Opinion Essay

What is an opinion essay?

An “agree or disagree” opinion essay is a type of essay where the writer forms an opinion about a
topic, often in the form of an answer to a question and uses factual and anecdotal evidence to
support that opinion.

What is the purpose of an opinion essay?

The purpose of an opinion essay is to clearly articulate a position, often in response to a question.
It’s a writer’s way of demonstrating both what they think and why they think it.

The Question
• What is your opinion?
• Do you agree or disagree?
• To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Common Mistakes
These three errors are common in opinion essays.
1. Not stating an opinion.
The most common mistake that students make is not giving an opinion. The
question will clearly state that you must choose one side of the argument.
2. Giving arguments for both views.
It doesn’t matter which side of the argument you take or even, whether you agree
with it. Choose the one you can develop the best argument for.
3. Not supporting your opinion with clear reasons.
Make sure that you don’t change your opinion part way through the essay, and
don’t give reasons for the opposing view.
