NATIONAL CONTEST NC 3

ROUND 1a

1. Name the second metal in Group (IV) or 14.

Ans: Lead. (Si and Ge are metalloids)

2. Name the last non-metal in Group (V) or 15.

Ans: Phosphorus. (As and Sb are metalloids)

3. How many metals are in Group 3 or 13 of the Periodic Table?

Ans: Four. (Al, Ga, In and Tl)

ROUND 1b

Preamble to all schools:

Consider the following bond energies all in kJmol-1.
C – H 411; C – O 358; C – C 346; C = C 602; O – H 459.
1. Calculate the energy required to break all the necessary bonds in the dehydration of 2-butanol to give
2-butene.
Ans: CH3CHOHCH2CH3 → CH3CH=CHCH3 + H2O
Bonds broken = 1C–H+C–O+1C–C
Energy required = 411 + 358 + 346 = 1115 or 1.12*103 kJ
2. Calculate the energy required to make all the bonds in the dehydration of 2-butanol to give 2-butene.
Ans: Bonds made = 1 C = C + 1 H – OH
= -602 + – 459 = -1061 or -1.06*103 kJ
3. Calculate the enthalpy change for the dehydration of 2-butanol to give 2-butene, given that energy
required to break the necessary bonds is +1115kJ and to make new bonds is -1061kJ.
Ans: Energy required to break all bonds = +1115 kJ
Energy given out when new bonds are formed = -1061 kJ
∴ Enthalpy change = -1061 + 1115 = +54.0 kJ
ROUND 2

1. What is the full name of the potential difference between the electrodes of a Voltaic Cell?

Ans: Electromotive Force (emf).

2. What instrument is normally used in the laboratory to measure emf of cells.?

Ans: A Potentiometer.

3. Will the pH at the equivalence point of a titration of dilute ammonia with dilute HCl be above 7 or

below 7?

Ans: Below 7.

ROUND 4a

TRUE OR FALSE

1. The equilibrium constant of a chemical equilibrium in the gaseous phase cannot be altered by

pressure or volume changes.

Ans: T.

2. For a chemical equilibrium whose forward reaction is exothermic, addition of a catalyst will lower

the enthalpy of reaction.

Ans: F.

3. The equilibrium constant of a heterogeneous chemical equilibrium can be altered by addition of a

solid catalyst.

Ans: F.
ROUND 4b

TRUE OR FALSE

1. Ammonia gas dissolves in water to give a solution of low pH.

Ans: F.

2. SO2 gas dissolves in water to give dilute H2SO4.

Ans: F.

3. Addition of dilute H2SO4 to solid NaCl does not produce HCl gas

Ans: T
