Balancing chemical equations-worksheet

I)Write the word equations below as chemical equations and balance:

1) Zinc and lead (II) nitrate react to form zinc nitrate and lead.

2) Aluminum bromide and chlorine gas react to form aluminum chloride and
bromine gas.

3) Sodium phosphate and calcium chloride react to form calcium phosphate and
sodium chloride.

4) Potassium metal and chlorine gas combine to form potassium chloride.

5) Aluminum and hydrochloric acid react to form aluminum chloride and hydrogen
gas.

6) Calcium hydroxide and phosphoric acid react to form calcium phosphate and
water.

7) Copper and sulfuric acid react to form copper (II) sulfate and water and sulfur
dioxide.

8) Hydrogen gas and nitrogen monoxide react to form water and nitrogen gas.

9) When lithium hydroxide pellets are added to a solution of sulfuric acid

(H2SO4), lithium sulfate and water are formed.

10) Magnesium reacts with sodium fluoride to produce magnesium fluoride and
elemental sodium.

11) If a copper coil is placed into a solution of silver nitrate, silver crystals form
and copper (I) nitrate is generated.

12) When crystalline C6H12O6 is burned in oxygen, carbon dioxide and water
vapor are formed.

13) Calcium carbonate combines with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to produce calcium
chloride, water and carbon dioxide gas.
II.Write the chemical equations and balance each of the following word
equations.

a) Aluminum metal reacts with iron (II) oxide powder to produce aluminum oxide
solid and iron metal.

b) Aluminum sulphate solution and calcium hydroxide solution produce a

precipitate of aluminum hydroxide and solid calcium sulphate.

c) Ammonia gas (NH3) plus oxygen gas yields nitrogen monoxide gas plus water
vapour.

d) Calcium hydroxide solution and carbon dioxide gas yields solid calcium
carbonate and liquid water.

e) Aqueous iron (III) chloride and sodium carbonate solution yields aqueous
sodium chloride and a precipitate of iron (III) carbonate.

f) Solid iron (III) oxide and carbon monoxide gas yields iron metal and carbon
dioxide gas.

g) Magnesium carbonate solution plus aqueous hydrochloric acid (HCl) yields

magnesium chloride solution plus liquid water and carbon dioxide gas.

h) Silicon dioxide solid plus aqueous hydrofluoric acid (HF) yields solid silicon
tetrafluoride plus liquid water.

i) Aqueous sodium hydroxide and carbon dioxide gas yields sodium carbonate
solution and liquid water.

III.Given below are word equations. Convert them into chemical equations using
symbols and valencies. Balance the equations. Use appropriate signs for gases and
precipitates in the reaction.

i) Zinc Sulphide + Oxygen gas → Zinc oxide solid + Sulphur dioxide gas
ii) Silver nitrate solution + Sodium chloride solution → Silver chloride
precipitate + Sodium nitrate solution
iii) Sulphur solid + Concentrated nitric acid → Sulphuric acid + Nitrogen dioxide
gas + Water

iv) Barium chloride Solution + Potassium sulphate Solution → Barium sulphate

Precipitate + Potassium chloride solution
v) Silver nitrate powder on heating→ silver metal + nitrogen dioxide gas + Oxygen
gas.
vi) Aluminium hydroxide + Nitric acid → Aluminium nitrate + Water.
