Homework - Week 3
1 Properties of Triangles
This homework has two parts - concept and mixed problems.

1.1 Homework Problems

Concept Problems - Homework

Concept Problem 1
If the medians B E and C F are equal in a △ABC prove that AB = AC.

Concept Problem 2
Let D, E, F be the feet of the altitude from A, B, C in a △ABC. Prove that the
perpendicular bisector of EF also bisects BC.

Concept Problem 3
If S is the circumcentre of a △ABC and D, E, F are the feet of the altitudes of
△ABC then prove that SB ⊥ DF .

Concept Problem 4
Let P be any point inside a regular polygon. If di is the distance of P from the P th
side of the polygon, prove that d1 + d2 . . . + dn = constant, where n is the number
of sides of the polygon.

Mixed Problems - Homework

Some of the concepts required in this section may be unknown to you. Do

not worry. Try whatever you can. This section is designed to give students a
continuous exposure to mixed problems.

Problem 1
In triangle ABC, let P and R be the feet of the perpendiculars from A onto the
external and internal bisectors of ∠ABC, respectively; and let Q and S be the feet
of the perpendiculars from A onto the internal and external bisectors of ∠ACB,
respectively. If P Q = 7, QR = 6 and RS = 8, what is the area of triangle ABC ?

Problem 2
For an acute triangle △ABC with orthocenter H, let HA be the foot of the altitude
from A to BC, and define HB and HC similarly. Show that H is the incenter of
△HA HB HC .

Problem 3
Let ABC be an acute angled scalene triangle with circumcentre O and orthocentre
H. If M is the midpoint of BC, then show that AO and HM intersect on the
circumcircle of ABC.
