Text: My Family
The meaning of family was extremely wide. Everybody in the village was a member of big family.
In the old days, it was not rare to see many generations live in the same compound (grandfather, parents,
children, brothers, sisters but also uncles and aunts, cousins and nephews), and family solidarity was
always practiced. For example it was not only the father, but all the old persons of the village, who take
care of the children's education. Everybody was responsible. In fact, in the African customs, individual
life and loneliness did not exist. The widow or the divorcee, the old people and handicapped persons were
not abandoned. The little that a family possessed was shared among the whole members and with even
guests who are passing by. Poverty is never individual but collective. If it is collective, nobody is poor...
Today the most serious case is the outbreak of the family. Many old people are alone and they are
affected not by poverty but in their feelings because they live with nobody. This situation is the
punishment of a person who is modernized, who lived like Europeans and who had never helped his
parents, relatives and other people. If families are permanently separated, its members will not like each
other.
