Incredible Cappadocia

то
но
он
There are strange towers of rock. There are mysterious caves. There
are cities under the ground. At one time, George Lucas wanted to

ци
film some parts of Star Wars here. But these amazing places aren’t

ан
on an alien planet. They are in Cappadocia in central Turkey.

ст
Nature and ‘Man’ created this incredible landscape. Nature formed
the ‘fairy chimneys’ which cover the region. These are tall towers
ди
of soft rock with a ‘hat’ of hard rock on the top. Some of them are
на
40m tall. But people built the tunnels and underground cities.
People first came here 10,000 years ago. Different empires ruled here, including the Hittites
щ

(from 3,500 BC) and the Persians. Alexander the Great came here in 333 BC and the Romans in
мо

63 BC. There were lots of invasions and Cappadocia could be a dangerous place. People wanted
по

to feel safe, so they started building their homes underground.

There are 36 underground cities in Cappadocia. The largest is at
в

Derinkuyu. It was built under a hill. It covers an area of four square

т“

kilometres. The underground city was built on seven floors and was
ле

85 metres below the surface. There were homes, kitchens, churches,

„К

stables for horses and meeting halls. There was even a prison!
Derinkuyu Underground City was opened to the public in 1965. The
на

second largest city is at Kaymakly, nine kilometres away. A two-metre

wide underground tunnel connects the two cities!
ие

People first started building these underground cities nearly 3,000

ан

years ago. They also built their homes in the fairy chimneys, sometimes up to five floors. In fact,
д

some of these homes are still lived in today and tourists can stay in them.
из

Cappadocia is now a World Heritage Site and an important centre of tourism. You can explore
но

some of the caves and underground cities. You can even travel over this fantastic landscape in a
hot-air balloon!

3 People lived underground because they wanted to be safe.
4 Derinkuyu was built near a hill.
