Assignment: to be submitted on May 22.

1. A refrigeration system has a refrigerating capacity of 5kW and a COP of 4. Calculate the power
input required for the system.
2. In a refrigeration cycle, the refrigerant enters the evaporator at -10ᵒC and leaves at 10ᵒC. If the
heat absorbed in the evaporator is 3kW, determine the mass flow rate of the refrigerant (use
specific heat of the refrigerant = 4.18kJ/kgK)
3. A refrigeration system uses R-134a as the refrigerant. The system operates between a high
pressure of 1.6 MPa and a low pressure of 0.2 MPa. The refrigerant enters the compressor as
saturated vapor at 0.2 MPa and leaves the condenser as saturated liquid at 1.6 MPa. Calculate
the theoretical COP of this refrigeration cycle assuming ideal processes.
4. In a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, the refrigerant R-134a absorbs 25 kW of heat in the
evaporator. The refrigerant enters the compressor at a temperature of -10°C and exits at 50°C. If
the specific heat capacities at constant pressure for the refrigerant in gaseous form are cp =
0.8kJ/kgK and in liquid form are cp=1.4kJ/kgK, Calculate the amount of heat rejected in the
condenser.
5. A refrigeration system operates between two temperature limits: Tlow = -10ᵒC and Thigh = 40ᵒC. If
the refrigeration capacity is 12kw and the COP is 4, calculate the power consumed by the
compressor. Additionally, verify the power consumption using the Carnot COP formula for
comparison.
6. Refrigerant 134a serves as the working fluid in an ideal vapor-compression refrigerant cycle,
which runs at steady state. At -100°C, saturated liquid exits the condenser, and at 280°C,
saturated vapor enters the compressor. Refrigerant flows at a rate of 5 kg/min. A) the
compressor power in KW b) the refrigerating capacity in tons, c) the coefficient of performance
