Sub: Enhanced Thunderstorms & Rainfall Activity over Assam during 26th May -29th May ,2024

Current Meteorological Conditions:

The deep depression over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 17 kmph during past 06
hours and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of 25th May, 2024 over the same region near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 89.7°E,
about 440 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), about 440 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands (West
Bengal) and 480 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal).
It is very likely to continue to move nearly northwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over eastcentral & adjoining
north Bay of Bengal around 25th May evening. Continuing to move further northwards, it would intensify into a Severe
Cyclonic Storm by 26th May morning and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island
and Khepupara by 26th May midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed of 110-120 gusting to 135 kmph

Under the influence of the above system Widespreads rainfall accompanied with Squally wind with speed reaching
upto 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph along with heavy to very heavy rainfall on 26th May, 2024 and with extremely
heavy rainfall on 27th May, 2024 and thunderstorm & lightning with heavy to very heavy rainfall on 28th – 29th May,2024
is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam.

30-40 kmph) very likely to occur at isolated places over Darrang, Udalguri , Morigaon,
Nagaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong , Golaghat districts and thunderstorms
& lightning very likely to occur at isolated places over Jorhat, Majuli, Sibsagar,
Charaideo districts.
Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at most places with squally wind
with speed 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph accompanied with heavy to very heavy
with extremly heavy rain in isolated places over Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi &

Barpeta, Baksa,Nalbari, Kamrup (Rural), Kamrup (Metro), Karbi Anglong and
thunderstorm & lightning and gusty with wind speed 30 to 40 kmph very likely at isolated
places over rest of the districts of Assam.
 Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at most places with thunderstorm and
lightning accompanied with heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rain rain likely at
isolated places over Barpeta, Baksa districts and thunderstorm & lightning ccompanied
with heavy to very heavy rain likely at isolated places over Dhubri, South Salmara
Mankachar, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Goalpara, Bongaingaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Nalbari,
Kamrup (Rural), Kamrup (Metro), Darrang, Udalguri, Jorhat, Majuli, Sibsagar and

Probable Impacts
 Visibility may become poor due to intense spell of rainfall leading to traffic congestion.
 Temporary Disruption of traffic due to water logging in roads/ uprooting of trees/ breaking of tree
branches leading to increased travel time.
 Temporary disruption in ferry services may be due to strong winds/gusty winds.
 Partial damages to kutcha houses and huts.
 Possibilities of Flash floods due to intense spell of rainfall.
 Water logging / flooding in many parts of low lying areas.
 Land slides/mud slide/land slip very likely.
 Possibility of damages to vulnerable structures due to Heavy rainfall and strong winds.
 Heavy rainfall may damage the crop in the maturity stage.
 High winds may cause lodging of vegetables and plants.
 Lightning may injure people and cattle at open place.
Actions suggested
 Follow traffic advisories issued, if any.
 Avoid going to areas that face water logging problem often.
 Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.
 Provide proper drainage in the cropped field if heavy rainfall is expected.
 Propping of the vegetable pandals recommended.
 Take shelter during thunderstorm/lightning activities.
