Were Halfway There

I can hardly believe this school year is halfway over! As a senior, each year seems to fly by faster than the one before it. Between football games, school, and road trips, it seems like this semester happened in the blink of an eye. Like many of my classmates, I have several friends graduating this month, and it makes me realize how close my own graduation is. I cant believe my time on The Plains is almost over! To all the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors, I want to encourage you to make the most of your time here at Auburn. Sometimes its hard to realize how wonderful this school is until your time here is almost up. Study hard, work hard, and play hard, because youll never get to repeat the college experience. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to treasure the relationships you build while at Auburn. You never know where youll meet your best friends. I met mine in my freshman dorm and during my study abroad trip. My friends are what Ill miss the most after I graduate, so I plan to make the most of the last semester with them. I hope that all of you are also making the most of your time here at Auburn! War Eagle! Kathryn Johnson, Campus Ambassador

World Peace? Nahhh. Running a marathon? HA. ats cute. If I were to be completely honest, Id have to say my New Years resolutions would be not to fall in love, fall asleep (rumor has it bouncers dont take too kindly to that) or--you know-just FALL in a bar downtown again. Actually Ive only done two of those before...Ill let you guess which.

Fall happens to take the gold on this one. Id like to state, and I feel like a lot of people agree with me on this one, that everyone looks their best in the Fall. With Autumn comes jackets, boots, and multiple layers that people have been desperately waiting to wear as the malicious Texas summer finally nears its end. I dig the attitude of dress to impress, and it works best in Autumn weather!

Ever since I was old enough to play with toys, I always wanted a Barbie doll. Dont get me wrong I did have dolls to play with but I did not want just any doll, but a Barbie brand doll. Isnt that an essential part of every girls doll collection? Until this day, I have yet to call a Barbie doll my own.

Plus, you can make accessories out of anything. Turn ornaments into jewelry and garland into a belt. Go crazy and have fun!

Pull an all-nighter
You probably do homework the same day it is assigned and never need caffeine, no-dos, or redbull. Take a few weeks off just to party it up, let the work build up then spend the entire night before it is due to get it done.

THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU DIE.... I MEAN GRADUATE.

Weve made a college bucket list for you to kick

Seems like only yesterday you were graduating from High School and awaiting the best years of your life in COLLEGE. Graduation is just around the corner again, and unfortunately you either havent had enough fun in undergrad or youve had too much. Either way we have a list of 10 things you have to do before you enter the Real World

Streak
Get a few friends to shed layers and drop those draws with you and take off across campus in your birthday suits. Feel the wind beneath and above your knees.

Take a trip
Whether its a roadtrip, study abroad or Spring break. It doesnt matter if its with friends or solo just save up, pack up and go. Youll learn something 4 years wont teach you.

Get a random job

(with benets, volunteer) Jobs in college normally suck monkey balls. All the more reason to get a random job, preferably with benets. Try volunteering at a festival for free tickets or working at a ice cream shop for free scoops.

5
8

Experiment
(sex, drugs, food) This is the best time in life to try new things. Go nd a kinky hookup that is 420 friendly, and after the whips and chain and third chick go get some late night spicy curry.

Hit on and possibly sleep with a Prof or a TA

Why study when you can possibly pass by giving up the goodies? Show a little skin or wink a few times at the Professor or TA you know has a weakness for underlings.

Have a hangover
(The best nights are the ones forgotten by you but not your camera and text msgs). While youre in school eventually youll turn 21. The best way to celebrate is to drink til you forget and regret it the next day. Have a friend bring a camera so you can r elive it after the headache passes.

Have a ght
(Waterfight, snowball fight, pillow fight) Fighting is illegal unless you add water, snow(which is still technically water) or pillows to it. Ready your arms and come out fighting, and in the youll come out tired, wet and/or sweaty.

Play Ultimate Truth or Dare

Regular truth or dare sucks. Write down the the most outlandish truths and dares you can think of before throwing them in a hat and select them at random. Of course someone will chicken out, that is what the Shots are there to x.

10

Take a Freshman under your wing!

Mentor them or screw them; either way youll be a better person for it and they would have learned something.

AU RHYTHM DANCE TROUPE

Where Swag and School Spirit Meet
You can nd them at pep rallies, basketball games, and step shows, and every time they perform they bring the swag, bring the spirit, and bring the house down. AU Rhythm is Auburns o cial hip-hop dance group, founded in 2004 by Iris Hill and Jonathan Martin. eir goal was to bring a dance opportunity to Auburn students while allowing them to remain involved in other groups on campus. ey practice twice each week, and bring their unique dance style to Auburn events year-round. Hip-hop isnt the only thing that AU Rhythm members pride themselves on. It is also one of the most diverse groups on campus, with members from all walks of life. Amanda Rives, aptain of AU Rhythm, says that despite their differences, the love of dancing brings them together. ey hope that their passion and joy of dance will spread to those who watch. AU Rhythms goal is to make other people want to dance. When theyre not practicing for the next big performance, AU Rhythm is busy giving back to the community. You can catch them performing at philanthropy events to help Greek organizations raise money for charities. ey also teach dance classes at the local Boys and Girls club to kids who wouldnt otherwise get an opportunity to take dance lessons. ey all agree that spending time with local youth and teaching them hip-hop is just as rewarding as performing in front of the Auburn student body. If youre interested in becoming a member of AU Rhythm, they hold tryouts in April consisting of a dance audition and interview.

AU Rhythm is important because its a group of people from all different walks of life at Auburn coming together for the love of dancing. Our team exemplies the greatness of diversity, and in my opinion, we are one of the few organizations on campus that does this. I think people look forward to watching AU Rhythm perform because it is truly entertaining. We bring swag, spirit, fun, excitement whatever you want to call it Amanda Rives, Captain, 21 wherever we perform.

HOLIDAY EDITION HOT OR NOT

words: sam sumpter photos: press

Follow us @StudyBreaks for more holiday trends! #collegelife

Baby its cold outside, but heyyou still need to know whats hot (and, more importantly, not). So now that the semester is over, its the perfect time to get your shit together and figure out what to do to make this a holiday to remember. In a good way.

HOT
Stocking Stuffing
A cute classic, stockings stuffed with treats and toys that say no one knows you like I do, are the perfect (and incidentally inexpensive) way to show you care.

HOT

Wearing It All On NYE

Theres no such thing as excess on New Years Eve. The holiday shouts for sequins, demands dazzle and straight up begs for bedazzling. So put on your shiniest stuff and ring in 2012 in sparkly style.

Baring It All on NYE

Years ago, when Facebook was fresh, you couldve been totally pissed about that tagged pic of your nip slip. But reallyyou shouldve learned your lesson by now. Theres no such thing as privacy anymore so for Gods sake, close your legs and zip up your fly or, ya know, at least wear underwear.

NOT

Stalking

NOT
3

Yes, we understand the holidays are horrible if youre not in love or whatever, but sorry, that doesnt give you an excuse to manhandle someone into meeting you under the mistletoe. If youre lonely, deal with it the old fashioned waywith booze.

HOT

Celebrating All The Holidays

Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa? Choosing just one is so not fun, so why not opt to celebrate all three? To the untrained eye youll look awesomely open-minded and multicultural even if youre totally doing it for the food and presents.

HOT

NOT

NOT

Hating All The Holidays

Nobody likes a Scrooge, so stop being a buzzkill, shut your emo ass up and just admit it: you really do kind of like Christmas music. Or at least getting a month off from school.

Sipping Spiked Cocoa

It keeps you warm, it gets you tipsy and best of all, Grandma will have no idea. Top it off with a little alcoholic whipped cream and youre good to go.

Chugging Four Loko

It tastes gross and has a nasty habit of making you obnoxious and getting you naked. Be smart and stay away from it around your family this breakyour parents have been through enough.

HOT
Dressing Like A Snow Bunny
We get roughly two months of winter, so take advantage of the cold and break out your favorite scarves, hats and gloves. Boots with the fur, optional.

HOTTER

New Years Resolutions

New year, new start. Get pumped because 2012 is when you finally (FINALLY!) run that marathon, learn French, fall in love and take up the electric guitar. And who cares if you havent quite managed to accomplish those goals before; tenth time is the charm.

New Years Revolutions

With operation Occupy Wall Street going on all over the US, activism is back with a vengeance and passivity is totally pass. Actually giving a shit has never been more hip. STUDYBREAKS.COM DECEMBER 2011|11 |

Rule of thumb: If its 60 or below, dont dress like a ho. If youve got it, by all means, flaunt it but youll look more foolish than fabulous if youre shivering in your stilettos.

Winter has arrived, and we know all you want to do is trudge around in your sweats and Uggsor better yet, just stay at home in your pajamas. But there are those select holiday occasions when you have to peel yourself away from Keeping up with the Kardashians and put on something presentable. Never fear, weve got you covered with go-to outts that will stand the test of time ya know, unlike Kims marriage.

NEW YEARS EVE

Two words: Go Crazy. OD on excess and go for the glimmer with clothes that would be just a little too much on any other given day. Pair a slinky sequined dress and glitter pumps for a fun and easy way to take the party with you wherever you go. After all, everyone loves a human disco ball.

MEET THE BOYFRIENDS PARENTS

Just because youre getting introduced to Mom and Pop doesnt mean you have to throw fashion out the window; a cute dress is still totally appropriate and perfect for impressing his style maven mother. Cover up with a holiday-inspired cardigan and opaque tights, and be sure to bring a gift. Even if its something small, it gives the impression youre nice, thoughtful and wont screw over their son.

CHRISTMAS
Christmas Eve is one of the most magical nights of the yearwhether youre ve, 15 or 50. Go all out and decorate yourself in red, white and green, because today its totally okay to look like a Christmas tree. Have fun with holidayinspired accessories like jingle bells and candy canes, and pull your whole look together with patterned stockings and a red bow. We hear Santa likes that.

NEW YEARS DAY

An amazing last-night-of-2011 will inevitably be followed by a horrendously hungover rst-day-of-2012. You may feel like ass, but you dont have to look like it, so nd a middle ground. Throw on cute but comfy clothes that rep your team for a day of college football and bloody marys. Hair of the dog, ya dig?

Who is really telling the truth when asked? Why should we all keep track of our number? Study Breaks asked women on campus their numbers and their reasons. Here are the results.

What is Your Number?

SEX ON THE COLLEGE CAMPUS
Some are ashamed of their number, while others wear it proudly. Does the number of people youve slept with really matter?
words: jasmine vallejo photos: kaitlyn clement

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER? 12

AGE: 21 MAJOR: Government
When did you rst have sex?

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER? 0 AGE: 19 MAJOR: Nutrition

What do you think about your number?

Im very proud of it because I feel like I can respect myself more when Im steadfast about not having sex.
Is there a reason for that number?

When I was 16 in high school. I lost it to my high school sweetheart, and he took my virginity on our one year anniversary. How romantic.
How was it?

guys ask me now, my number remains on one hand.

Do you think other students are around your number?

Yes, I believe in abstinence.

What do you think men think about your number?

ey probably think its lame, but I dont care.

If a man was at your number, would you have that same idea of them?

abstinence as well.
What number of sexual partners do you think is common for men and women in college?

It was all about me. He was older, and he wasnt a virgin so I let him take control. (for the rst time, that is). He made sure I was okay the whole way through it. I remember thinking, this is what all of my friends are talking about and doing? It wasnt until later we gured out what felt good for the both of us.
What do you think about your number?

Im pretty sure. Its not often that you nd someone with a low number. I think because of society, women, are easily labeled a slut for their number of partners, so they never tell the truth when asked. I think its just a question no one really wants to ask.
What does sex mean to you?

No, I would probably respect them more too, if it is that way by choice.
How do you feel about men asking for your number?

Probably about 5 or 6 maybe.

I dont mind them asking me because Im proud of being a virgin.

It should be really deep and meaningful and should only be done after marriage to keep the sanctity of it intact.
How long do you wait to sleep with a guy?

What does sex mean to you?

Have you ever lied about it?

No, I have not.

Yes, a lot of my friends believe in

Do you think other students are around your number?

Until we are married!

Well, if I instantly say, Ive slept with 12 guys... and Im proud! It might be taken in a bad way. But think about it, I started having sex at the age of sixteen, and Im now twenty-one. Average it out, and Im having sex with two or three partners a year.
Have you ever lied about your number?

Sex used to mean love. Now, its a strong connection I have with someone. Whether that connection stemmed from tequila shots or after ve dates... that is the question.
What would your parents say about your number?

What would your parents say about your number?

ey feel the same way, of course.

Of course. When a girl tells you a number, multiply by three. When

When my mom gave me the sex talk she was very realistic about it. She said, When I was your age, I found the love for sex. Although I would want you to wait for marriage, I know that more than likely will not happen. Just be safe, careful, and remember, youre in control. Probably the best advice about sex. anks Mom.
STUDYBREAKS.COM DECEMBER 2011|21 |

When did you rst have sex?

e rst time I had vaginal intercourse was when I was 16.

How was it?

e rst time a penis was inserted into my vaginal canal was at a party with someone Id known for two months (ish). We were both virgins. In my gentle and sweet adolescence, I had a misconception that everyone was having sex. erefore I was ashamed of my virginity like it was a capitalized V stamped on my forehead. So I did what any reasonable teen would do: I banged a friend at a party.
What do you think about your number?

sex is generally better, for me, if I nd a freaky friend I can play with consistently so both people can take the time to nd out what the other person likes.
Have you lied about it?

Yes. Duh, we all do, dont we? But these days I embrace it.
What does sex mean to you?

I love it and am frankly quite confused why people put so much emphasis on e Number. If you take care of yourself (use condoms, hello?!) and the sex is consensual, then fuck away. Some people like sex in the context of relationships and some people just wanna bone. Sex does not carry the same meaning for everyone.
What do you think men think about your number?

Sex is a moment when two or more people have the capability of making each other feel so freaking good that they can forget about their midterm next week or the rent that is due tomorrow. It is a chance to play and laugh and try new things. It is a chance to communicate and nd a way to please someone in a way that is unlike anything else.
What would your parents say about your number?

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER? 0 AGE: 19 MAJOR: International

Relations
What do you think about your number?

I appreciate my number, and Im not afraid to say that Im still a virgin.

Is there a reason for that number?

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER? 26 AGE: 21 MAJOR: Psychology

Men and women think of it what they will. When I was a freshman and sophomore, I liked to party. But now as a senior, I have realized that

Well I dont expect them to make me a golden star chart and award me with a golden star for each of my sexcapades. ey know that it is my body and respect that I am a grown woman making my own choices. I have never shouted out my number to them and they have not asked because why do they need to know? ey just want to make sure that I bang safely.

Its my own personal belief, but also a religious belief. I believe in abstinence, and Id rather wait for the right guy instead of giving it away to a few guys.
How would you feel about a man with the same number as you?

I would de nitely view him with more respect, because it is tempting when you love someone, but if a guy has a number of zero it shows me that some men really do just want a fun relationship instead of one based around sex, which I nd really attractive.
Have you ever lied about your number? Im never embarrassed about my number and never lied. Do you care about a girls number? I never really cared about a womans number, but you dont want it to be like crazy, crazy high. What is a slut to you? If she is always faithful to me or whoever she is with at the time then shes good.

MEN TALK
Christopher, 21

DOES HER NUMBER REALLY MATTER?

Adrian, 21 Is there a number you wouldnt want someone youre seeing to go over? I wouldnt want someone Im seeing to have a number more than 20, because that just means she slept around quite a bit. I know I said her number doesnt really matter to me but thats if it isnt more than 20.

What do you think about a womans number? Honestly Ill only have a reaction the rst time a girl would tell me what her number is. If its high Im going to be like damn girl and if its low Im going to be like that is cool. To me its just a number and it wouldnt keep me from dating that person.

Have you ever lied about your number? I have never lied about my number. What is a slut to you? A slut to me isnt much of a number of how many guys she slept with but more of how she put herself out there... clubs, friend functions, dates etc.

Ty, 21

22DECEMBER 2011| STUDYBREAKS.COM |

How do you feel about men asking you your number?

Sometimes it makes me feel uncomfortable, because I do feel like they judge me based on my answer, but for the most part it really doesnt bother me, and Im not afraid to answer truthfully.
Have you ever lied about it?

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER? 4 AGE: 20 MAJOR: Fine Arts

fore I decided I wasnt going to have sex again until marriage.
What do you think men think about that number?

Have you ever lied about it? I have lied about it, maybe only exposing one sexual partner, like my high school sweetheart, making it sound more acceptable. What does sex mean to you?

Never have, never will.

As college students, do you think others are around your number?

I think some are, but Id probably make a guess that most arent.
What number of sexual partners do you think is common for men and women in college?

When did you rst have sex? What do you think about your number?

Im not sure what a man would think! It depends on who you ask. Ask a fraternity guy and hed probably think that was low. Ask a straight-laced, traditional guy and he might think Im a whore.
If a man was at your number, would you have that same idea of them?

Sex has always been about love for me. However, It wasnt until the past year that I actually gured out was love was. ats when I knew what sex wasnt it.
How long do you wait to sleep with a guy?

I rst had sex very young at 15. I used to be ashamed of my number, but now I know it does not de ne me.
Is there a reason for that number?

If a guy my age had slept with four people, I feel like people would not blink an eye.
How do you feel about men asking you your number?

e rst three guys Ive slept with had all been guys I had dated for over a year. My last partner was older, so I felt pressured to have sex sooner in the relationship, about three months in.
What would your parents say about your number?

Im not too sure...3-5?

What does sex mean to you?

Sex means waiting for the right person, and not just someone youve known for a month and think they are e One. To me, it really means taking that extra step with someone you could seriously see yourself spending the rest of your life with.
How long do you wait to sleep with a guy?

Four is how many serious relationships Ive had in my life be-

Recently, Ive realized the guys who would ask that question are not guys I want to associate with anyway.

My parents know my number. eyre response was so simple and loving, I couldnt have been more relieved.

WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER? 0 AGE: 21 MAJOR: Nutritional Sciences

What do you think about your number?

Apparently, a long time if Ive had a few boyfriends, and Im still a virgin.

Im actually very proud of my number. It represents me and my beliefs about waiting til marriage.
Is there a reason for that number?

ber as me. I nd that those guys are hard to nd.

How do you feel about men asking you your number?

What would your parents say about your number?

My parents know, and theyre very proud that Ive decided to wait for the right guy.

Jessie, 21 Have you ever lied about your number? I would lie if it was high... yes I have lied about my number. What constitutes as a slut to you? Hmm a slut, I dont think a number would dene a slut. Probably behavior.

First and foremost, I am a Christian and believe that God has intended sex to be saved for marriage. I strongly believe that there is a guy out there that God has for me, and I am willing to wait for him! I wear a purity ring that says, True Love Waits as a reminder of my commitment to my future hubby.
What do you think men think about your number?

Im de nitely not ashamed of my number. I tell guys upfront about it, and if they arent willing to respect that then theyre a waste of my time.
Have you ever lied about it?

Nope!

What does sex mean to you?

I think that guys de nitely respect women who are willing to wait. I know some guys dont and think its weird that Ive never had sex, but Ive always known I was a little weird.
If a man was at your number, would you have t hat same idea of them?

Sex is very important to me. I think there is so much more to it that a physical tie, it is an emotional as well as a spiritual tie, and Ive seen so much heartbreak in my friends that have had sex with a guy that has dumped them. Im waiting for the one and it will mean all the more when that wedding day nally happens.
How long do you wait to sleep with a guy?

If he likes it then he should put a ring on it.

What would your parents say about your number?

Yes, these days I would highly respect a guy with the same num-

Praise the Lord! Hahaha.

DREAM ROOM

WITH

MACKENZIE FRAZIER
HER STYLE IS GENETIC
When Mackenzie wanted to take a stylish approach to decorating her small dorm room, she knew just who to ask for help: her mom. As Mackenzie puts it, Having a mom who is an interior designer really didnt influence my style, it MADE my style! Together, they pulled together an assortment of DIY accessories and colorful picture frames to customize Mackenzies bedroom. With an emphasis on crisp blues and greens, this room has successfully shed the dorm look and is the perfect cozy retreat that Mackenzie hoped for. What was your inspiration when designing your room? My inspiration when decorating my room really wasnt anything in particular, just me and my mom (being an interior designer) mixing and matching our ideas of what we thought would be cute! (Mostly my mom though.) How did you choose which colors to use? I chose my color scheme based off of my headboard. I bought the headboard from someone last year and decided I liked the simplicity of the white and green so I just stayed with that and picked my bedding off of those colors. What is one thing you couldnt live without in your room? One thing I couldnt live without would be my desk organizer. I am crazy organized, and that desk shelf definitely helps keep all of my stuff organized, while still making it look neat! Which item in your room best describes your personality? The accessory that best describes my personality would have to be the mirror. Its contemporary, fun and gives the room depth while adding personality! What is one thing you would change about your room? One thing I would change in my room next year would definitely be not having a white comforter. It gets stains on it so easily and with me being a neat freak, it definitely doesnt sit too well with me! How did you lose the dorm room look? To lose the dorm room look, I just made it my own. My room in WIllow Hall is a lot like my room at home... which is exactly what I wanted! I like the crisp and sophisticated look because it makes it feel cosy and warm! What is your favorite piece in the room? Oh, I have two: my headboard and curtains. I got the headboard from my big sister in Phi Mu! Her mom welds, so she handmade that and used it last year! I absolutely fell in love with it when I saw it so I bought it from her and am using it this year! The curtains are special to me because my grandmother made both the closet curtain and the window curtain. Pay Attention to the Details
