about the "BROAD PUBLIC
SUPPORT FOR MANY GUN POLICY PROPOSALS." According to the text, there are several gun
policy proposals that have broad public support, including background checks for private and
gun show sales, preventing people with mental illness from purchasing guns, a federal
database to track gun sales, armed security guards/police in more schools, a ban on semi-
automatic weapons, a ban on assault-style weapons, a ban on high-capacity ammunition
clips, a ban on online sale of ammunition, and more teachers and school officials with guns in
schools. The source of this information is the Pew Research Center, which conducted a survey
in January 2013. However, it is important to note that the issue of gun control is very
controversial in the United States, and people on both sides of the issue have strong
opinions.

Overall the chapter explores how the American frontier over two centuries shaped core
American values like individual freedom and self-reliance, while also acknowledging the
displacement of Native Americans. It delves into the frontier's influence on American
entertainment and its relevance to modern issues like gun control and the impact of
entertainment heroes on youth.
