Language Spot: Describing job routines

Simple present tense

The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular, true or
normal.

5
"What is your typical day like?"

Example 1: Communications specialist

"On my day of work, I start the day off by checking my emails. This way, I reply to clients and
geteverything organized at the start of the day. I then look over my to-do list and get started
on theprojects that have my top priority. I spend most of my morning writing social media
posts and designing visuals to go with them. I find that I am most creative in the morning.

After lunch, I start to work on the more analytical aspects of my job. I look at all the data
we pullfrom our social media and email campaigns. I use Excel to record all of this data. At
the end of each week, I compile it into a report and present it to my team. While I enjoy my
current role, I amlooking for an opportunity to learn new skills and work with bigger clients."
6
Example 2: Barista

"At the beginning of every shift, I restock all of our cups and make sure the dining room is in
order.I want to start the day off being organized and prepared for our mid-afternoon rush. I
update the specials sign based on the inventory, making an effort to get rid of products that
are close to expiration. Once the mid-afternoon rush comes in, I am solely focused on getting
orders made. I try to stay focused and productive while still trying to engage in friendly
conversation with our guests. I want them to feel welcomed even during our busier times. I
finish off my shift by wiping down all the tables and restocking our supplies. I clean all the
dishes and make sure everything is set up nicely for whoever is working next.
