‘TMS’ Tension Metering Sensor

the latest BTSR Digital Tension Sensor Release

TMS (Tension Metering Sensor) is the latest technology developed

by BTSR R&D division, and is a step forward in BTSR Hygiene division
business offering.

BTSR has recently introduced the new digital tension sensor TMS –
Tension and Metering Sensor - able to measure tension and speed of
the spandex.

Figure 1 TMS is installed inside the DIAPER machine, next to the glue
(http://www.btsr-hygiene.com/upload/brochure
/eng/Hygiene%20Product%20Line%20Brochure.pdf) applicator or the ultrasonic welding, and replaces the digital TS55
Tension Sensor.

- TENSION:
 Precise tension measurement
 Detects and tracks all tension variations
- SPEED:
 Monitors the speed of the spandex at the end of process
 Helps maintain process repeatability by monitoring speed changes
- METERING:
 Precise meter counter
- STOP MOTION:
 Detects yarn breaking – precise stop function with auto machine stop

BTSR ‘SECOND and THIRD CLOSED-LOOPs’ FUNCTION CONTROL

TMS works in conjunction with BTSR first CLOSED-LOOP Function Control, automatically controls and
maintains output Spandex Fiber Constant Tension and Speed Values next to the glue applicator or to the
ultrasonic welding.

TMS are the “check points” where the tension and the speed of the spandex are individually detected. The
SECOND and THIRD CLOSED-LOOPs are made by three BTSR devices:

DIAPERFEEDER + TFS TMS SMDIN/MULTILOOP

The data is elaborated by the SMDIN/MULTILOOP controller which individually calculates the set point of
DIAPERFEEDERs in order to compensate the different frictions arising during the path between the bobbins
and the insertion points.

- DIAPER FEEDER fiber feeding device:

- Controls and adjusts the output fiber feeding tension value according to
the T1 set-point value, thus automatically compensating constant tension
from full to empty package (FIRST LOOP)

- TENSION SENSOR device:

- Measures the T2 feeding tension value and downstream fiber

consumption C and sends information to SMDIN MULTILOOP unit

- SMDIN MULTILOOP management unit:

- Manages and controls all units

- Receives TMS tension and metering sensor information

- Adjusts DIAPERFEEDER set-point tension value, by automatically

compensating the friction arising upstream the TMS sensor during the fiber
path (SECOND LOOP) and the TMS sensor downstream extra-friction
(THIRD LOOP)

- INDIRECT ACTION: spandex speed variation monitoring

DIRECT ACTION: spandex speed variation compensation

TMS CONFIGURATIONS:

One of the advantages of TMS is the possibility to have 4 different configuration options. This helps to avoid
additional pulleys, which in some cases are needed to lead the spandex to the right position.

The four possible TMS configurations are:

 TMS/D----/BB (Bottom IN – Bottom OUT)

 TMS/D----/BT (Bottom IN – Top OUT)
 TMS/D----/TB (Top IN – Bottom OUT)
 TMS/D----/TT (Top IN – Top OUT)

Main differences between TMS and TS55

 TMS Tension Meter Sensor can monitor and control the tension and the speed of the spandex next
to the insertion point. The speed is controlled by the integrated outlet wheel.
TS55 tension sensor can only monitor the tension of the spandex near its insertion point

 TMS is designed to reduce the frictions created by the static contact points

 TMS has only one static contact point – the ceramic of the load cell (indicated by the vertical Green-
Red arrow) - the load cell ceramic of the TMS is made of low friction ceramic material in order to
reduce the stress on the spandex preventing any abrasion

TS55 has three static contact points (indicated by the vertical Green-Red and Yellow-Red arrows)

Figure 5

 The correct input and output angles are controlled by the integrated configurable wheels. Each
configuration keeps the spandex with the correct triangulation angles on the load cell

 The inlet and outlet ceramic wheels are made of low friction ceramic material able to reduce the
spandex abrasion. Furthermore, higher performance bearings are mounted on the inlet and outlet
wheels of the TMS

 The compactness of the TMS: The step between two TMS is only half an inch (12,75 mm)
compared to the step between the MCC/DLT/001 (made by TS55/D1000/IP and RWO.SP.006/2)
which is 21mm

 The identification of the TMS can be done by following two different procedures:
1. Obscuring the blinking LED, as in the identification of the TS55 tension sensor
2. Turning the outlet ceramic wheel

Moreover, the LED for the identification of TMS is placed on the upper side of the tension sensor
rather than the left-side position on the TS55 as shown in the images below (Figure 7 and 8).
