QUESTION 1

(a) Outline any SEVEN factors which must be considered during the selection of a suitable site
for a reservoir.

(b) The table below gives the mean monthly runoff of a river as observed over a thirty year
period. Draw the mass curve and demand curve and find the capacity of the reservoir for 100%
utilization of water at constant regulated flow for power generation.

QUESTION 2

(a) In order to increase the life of a reservoir, it is necessary to control the deposition of
sediments. Outline FIVE pre-construction and THREE post-construction measures
necessary for controlling the deposition of sediments in a reservoir.

(b) A reservoir has the following areas enclosed by contours at various elevations. Determine the
capacity of the reservoir between elevations of 200.00 to 300.00. Use (a) trapezoidal formula,
and (b) the prismoidal formula. Are the computed volumes from the given methods equal?

With the help of a very neat sketch define the following reservoir characteristics

(a) Surcharge storage


(b) Useful storage
(c) Dead storage.
(d) Bank storage
(e) Valley storage

QUESTION 4

Find the probable life of the reservoir with an initial reservoir capacity of 30x106 m3. If the
average annual flood inflow is 60x106 m3 and the average annual sediment inflow is 2x105
tonnes. ρsediment = 1200 kg/m3. The usual life of the reservoir will terminate when 80 % of the
initial capacity is filled with sediment. The relationship between the trap efficiency () and the
capacity inflow ratio are presented in the table below:
