Lesson 2: Marketplace Feminism in Ads Today

- Covergirl commercial:
- They don't address the makeup
- The hashtag says #girlscan even though it is all women but, you can't be
what you cant see
- They also donate 5 mill every year for girls to go into stem however, they do
not promote this, even though it is a strict feminist intent
- Nike commercial:
- Addresses women's anger and insecurities about living up to body ideals and
abilities
- However, there is only fit, abled bodied, white women in the ad
- It is an empowering relatable ad though
- However, it is blaming you in a sense telling you that you are responsible for
your body so it is your fault if you don’t do it

- Queer commercials = commonly fetishized and over/hyper sexualized - especially for


women, however for men, it is almost never sexualized and most commonly no
contact. They are almost seen as “non sexual beings”
