IBM Spectrum Protect review by a real user

excellent support, but it has a higher licensing cost than its
competitors

Network Administrator at a energy/utilities

company with 501-1,000 employees

Van Duivenvoorde

WHAT IS OUR PRIMARY USE CASE?

My company was using IBM Spectrum Protect to back up the environment. It helped my company implement a backup policy.
My company needed different versioning and types of backup, but in the last two years, the license cost for the solution got
out of hand.

WHAT IS MOST VALUABLE?

What I found most valuable in IBM Spectrum Protect is that it allows you to back up physical machines, and its proxy feature
lets you back up virtual machines.

WHAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT?

Software-wise, IBM Spectrum Protect didn't handle virtual machines that well, but I heard that the issue had been resolved on
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, though I didn't get a chance to test that feature.

The license cost is mainly the area for improvement in IBM Spectrum Protect.

Another con in the solution is the Microsoft Office 365 backup, which needed to be handled better by IBM Spectrum Protect,
and could have some improvements.

FOR HOW LONG HAVE I USED THE SOLUTION?

My company switched from IBM Spectrum Protect to Veeam, but I had hands-on experience with IBM Spectrum Protect within
the last twelve months.

My company has been using IBM Spectrum Protect for the last ten years.

WHAT DO I THINK ABOUT THE STABILITY OF THE SOLUTION?

IBM Spectrum Protect is a very stable solution, so I'm rating it eight out of ten in terms of stability.

WHAT DO I THINK ABOUT THE SCALABILITY OF THE SOLUTION?

Scalability-wise, IBM Spectrum Protect is a seven out of ten for me.

HOW ARE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SUPPORT?

I'm rating the technical support for IBM Spectrum Protect a nine out of ten.

HOW WOULD YOU RATE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SUPPORT?

Positive

WHICH SOLUTION DID I USE PREVIOUSLY AND WHY DID I SWITCH?

We stepped away from IBM Spectrum Protect and have started using Veeam, primarily because of the higher license cost
of IBM Spectrum Protect.

Before using IBM Spectrum Protect, we used Omniback from HP, and we switched to IBM Spectrum Protect because
Omniback didn't keep up with the trend, was still working with OTA backup, and didn't support our backup needs, for
example, versioning.

IBM Spectrum Protect and Dell NetWorker

Continued from previous page

HOW WAS THE INITIAL SETUP?

Regarding the initial setup for IBM Spectrum Protect, it's a four out of ten for me. It's complex.

Complete deployment of IBM Spectrum Protect took two weeks.

Initially, the team had some problems with the setup because there was an error in the assessment, and my company ran out
of capacity within two months of implementing IBM Spectrum Protect. It was garbage in, garbage out. The evaluation by the
administrators was not done correctly, so that IBM couldn't supply an adequate solution.

WHAT ABOUT THE IMPLEMENTATION TEAM?

We hired a consultant from IBM to deploy IBM Spectrum Protect ten years ago. The consultant assessed the environment and
implemented the solution.

WHAT WAS OUR ROI?

I don't have the metrics on ROI from IBM Spectrum Protect, but mostly, my company switched over to the product because
Omniback was no longer adequate.

Using IBM Spectrum Protect meant using fewer tapes versus Omniback because IBM Spectrum Protect could handle bigger
tape sizes, while Omniback held three or five-millimeter tape sizes. IBM Spectrum Protect required less storage, so it
was mostly good enough to support my company's new backup policy through versioning, encryption, and security.

ROI-wise, I'm scoring IBM Spectrum Protect as seven out of ten.

WHAT'S MY EXPERIENCE WITH PRICING, SETUP COST, AND LICENSING?

IBM Spectrum Protect, cost-wise, has way higher pricing than Veeam. By switching over to Veeam, my company saved over
$600,000 in USD.

My company was on a PPU license for IBM Spectrum Protect, which was okay initially. After two or three years, IBM called to
switch the license to terabyte licensing, and it seemed OK to change at the time, but in the last three or four years, it became
expensive.

The IBM Spectrum Protect pricing is a two on a scale of one to ten.

My company paid additional fees for maintenance, apart from the standard licensing fees.

15
IBM Spectrum Protect and Dell NetWorker

Continued from previous page

WHICH OTHER SOLUTIONS DID I EVALUATE?

I evaluated a solution from Quantum, though I can't recall its name.

WHAT OTHER ADVICE DO I HAVE?

I have experience with IBM Spectrum Protect, formerly Tivoli Storage Manager.

My company was an IBM customer but has stepped away and moved to Veeam.

The company had three different sites where the solution had on-premise deployments.

Regarding the implementation, there was an IBM consultant on site and two backup administrations learning the IBM
Spectrum Protect installation process along the way. My company also had a team of five or six system and network
administrators who helped with client-related concerns because my company had more than one hundred fifty clients for
separate sites. The two backup administrators handled the maintenance for IBM Spectrum Protect.

One thousand two hundred people use the solution.

I would suggest to others looking into implementing IBM Spectrum Protect to research terabyte licensing and be clear on how
much data your company has, including your expected data growth, so you can assess where you'll stand regarding license
costs. If you're moving to big data or you'll be storing big data, PPU licensing could be a more suitable option.

My rating for IBM Spectrum Protect is seven out of ten because it's one of the two best backup software currently available. It
also has excellent support if you have a maintenance contract, but I live in a small country, so this could be why IBM provided
better support.

I'm an IBM Spectrum Protect customer.

IBM Spectrum Protect and Dell NetWorker

Dell NetWorker review by a real user

Easy to implement with good backup capabilities and tight

integration with Data Domain

Technical Lead at Infineon Technologies

NAYAB RASOOL
SHAIK

WHAT IS OUR PRIMARY USE CASE?

We have used the solution largely for backups, including all our databases and UX machines.

WHAT IS MOST VALUABLE?

The solution offers very good backups and has all of the basic features any other solution would have on offer.

There's tight integration between Data Domain and NetWorker as well. Data Domain is an EMC product. They have very good
integration between the two.

The initial setup is simple.

Its stability is very good.

The solution can scale.

WHAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT?

The web console could be a lot better. All the customers are dependent on a separate console server. If they want to access
NetWorker, they need to have a separate console server to access the management window. I know they've come up with a
browser-based management site in order to monitor day-to-day backups and to perform the administration or the setup within
the web console. Yet, for the web-based console, they still need to do some improvements.

The documentation could be better. I find the solution is not properly documented. If you want to set up a SharePoint, there
are certain steps to be followed, which I have to discover myself, I have to find out myself, which was not found in those
installation setup guides. That's something I would suggest. We have already passed this suggestion to Dell EMC, letting them
know that there are a few steps missing. The documentation was not properly maintained or properly updated. Previously, the
older documentation was good. However, it seems that now, when they update and move forward it's not properly
documented.

IBM Spectrum Protect and Dell NetWorker

Continued from previous page

FOR HOW LONG HAVE I USED THE SOLUTION?

I've been using the solution for ten years.

WHAT DO I THINK ABOUT THE STABILITY OF THE SOLUTION?

It's stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable and the performance is good.

WHAT DO I THINK ABOUT THE SCALABILITY OF THE SOLUTION?

The solution can scale. We only need to get an additional license if we want to do a scaling of our infrastructure. We just need
to buy the capacity we need. We can just upgrade the RAM in case it needs additional resources also. We can even deploy
another NetWorker server.

Scaling is purely based on capacity. You don't have to buy it per server either as most of the servers are virtualized. As you
have the socket license and the capacity license, then you can actually deploy a new server.

We have more than 1,000 users on the solution right now.

WHICH SOLUTION DID I USE PREVIOUSLY AND WHY DID I SWITCH?

We've used EMC, Veeam, and Rubrik.

We do have Rubrik and I set up Rubrik a few months back, and it's working fine.

EMC, in terms of cost, is more expansive. I would definitely go for NetWorker instead as, when you compare it with the Veritas
NetBackup, NetWorker is cheaper. Rubrik is cheaper than NetWorker, however, with Rubrik, we're only using it to back up our
VMs. For the other kinds of workloads, such as Exchange or SharePoint, we are still using NetWorker.

18
IBM Spectrum Protect and Dell NetWorker

Continued from previous page

HOW WAS THE INITIAL SETUP?

The initial setup is not complex. It's straightforward. Once you have all your prerequisites ready, then you are good to go.

WHAT ABOUT THE IMPLEMENTATION TEAM?

As integrators, we are able to handle the initial setup. We handled the setup ourselves mostly in-house.

WHAT WAS OUR ROI?

I don't have any information on the ROI.

WHAT'S MY EXPERIENCE WITH PRICING, SETUP COST, AND LICENSING?

We'll have the solution for about five years. I can't say how much it will cost in total.

WHAT OTHER ADVICE DO I HAVE?

We are users and integrators as well.

My advice would be to have, once you have started to use it, something more on the Windows-based tools. If you see the
commands, all those commands are as if you're running a query. The underlying structure of NetWorker is a skill database, so
it's actually running on a skill database. Mostly you'll be running some queries, or querying commands to get the reports using
the command prompt. For someone who is familiar with Windows, they'll find it very easy to use.

I'd rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Bar length
The total ranking of a product in a category, represented by the bar length, is based on a weighted aggregate score. The score is calculated
using the following factors:
ul>
li>Comparisons Views: the product with the highest number of comparisons with other products-in-the-category gets a
maximum of 25 points. Every other product gets assigned points based on its total in proportion to the #1 product
in that ranking factor. For example, if a product has 80% of the number of comparison views compared to the
product with the most reviews then the product's points for reviews would be 25 * 80%./li>
li>Views: We calculate the number of Views based on the percentage of category comparisons out of the total comparisons of the
product./li>
ul>
li>For example, if a product has 100 Comparisons with other products in the category and a total of 1,000 Comparisons,
the product will be assigned 10% of the total number of Views. If the product has a total of 2,000 Views,
it will be assigned 200 Views for this ranking factor./li>
