Read the passage below and answer questions 26 to 30.

Birds are one of the most interesting species in the world. Having such a

large variety of birds means that there are many interesting variations ranging

from the colour of their feathers to their eating habits.

The toucan is easily identified because of its large, comical-looking bill.

Its brightly coloured bill with its stripes or patches and its mostly black, blue, 5

green and brown body are unmistakable. The parrot, on the other hand,

has a beak that is a fraction of the toucan’s. It has a short blunt bill with a

downward curving upper mandible that fits neatly over a much broader

upward curving mandible.

Even with similar features like the wings, the beak and a tail, birds differ 10

greatly in size and shape. The turaco has a long tail and short rounded wings.

A motmot stands out from other birds because of its tail. Unlike other birds with

long tails, motmots have elongated tail feathers that end up in a compact

flag-like structure at the end. In contrast, broadbills have much shorter and

slightly broader tails with colourful feathers. 15

It certainly comes as no surprise why birds have captured the attention

of many people. Sometimes, even before a bird is spotted, its calls become

a way of identifying it. There are imperceptible chirps and gregarious noises.

Ask any avid bird-watcher and he will tell you just how varied bird calls are.

Read the passage carefully.

Joanne and I pushed aside the overhanging leaves that were still

dripping with dew. Overhead, the warbling was dying off. Most of the

blue-breasted feathered creatures were about to leave. The light made

a concentric pattern on the forest floor, making the forest look like it was a

stage. I kept my camera and Joanne kept the notebook that she used to 5

take notes. In the past hour, we had made a detailed study of the forest,

something that we always wanted to do but never had the patience for.

Surprisingly, an hour was all we needed to learn more about the forest. Since

it was along our route, we decided to make the most of what was around

us. We headed towards the rugged terrain in front of us. 10

The rocks were sharper than we had expected. Made up of tiny

disintegrated pieces of rock, semi-sharp edges pointing upwards were

scattered everywhere. Our plans to slide across were crushed as we picked

our way carefully across the terrain. Still, we never realized the danger until

Joanne slipped when she was beyond my reach. We realized how dangerous 15

the barren ground was for someone who lost his footing. She slid a few metres

but fortunately missed the sharper rocks. She was right to keep her hands

off the ground. I hurried towards her, trying my best to avoid the sharp rocks

that surrounded her.

The fall jolted us out of our reverie. For the first time, we noticed the eerie 20

silence around us and the darkening clouds above. Leaving the warmth of

the forest behind was a mistake. The forest must have its benefits if it could lure

so many creatures to make their homes there. There was nothing appealing

about what lay before us.

“Should we turn back?” I asked. Joanne was about to reply when 25

we both heard a muffled roar in the distance. She changed her mind. We

scrambled back towards the forest, our hearts a mixture of relief and regret.

The brochure of that beautiful mountain lodge at the edge of the stream

lay silently in our backpacks.
