1)Weigh out between Xg of anhydrous copper sulfate in a dry weighing boat (the stock of solid
should be in closed container as it many react with water vapor in the air and turn into hydrated
copper sulfate and to stop it absorbing water form air ) .(Used a dry weighing boat mass of
solutes with weighing boat –mass of weighing boat .When measuring mass of solutes the mass of
weighing boat should be added into consideration so that an accurate mass can be achieved .

2. record temperatures at minute intervals for up to 15 minutes.

3. Using a measuring cylinder, place 25 cm3 of distilled water into a polystyrene cup(as it a good
insulator and therefore heat energy will not be given out into surroundings) in a glass beaker, and
record its temperature at the beginning (t=0), start the timer and then record the temperature
again every minute, stirring the liquid continuously.

4. At the fourth minute, add all the powdered anhydrous copper (II) sulfate rapidly to the water
in the polystyrene cup and continue to stir but do not record the temperature.

At the fifth minute and for every minute up to 15 minutes, stir and record the temperature of the
solution in the polystyrene cup. When not stirring a lid should be placed on the polystyrene cup-
to prevent heat loss

(experiment 2 is the same procedure )

Assumptions made during the practical :

-experimental values will be less exothermic than actual data book

-all energy released by reaction is transferred to water

Chemicals

• Hydrated copper(II) sulfate crystals Control : Use minimum amount required

• Anhydrous copper(II) sulfate powder

Risk

Irritant, Harmful if ingested
