Write your answers on the lines provided.

1. Simplify 5a + 9 + 7a – 3.

2. Linda is b years old. Her mother is 6 times as old as Linda. Her grandmother is 20 years older
than her mother. Find Linda’s grandmother’s age.

3. Evaluate the algebraic expression when y = 13.

8y – 29 + 3y – 18

4. The average mass of three boys is 6v kg. The average mass of two girls is 6v kg. Find the
average mass of the five children.

5. George bought a dozen pencils. The pencils cost $m. What was the cost of each pencil?

30v ÷ 5 = 6v = 96
18v + 12v = 30v = 104 – 29 + 39 – 18 = 12a + 6
12 2 × 6v = 12v = (8 × 13) – 29 + (3 × 13) – 18 = 5a + 7a + 9 – 3

Solutions to Revision: Algebra

1. (a) (n + 4) + 6 = n + 10
Their total age is (n + 10) years now.
(n + 10) + 10 + 10 = n + 30
Their total age in 10 years’ time is (n + 30) years.
(b) n + 30 = 8 + 30 = 38
Their total age in 10 years’ time is 38 years.

2. (a) 3 × m = 3m
Sarah has 3m cards.
m + 22 = (m + 22)
Ivy has (m + 22) cards.
3m + m + 12 = 4m + 12
Casey has (4m + 12) cards.
m + 3m + (m + 22) + (4m + 12) = 9m + 34
They have (9m + 34) cards altogether.
9m + 34
(b) (9m + 34) ÷ 4 = ____________

4
9m + 34
Each girl gets ____________

4 (
   cards. )
3. (a) 5 × $29 = $145
The bag cost $145.
$29 + $145 + $y = $(174 + y)
Alicia had $(174 + y) at first.
(b) $(174 + y) = $(174 + 52) = $226
Alicia had $226 at first.

Write your answers on the lines provided.

1. The figure is not drawn to scale. ABED is a trapezium where AD // BE. CDE is an isosceles
triangle where DE = DC. Find ∠DAB.

A D

58º
B E C

2. The figure is not drawn to scale. WXY is a right-angled triangle and WYZ is a straight line.
Find ∠WXY.

3. The figure is not drawn to scale. ACB is an isosceles triangle where AC = AB. CAD is a triangle.
CDE is a straight line. Find ∠DAB.
E D C

132º 67º

54º
A B

∠WXY = 180º – 90º – 51º = 39º (sum of ∠s in a D = 180º)

∠DAB = 65º + 72º = 137º
∠WYX = 180º – 129º = 51º (∠s on a straight line)
∠CAD = 180º – 48º – 67º = 65º (sum of ∠s in a D = 180º)
2. 39º
∠CDA = 180º – 132º = 48º (∠s on a straight line)
∠CAB = 180º – 54º – 54º = 72º (sum of ∠s in a D = 180º) (opposite ∠s are equal) ∠DAB = 122º
∠ACB = ∠ABC = 54º (isosceles D) (∠s on a straight line) ∠DEB = 180º – 58º = 122º
3. 137º Solutions: 1. 122º
